The Generic Data Capture Facility

The Generic Data Capture Facility, which can provide data capture support for a variety of different types of spacecraft while enabling operations costs to be carefully controlled, is discussed. The data capture functions, data protection, isolation of users from data acquisition problems, data reconstruction, and quality and accounting are addressed. The TDM and packet data formats utilized by the system are described, and the development of generic facilities is considered.

Development and implementation of standards-based telemetry systems

The paper is concerned with the problem of appropriate data handling standards that allow the interchange of individual elements in a noninterfering manner and accomodate increasing performance needs without requiring total system replacement. An example is presented where an implementation (in software) is replaced by a new technology (VLSI circuitry), and it is shown how this approach can point the way to the next generation of telemetry handling systems.
