High-Cooperativity Coupling of Rare-Earth Spins to a Planar Superconducting Resonator

The interfacing of a superconducting microwave resonator with rare-earth-doped crystals presents a promising hybrid quantum system for applications including spin-assisted transducers and memories. The coupling strength between the spins of the rare-earth ions and the microwave photons is characterized by the cooperativity. Here, we report an ultrahigh cooperativity of C~650 between rare-earth spins and a planar superconducting microwave resonator that features a highly uniform magnetic field for harnessing the strong anisotropic coupling strength of erbium-doped yttrium orthosilicate. This cooperativity rivals that from a bulk dielectric resonator and may pave a path for efficient coupling of spins with microwave photons on an integrated platform.

Er : Li Nb O 3 with High Optical Coherence Enabling Optical Thickness Control

Integrated photonics capable of incorporating rare-earth ions with high optical coherence is desirable for realizing efficient quantum transducers, compact quantum memories, and hybrid quantum systems. Here we describe a photonic platform based on the SmartCut erbium-doped lithium niobate thin film, and explore its stable optical transitions at telecom wavelength in a dilution refrigerator. Optical coherence time of up to 180μs, rivaling the value of bulk crystals, is achieved in optical ridge waveguides and ring resonators. With this integrated platform, we demonstrate tunable light-ion interaction and flexible control of optical thickness by exploiting long waveguides, whose lengths are in principle variable. This unique ability to obtain high optical density using low-concentration ions further leads to the observation of multiecho pulse trains in centimeter-long waveguides. Our results establish a promising photonic platform for quantum information processing with rare-earth ions.

Optical coherence and energy-level properties of a Tm 3+ -doped LiNbO 3 waveguide at subKelvin temperatures

We characterize the optical coherence and energy-level properties of the 795-nm 3 H 6 to 3 H 4 transition of Tm 3+ in a Ti 4+ :LiNbO 3 waveguide at temperatures as low as 0.65 K. Coherence properties are measured with varied temperature, magnetic field, optical excitation power and wavelength, and measurement timescale. We also investigate nuclear spin-induced hyperfine structure and population dynamics with varying magnetic field and laser excitation power. Except for accountable differences due to different Ti 4+ - and Tm 3+ -doping concentrations, we find that the properties of Tm 3+ :Ti 4+ :LiNbO 3 produced by indiffusion doping are consistent with those of a bulk-doped Tm 3+ :LiNbO 3 crystal measured under similar conditions. Furthermore, our results, which complement previous work in a narrower parameter space, support using rare-earth ions for integrated optical and quantum signal processing.
