A correlation study of finite-element modeling for vibrations of composite material panels

A correlation study has been made to evaluate the effectiveness of finite-element modeling for vibrations of composite material panels. The three types of composite material panels studied were: (1) symmetrically laminated cross-ply panels, (2) unsymmetrically laminated cross-ply panels, and (3) a 1/6-scale sandwich wing model. Correlations of finite-element predictions for frequencies and vibration modes were made with Rayleigh-Ritz analyses and experimental data. For the symmetrically laminated panels, the finite-element representation predicted vibration modes very accurately. For the unsymmetrically laminated panels it was found that predictions using uncoupled finite-element plate bending elements did not give good agreement with experimental data. The constant-chord, swept-wing model was effectively analyzed by finite-element presentations using either sandwich elements or ribs and spars.

Evaluation of experimental methods for determining dynamic stiffness and damping of composite materials

Various methods potentially usable for determining dynamic stiffness and damping of composite materials are reviewed. Of these, the following most widely used techniques are singled out for more detailed discussion: free vibration, pulse propagation, and forced vibration response. To illustrate the usefulness and validity of dynamic property data, their application in dynamic analyses and comparison with measured structural response are described for the following composite-material structures: free-free sandwich beam with glass-epoxy facings, clamped-edge sandwich plate with similar facings, free-end sandwich conical shell with similar facings, and boron-epoxy free plate with layers arranged at various orientations.

Vibration characteristics of aluminum plates reinforced with boron-epoxy composite material.

Analytical and experimental data on the vibration characteristics of cantilevered winglike flat trapezoidal aluminum plates are presented. The plates had been reinforced with boron-epoxy composite material which had been placed symmetrically about the plate middle surface. The effect of filament orientation on the mode shapes and frequencies of the first ten modes and on the damping coefficients of several of the lowest frequency modes has been investigated experimentally. Experimental data are compared with results from a finite-element analysis. Stiffness properties of the composite material for use in the analysis were determined from vibration tests of composite reinforced aluminum beams.

Vibration characteristics of unidirectional filamentary composite material panels.

An experimental and analytical study of the vibration characteristics of a series of boron/epoxy composite panels with all layers having the same filament orientation has been conducted. Nodal patterns and natural frequencies are found to be highly dependent on the filament angle. Frequencies change by as much as 90 per cent with a 30-deg change in the filament angle. Measured damping coefficients are only moderately higher than those of comparative aluminum panels. There is no strong correlation between the filament angle and the amount of damping. In general, calculations based on a finite element mathematical model are in good agreement with the experimental data.
