Coexisting Multiple Martensites in Ni 57-x Mn 21+x Ga 22 Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys: Crystal Structure and Phase Transition

A comprehensive study of the crystal structure and phase transition as a function of temperature and composition in Ni 57–x Mn 21+x Ga 22 (x = 0, 2, 4, 5.5, 7, 8) (at. %) magnetic shape memory alloys was performed by a temperature-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction technique and transmission electron microscopy. A phase diagram of this Ni 57–x Mn 21+x Ga 22 alloy system was constructed. The transition between coexisting multiple martensites with monoclinic and tetragonal structures during cooling was observed in the Ni 51.5 Mn 26.5 Ga 22 (x = 5.5) alloy, and it was found that 5M + 7M multiple martensites coexist from 300 K to 160 K and that 5M + 7M + NM multiple martensites coexist between 150 K and 100 K. The magnetic-field-induced transformation from 7M martensite to NM martensite at 140 K where 5M + 7M + NM multiple martensites coexist before applying the magnetic field was observed by in situ neutron diffraction experiments. The present study is instructive for understanding the phase transition between coexisting multiple martensites under external fields and may shed light on the design of novel functional properties based on such phase transitions.

External-Field-Induced Phase Transformation and Associated Properties in a Ni 50 Mn 34 Fe 3 In 13 Metamagnetic Shape Memory Wire

Metamagnetic shape memory alloys exhibit a series of intriguing multifunctional properties and have great potential for applications in magnetic actuation, sensing and magnetic refrigeration. However, the poor mechanical properties of these alloys with hardly any tensile deformability seriously limit their practical application. In the present work, we developed a Ni-Fe-Mn-In microwire that exhibits both a giant, tensile superelasticity and a magnetic-field-induced first-order phase transformation. The recoverable strain of superelasticity is more than 20% in the temperature range of 233–283 K, which is the highest recoverable strain reported heretofore in Ni-Mn-based shape memory alloys (SMAs). Moreover, the present microwire exhibits a large shape memory effect with a recoverable strain of up to 13.9% under the constant tensile stress of 225 MPa. As a result of the magnetic-field-induced first-order phase transformation, a large reversible magnetocaloric effect with an isothermal entropy change ΔS m of 15.1 J kg –1 K –1 for a field change from 0.2 T to 5 T was achieved in this microwire. The realization of both magnetic-field and tensile-stress-induced transformations confers on this microwire great potential for application in miniature multi-functional devices and provides an opportunity for multi-functional property optimization under coupled multiple fields.

Large room-temperature elastocaloric effect in a bulk polycrystalline Ni-Ti-Cu-Co alloy with low isothermal stress hysteresis

Creation of high-performance advanced elastocaloric materials is essential for the execution of elastocaloric refrigeration that can be an environment-friendly and high-efficiency substitute for the widely used traditional vapor-compression cooling technology. Here we have developed a bulk polycrystalline Ni-Ti-Cu-Co shape memory alloy exhibiting large elastocaloric effect, low stress hysteresis and room temperature working temperature, all of which are of great importance to and urgently demanded for high-efficiency room-temperature elastocaloric refrigeration. This newly developed (Ni 42.5 Ti 50 Cu 7.5 ) 99 Co 1 alloy shows a large room-temperature elastocaloric effect with directly measured adiabatic temperature change up to -14.4 K during unloading. The stress hysteresis of the isothermal superelastic stress-strain curve is as low as 60 MPa when the maximum tensile strain is 2.7%. Owing to the large elastocaloric effect and low stress hysteresis, a very high coefficient of performance up to 19 is achieved on the material level. This newly developed (Ni 42.5 Ti 50 Cu 7.5 ) 99 Co 1 alloy is a robust candidate for efficient elastocaloric refrigeration. Advanced in-situ synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction technique was employed to reveal the phase transformation sequence and to accurately determine the crystal structure of different phases, based on which the lattice compatibility between the transforming phases was evaluated and the phase transformation strain was predicted, providing in-depth fundamental understanding of the martensitic transformation in this newly developed alloy. This work could be useful for designing high-performance elastocaloric materials for solid-state cooling applications.

Unprecedented non-hysteretic superelasticity of [001]-oriented NiCoFeGa single crystals

Superelasticity associated with the martensitic transformation has found a broad range of engineering applications. However, the intrinsic hysteresis and temperature sensitivity of the first-order phase transformation significantly hinder the usage of smart metallic components in many critical areas. In this paper, we report a large superelasticity up to 15.2% strain in [001]-oriented NiCoFeGa single crystals, exhibiting non-hysteretic mechanical responses, a small temperature dependence and high-energy-storage capability and cyclic stability over a wide temperature and composition range. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements show that the superelasticity is correlated with a stress-induced continuous variation of lattice parameter accompanied by structural fluctuation. Neutron diffraction and electron microscopy observations reveal an unprecedented microstructure consisting of atomic-level entanglement of ordered and disordered crystal structures, which can be manipulated to tune the superelasticity. The discovery of the large elasticity related to the entangled structure paves the way for exploiting elastic strain engineering and development of related functional materials. NiCoFeGa single crystals exhibit large non-hysteretic superelasticity over broad temperature and composition ranges. It is attributed to the continuous phase transition with applied stress, which is related to the fluctuation of entangled ordered and disordered crystal structures.
