Here, in this erratum to our publication, [Phys. Rev. C 62,044303 (2000)], we report the corrections to the previous level scheme of 147,151 Pr and the physical influence of those changes and other typos in the original paper.
Theoretical research has been carried out to study the effect of free-stream turbulence on sonic boom pressure fields. A new transonic small-disturbance model to analyze the interactions of random disturbances with a weak shock has been developed. The model equation has an extended form of the classic small-disturbance equation for unsteady transonic aerodynamics. An alternative approach shows that the pressure field may be described by an equation that has an extended form of the classic nonlinear acoustics equation that describes the propagation of sound beams with narrow angular spectrum. The model shows that diffraction effects, nonlinear steepening effects, focusing and caustic effects and random induced vorticity fluctuations interact simultaneously to determine the development of the shock wave in space and time and the pressure field behind it. A finite-difference algorithm to solve the mixed-type elliptic-hyperbolic flows around the shock wave has also been developed. Numerical calculations of shock wave interactions with various deterministic and random fluctuations will be presented in a future report.
A computational implementation of transonic slender body theory and the equivalence rule has been utilized to study transonic flow field around the Space Shuttle Orbiter. The far field is described by a nonlinear axisymmetric Karman-Guderley model and the near field by a cross flow Laplace equation boundary value problem. The latter is treated using a source panel method. Preliminary comparisons with experiments give encouraging indications that the model can be useful for quick turnaround estimates. Areas of refinement to obtain more accurate predictions are discussed.
The effort to develop classical methods to compute wall interference at transonic speeds is outlined. The two-dimensional theory and three-dimensional development are discussed. Also, some numerical application of the two-dimensional work are indicated. The basic advantages of the asymptotic theory are noted.
Metalized films placed between layers of fibrous material maintain equivalent thermal conductivity while cutting blanket density in half. Tests indicate that insulation with 1 lb/cu ft density with goldized films has thermal conductivity equal to 2 lb/cu ft of conventional insulation. Concept reduces weight in commercial aircraft and increases cargo space.
Serrated-stem fastener, similar to those that hold wire harnesses, has been adapted to attach blankets to supporting structures. Easy installation and removal implemented.
A computational inverse procedure for transonic airfoils in which shapes are determined supporting prescribed pressure distributions is presented. The method uses the small disturbance equation and a consistent analysis-design differencing procedure at the airfoil surface. This avoids the intermediate analysis-design-analysis iterations. The effect of any openness at the trailing edge is taken onto account by adding an effective source term in the far field. The final results from a systematic expansion procedure which models the far field for solid, ideal slotted, and free jet tunnel walls are presented along with some design results for the associated boundary conditions and those for a free flight.
Lifting line theory is applied to describe the flow about a lifting wing at transonic speeds. The method extends that of Van Dyke (1975), in which lifting line theory is viewed as a singular perturbation problem, to transonic flows. Inner and outer expansions as the aspect ratio approaches infinity of the transonic small disturbance equations are found. It is shown that the solutions match asymptotically. A boundary value problem is formulated which describes the first aspect ratio correction to the two dimensional cross sectional transonic flow. The theory is especially applicable to wings of similar cross-sections.
A systematic asymptotic expansion procedure is introduced into the Euler equations to obtain the transonic, small-disturbance potential equation and corresponding relation for the drag. The relation consists of an integral around any contour enclosing the body and an integral along all shocks contained within the contour. Interpretations are given for the origin of the pressure drag due to shock waves, lift, and wind-tunnel boundaries. Numerical procedures are discussed for evaluating these quantities from finite-difference relaxation calculations. Computed results are included for various contours, and results are compared with some experimental data.
