Better Seals for Vacuum Bags

Roller tool spreads even layer of adhesive. Tool easily constructed from metal, plastic, or wood. Sewing-thread spool serves as roller, nail as axle, and jigsawed block of wood as handle. Tool rolled and pressed against plastic film to assure even layer of adhesive around periphery.

Sample Holder for Cryogenic Adhesive Shear Test

Five samples tested in one cooldown. Holder mounted in testing machine. Submerged in cryogenic liquid held in cryostat. Movable crosshead of testing machine moves gradually downward. Samples placed under tension, one after another, starting with top one; each sample fails in turn before next is stressed.

Method of bonding plasticized elastomer to metal and articles produced thereby

Plasticized elastomer was securely bonded to a metal surface by interposing between the adhesive-coated metal surface and the elastomer sheet of material obtained by combining adhesive with a portion of the elastomer that was treated to remove plasticizers therefrom and heating the assembly in a mold under pressure. The sheet material is made up by dissolving a portion of the plasticized elastomer in an organic solvent, casting the solution, exposing it to a vacuum to remove the solvent and plasticizers, dissolving the deplasticized material in liquid adhesive and casting and drying the resulting liquid.

Bonding soft rubber or plasticized elastomers to metal

Approach using bond-cover coat of unplasticized rubber between soft rubber and adhesive eliminates diffusion problem. Approach is useful in making improved seals in automobile engines, industrial and public plumbing, and in other areas using soft-rubber-to-metal bonds. Seals and gaskets made this way would not have to be replaced very often, reducing cost of maintenance.

Thin film thermoelectric devices as thermal control coatings: A study

Peltier effect, Thomson effect, and Seeback effect are utilized in design of thermal control coating that serves as versatile means for controlling heat absorbed and radiated by surface. Coatings may be useful in extreme temperature environment enclosures or as heat shields.
