BeyondFingerprinting: AI-guided discovery of robust materials & processes

BeyondFingerprinting was a 2021-2024 Sandia Grand Challenge LDRD exploring the potential to develop new resilient materials and manufacturing processes by taking an artificial-intelligence (AI)-guided approach that integrates human-subject-matter expertise with algorithms enriched with physics-based constraints to unearth process-structure-property correlations. Such algorithms, trained on high-throughput experiments and simulations, are shown to serve as surrogate models that efficiently detect key “fingerprints” in materials data, prognose material performance, and guide effective process improvements. To accelerate broader adoption across mission areas, this AI-guided approach was demonstrated with three complex process-centric exemplars: electroplating, physical vapor deposition, and laser powder bed fusion. Together, these exemplars impact nearly every hardware component relevant to DOE and NNSA national security missions.

Electrodeposited platinum-gold alloy

A coating made of platinum-gold alloy is provided, together with a method of its preparation by electrodeposition. The alloy is composed of more than 50 atomic percent platinum. The microstructure of the alloy consists of generally ellipsoidal grains. More than half of the grains have a major axis of 10 nm or less.

Electroplated Au for conformal coating of high aspect ratio silicon structures

A method for electroplating a nonmetallic grating including providing a nonmetallic grating; performing an atomic layer deposition (ALD) reaction to form a seed layer on the nonmetallic grating; and electroplating a metallic layer on the seed layer such that the metallic layer uniformly and conformally coats the nonmetallic grating. An apparatus including a silicon substrate having gratings with an aspect-ratio of at least 20:1; a atomic layer deposition (ALD) seed layer formed on the gratings; and an electroplated metallic layer formed on the seed layer, wherein the electroplated metallic layer uniformly and conformally coats the gratings.
