Inducing Ferrimagnetic Exchange in 1D-FeSe 2 Chains Using Heteroleptic Amine Complexes: [Fe(en)(tren)][FeSe 2 ] 2

[Fe(en)(tren)][FeSe 2 ] 2 (en = ethylenediamine, C 2 H 8 N 2 , tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, C 6 H 18 N 4 ) has been synthesized by a mixed-ligand solvothermal method. Its crystal structure contains heteroleptic [Fe(en)(tren)] 2+ complexes with distorted octahedral coordination, incorporated between 1D-FeSe 2 chains composed of edge–sharing FeSe 4 tetrahedra. The twisted octahedral coordination environment of the Fe–amine complex leads to partial dimerization of Fe–Fe distances in the FeSe 2 chains so that the FeSe 4 polyhedra deviate strongly from the regular tetrahedral geometry. 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals oxidation states of +3 for the Fe chain atoms and +2 for the Fe complex atoms. The close proximity of Fe atoms in the chains promotes ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions, as indicated by a positive Weiss constant, θ = +53.8(6) K, derived from the Curie–Weiss fitting. Magnetometry and heat capacity reveal two consecutive magnetic transitions below 10 K. DFT calculations suggest that the ordering observed at 4 K is due to antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions in the 1D-FeSe 2 chains. The combination of two different ligands creates an asymmetric coordination environment that induces changes in the structure of the Fe–Se fragments. Finally, this synthetic strategy opens new ways to explore the effects of ligand field strength on the structure of both Fe-amine complexes and surrounding Fe–Se chains.

Anisotropic positive linear and sub-linear magnetoresistivity in the cubic type-II Dirac metal Pd 3 In 7

We report a transport study on Pd 3 In 7 which displays multiple Dirac type-II nodes in its electronic dispersion. Pd 3 In 7 is characterized by low residual resistivities and high mobilities, which are consistent with Dirac-like quasiparticles. For an applied magnetic field (μ 0 H) having a non-zero component along the electrical current, we find a large, positive, and linear in μ 0 H longitudinal magnetoresistivity (LMR). The sign of the LMR and its linear dependence deviate from the behavior reported for the chiral-anomaly-driven LMR in Weyl semimetals. Interestingly, such anomalous LMR is consistent with predictions for the role of the anomaly in type-II Weyl semimetals. In contrast, the transverse or conventional magnetoresistivity (CMR for electric fields E⊥μ 0 H) is large and positive, increasing by 10 3 –10 4 % as a function of μ 0 H while following an anomalous, angle-dependent power law ρ xx α (μ 0 H) n with n(θ) ≤ 1. The order of magnitude of the CMR, and its anomalous power-law, is explained in terms of uncompensated electron and hole-like Fermi surfaces characterized by anisotropic carrier scattering likely due to the lack of Lorentz invariance.

As–Se Pentagonal Linkers to Induce Chirality and Polarity in Mixed-Valent Fe–Se Tetrahedral Chains Resulting in Hidden Magnetic Ordering

A novel mixed-valent hybrid chiral and polar compound, Fe 7 As 3 Se 12 (en) 6 (H 2 O), has been synthesized by a single-step solvothermal method. The crystal structure consists of 1D [Fe 5 Se 9 ] chains connected via [As 3 Se 2 ]–Se pentagonal linkers and charge-balancing interstitial [Fe(en) 3 ] 2+ complexes (en = ethylenediamine). Neutron powder diffraction verified that interstitial water molecules participate in the crystal packing. Magnetic polarizability of the produced compound was confirmed by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed the presence of mixed-valent Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ in the Fe–Se chains. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal strong antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor interactions within the chains with no apparent magnetic ordering down to 2 K. Hidden short-range magnetic ordering below 70 K was found by 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, showing that a fraction of the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ in the chains are magnetically ordered. Nevertheless, complete magnetic ordering is not achieved even at 6 K. Analysis of XAS spectra demonstrates that the fraction of Fe 3+ in the chain increases with decreasing temperature. Computational analysis points out several competing ferrimagnetic ordered models within a single chain. Here, this competition, together with variation in the Fe oxidation state and additional weak intrachain interactions, is hypothesized to prevent long-range magnetic ordering.

