GLAST Mission Concept Study

Cominsky served as the chair of the GLAST Public Affairs Working Group during the mission concept study. The major accomplishments of this group, which were carried out under her direction include: (1) GLAST Outreach website; (2) Brochure for scientists; (3) Brochure for public; (4) Developed the five key science goal 'bullets' to explain GLAST to the public, as well as the motto used on the GLAST brochures 'Quest for the Ultimate Sources of Energy in the Universe'; (5) Defined the EPO program for GLAST for the proposal phase. Developed initial program outline and budget; and (6) Assisted in the development of the GLAST exhibit, which was used at several scientific conferences.

XTE Observations of PSR 1259-63 and a Test of Spin Orbit Coupling in the 4U0115+63 System

During this report period, Mallory Roberts went to GSFC to analyze the data from two minor outbursts, which occurred from 4UO115+63. Unfortunately, the outbursts were not of sufficient duration to do a unique orbital determination (which was the scientific goal of the experiment). As this report is being written, 4UO115+63 is undergoing its first major outburst in four years. We are planning on adding our RXTE PCA data to any public ASM or PCA data that is obtained through the duration of this outburst, and combining it with our BATSE data from 1994 and 1995 outbursts in order to learn something about the orbital evolution in this system. We have formed a collaboration with colleagues at MIT who are working on the ASM data for this outburst. Thus, work on the original data will continue, with no further funding, and we are hopeful that some important questions with regard to the orbital timing will finally be resolved. The PSR 1259-63 data were originally analyzed by Barry Giles, who reported that no pulsations or flux were seen from this source near apastron. Recently, a new background model for low-count rate sources has been developed for the PCA. We intend to use this new background model to reanalyze these data to see if we can improve the upper limit to the flux. This work will also continue with no further funding.

Magnetospheric Accretion in PSR 1259-63

We report the results from X-ray and hard X-ray observations of the PSR B1259-63/SS 2883 system with the ASCA and the CGRO satellites, performed between 1995 February and 1996 January when the pulsar was near apastron. The system was clearly detected in each of the two ASCA observations with luminosity in the 1-10 keV band of L(sub X) = (9 +/- 3) x 10(exp 32) (d/2 kpc) erg/ s, while OSSE did not detect significant hard X-rays from the system. X-ray spectra obtained with ASCA show a single power-law spectrum with a photon index of 1.6 +/- 0.3. No pulsations were detected in either the ASCA nor the OSSE data. Combined with previous results from X-ray and hard X-ray observations, we obtained binary modulation in X-ray luminosity and photon index of high energy emission from the system for the entire orbit. The results are in agreement with predictions based on synchrotron emission model from relativistic particles in a shocked pulsar wind interacting with the gaseous outflow from the Be star.

ROSAT observations of the binary Be-star and radio pulsar PSR1259-63

This report discusses the ROSAT guest investigator program for the project 'ROSAT Observations of the Binary Be-star/Radio Pulsar PSR1259-63'. Work was done on this, and a previous grant entitled ROSAT Observations of MXB 1659-29 and EXO 0748-676 during this reporting period. A theory paper was written which proposes a new model to explain the X-ray emission from PSR 1259-63, in which the effects of accretion onto the magnetosphere of the neutron star, rather than onto the light cylinder which is conventionally assumed, is calculated. This approach works well to explain the apastron observations noted earlier. A statistical analysis of the eclipses from EXO0748-676 is also described.

ROSAT observations of the binary Be-star/radio pulsar PSR1259-63

This report covers the period January 15, 1993 through ROSAT Guest Investigator Program, for the August 1, 1993 for NASA grant NAG5-1684 project 'ROSAT Observations of the Binary received the standard output for both the initial Be-star/Radio Pulsar PSR1259-63'. We have now 10,713 second observation of PSR1259-63 (which occurred during 8/30/92 - 9/4/92) and the subsequent 36,108 second observation (during 2/7 - 16/93). The source was detected at the rate of 0.02 counts per second, or about 200 total photons in the first observation, and at about 0.03 counts per second for a total of 1200 additional photons during the second observation. In addition, significant variability, both temporal and spectral has occurred during the second data set. No pulsations at the radio period were found, with upper limits of 5-10 percent. This is in marked contrast to the lack of detection in observations made by Bailes et al., during AO2 on 2/28/92.

High time resolution studies of binary x ray pulsars

This report covers the period September 1, 1992 through August 1, 1993 for NASA grant NAG 5-1260 through the Astrophysics Data Program (ADP), for the project 'High Time Resolution Studies of Binary X-ray Pulsars'. During the past 11 months, we have concentrated on scientific analysis of the data, and have had to reanalyze several data sets, due to a newly discovered error in the unpacking of the count rate data. This error has now been corrected, but may have caused us to miss some scientific results, so we have gone back and reanalyzed the affected data sets, as well as continuing our analysis of other objects.
