Hydrocarbon, Oxidation, Dehydrogenation and Coupling Over Model Metal Oxide Surfaces

Final report for a 24.5 year single investigator project aimed at understanding structure/function relationships in adsorption and reaction on metal oxide surfaces for understanding heterogeneous catalysis. An experimental surface science approach was taken using single crystal surfaces as model catalysts and supplemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Materials studied experimentally and computationally include the base metal oxide SnO 2 and transition metal oxides α-Cr 2 O 3 , α-Fe 2 O 3 and MnO.

CO adsorption on MnO(100): Experimental benchmarks compared to DFT

In this study, CO adsorption on the MnO(100) surface was studied using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and density functional theory (DFT). TPD results show that CO is weakly-bound on MnO(100), with an experimental adsorption energy of -35.6 ± 2.1 kJ/mol at terrace sites in the low coverage limit. PBE simulations suggest that CO adsorption causes an implausible (2 × 2) surface reconstruction. PBE+U simulations show no signs of surface reconstruction, and provide an accurate estimate of the adsorption energy (-36.4 kJ/mol) when combined with the DFT-D3 method with Becke-Jonson damping to correct for van der Waals interactions. This simulation also shows that CO adsorbs C-down onto the Mn 2+ terrace site in a tilted geometry, which is also observed experimentally and computationally on the similarly-structured NiO(100) transition metal oxide surface. TPD results for large doses show a plateauing of the coverage at about 0.4 monolayers of CO at 85 K, with a defect coverage equivalent to 0.08 monolayers. Adsorption associated with defect sites is indicated by a high-temperature desorption tail which is not satisfactorily explained by DFT simulations of simple step or oxygen vacancy defects.

Synthesis of a planar, multicomponent catalytic surface of Na 2 CO 3 /MnO

Here, O 2 adsorption on MnO(100) precovered with sodium (Na) multilayers was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Deposition of Na multilayers leads to a first monolayer of oxidic Na followed by metallic Na island growth. XPS results for the oxidation of the metallic Na islands indicate an incomplete oxidation of Na at 125 K. Oxidation at 350 K completely oxidizes the metallic islands producing a mixture of Na 2 O and Na 2 O 2 . Thermal evolution of the oxidation products was examined. After oxidation at 350 K and flashing to 750 K, Na 2 O and Na 2 O 2 are the primary oxides on MnO(100). After flashing to 850 K, a solid state reaction of Na 2 O 2 /Na 2 O and the MnO(100) substrate forms a NaMnO 2 -like surface compound which decomposes above 850 K. Oxygen exchange between CO 2 and Na oxides is observed. The strong interaction between CO 2 and Na oxide islands forms Na 2 CO 3 on MnO(100). Heating the Na 2 CO 3 covered MnO(100) surface to 600 K for 10 min drives oxidic Na in the first monolayer into the MnO subsurface, and produces a surface exposing islands of Na 2 CO 3 on MnO(100).

Low voltage to high voltage level shifter and related methods

A shifter circuit comprises a high and low voltage buffer stages and an output buffer stage. The high voltage buffer stage comprises multiple transistors arranged in a transistor stack having a plurality of intermediate nodes connecting individual transistors along the stack. The transistor stack is connected between a voltage level being shifted to and an input voltage. An inverter of this stage comprises multiple inputs and an output. Inverter inputs are connected to a respective intermediate node of the transistor stack. The low voltage buffer stage has an input connected to the input voltage and an output, and is operably connected to the high voltage buffer stage. The low voltage buffer stage is connected between a voltage level being shifted away from and a lower voltage. The output buffer stage is driven by the outputs of the high voltage buffer stage inverter and the low voltage buffer stage.

Surface defects and chemistry on the SnO2(110) surface

A variety of ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) surface science techniques have been used to characterize the structural, electronic and chemical properties of SnO2(110), a model catalytic surface. Two types of surface oxygen vacancies have been identified, each associated with different band gap (defect) electronic states. Adsorption experiments show that the interaction of simple gases with this surface occurs primarily through these oxygen vacancies and can show site-specificity to only one of the two types of vacancies.