Solvothermal Synthesis of [Cr 7 S 8 (en) 8 Cl 2 ]Cl 3 ⋅ 2H 2 O with Magnetically Frustrated [Cr 7 S 8 ] 5+ Double‐Cubes**

Abstract A novel transition metal chalcohalide [Cr 7 S 8 (en) 8 Cl 2 ]Cl 3 ⋅ 2H 2 O, with [Cr 7 S 8 ] 5+ dicubane cationic clusters, has been synthesized by a low temperature solvothermal method, using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethylenediamine ( en ) solvents. Ethylenediamine ligand exhibits bi‐ and monodentate coordination modes; in the latter case ethylenediamine coordinates to Cr atoms of adjacent clusters, giving rise to a 2D polymeric structure. Although magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K, a highly negative Weiss constant, θ =−224(2) K, obtained from Curie‐Weiss fit of inverse susceptibility, suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between S =3/2 Cr(III) centers. Due to the complexity of the system with (2 S +1) 7 =16384 microstates from seven Cr 3+ centers, a simplified model with only two exchange constants was used for simulations. Density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations yielded the two exchange constants to be J 1 =−21.4 cm −1 and J 2 =−30.2 cm −1 , confirming competing AFM coupling between the shared Cr 3+ center and the peripheral Cr 3+ ions of the dicubane cluster. The best simulation of the experimental data was obtained with J 1 =−20.0 cm −1 and J 2 =−21.0 cm −1 , in agreement with the slightly stronger AFM exchange within the triangles of the peripheral Cr 3+ ions as compared to the AFM exchange between the central and peripheral Cr 3+ ions. This compound is proposed as a synthon towards magnetically frustrated systems assembled by linking dicubane transition metal‐chalcogenide clusters into polymeric networks.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study of Magnetic Exchange Pathways in MnS

We report an investigation of the magnetic structure and magnetic exchange pathways in MnS via neutron scattering methods, aided by density functional theory (DFT) modeling. The material has been confirmed to undergo antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at 152 K, with the magnetic structure representing AFM stacking of ferromagnetic (FM) (111) planes of Mn magnetic moments. Correspondingly, the magnetic structure is described by a propagation vector k = (1/2, 1/2, 1/2), with the volume of the magnetic unit cell being 8 times larger than the volume of the nuclear unit cell. Analysis of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data collected on a powder sample of MnS revealed that the next-nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange constant (J 2 ) exceeds the nearest-neighbor exchange constant (J 1 ) by more than 3 times, while in the case of MnO, which exhibits the same nuclear and magnetic structures as MnS, the J 2 /J 1 ratio was reported to be below 1.5. Although for MnO the signs of both J 1 and J 2 indicated AFM exchange interactions, machine-learning INS data analysis in combination with DFT calculations suggests that the INS data collected on MnS are best described with J 1 < 0 and J 2 > 0, corresponding to FM and AFM exchange couplings, respectively. To achieve a satisfactory fit to the experimentally observed data, the Hamiltonian used to model the INS spectra also included the next-next-nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange constant (J 3 ). The best-fit model has been obtained with the values of the exchange constants J 1 = -0.27 meV, J 2 = 1.05 meV, and J 3 = -0.19 meV.

Complex Dirac-like Electronic Structure in Atomic Site-Ordered Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6

We report the synthesis via an indium flux method of a novel single-crystalline compound Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 that belongs to the cubic Ir 3 Ge 7 structure type. In Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 , the In and Ge atoms preferentially occupy, respectively, the 12d and 16f sites of the Im3¯m space group, thus creating a colored variant of the Ir 3 Ge 7 structure. Like the other compounds of the Ir 3 Ge 7 family, Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 shows potential as a thermoelectric, displaying a relatively large power factor, PF ~ 2 mW/cm K 2 , at a temperature T ~ 225 K, albeit showing a modest figure of merit, ZT = 8 x 10 -4 , because of the lack of a finite band gap. These figures might improve through a use of chemical substitution strategies to achieve band gap opening. Remarkably, electronic band structure calculations reveal that this compound displays a complex Dirac-like electronic structure relatively close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure is composed of several Dirac type-I and type-II nodes, and even Dirac type-III nodes that result from the touching between a flat band and a linearly dispersing band. Here, this rich Dirac-like electronic dispersion suggests the possibility to observe experimentally Dirac type-III nodes and study their role in the physical properties of Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 and related Ir 3 Ge 7 -type materials.
