The polarization sensitivity of GRETINA

Compton polarimeters have played an important role in the study of nuclear structure physics, but have often been limited in their applications because of relatively low -ray detection efficiency. With the advent of -ray tracking detector arrays, which feature nearly solid angle coverage and the ability to identify the location of Compton-scattering events to within a few millimeters, this limitation can be overcome. Here we present a characterization of the performance of the Gamma Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array (GRETINA) as a Compton polarimeter using the 24 Mg(p,p') reaction at 2.45 MeV proton energy. We also discuss a new capability added to the simulation package UCGretina to simulate the emission of polarized photons, and compare it to the measured data. Lastly, we use these simulations to predict the performance of the Gamma Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA).

Lifetime measurements probing collectivity in the ground-state band of 32 Mg

The signatures of inversion between normal and intruder configurations of particle-hole excitations across the N = 20 shell gap in the neutron-rich isotope 32 Mg have long been of keen interest. Electromagnetic transition rates in the ground-state band are key quantities that provide insights into collective properties associated with the contributions of the 2p2h and 4p4h intruder configurations. The combination of TRIPLEX, GRETINA, and the S800 spectrograph enables model-independent lifetime measurements to determine electromagnetic transition rates in rare isotopes. The reduced E2 transition rates in 32 Mg between the 2$^{+}_{1}$ and 0$^{+}_{1}$ states and between the 4$^{+}_{1}$ and 2$^{+}_{1}$ states have been measured, the latter representing the first experimental B(E2) value for this transition. Here, the B(E2) strengths indicate large collectivity and strong contributions from the 2p2h and 4p4h intruder configurations that may change with spin in the ground-state band of 32 Mg.

Configuration mixing in 28 Mg and the 26 Mg (t,p) 28 Mg reaction

We have studied the 26 Mg(t,p) 28 Mg reaction. The nucleus 28 Mg lies between 24 Mg and 32 Mg, the latter of which is central to the “island of inversion” characterized by low-lying neutron fp-shell configurations. The present results show that the second-excited 0 + state in 28 Mg contains large fp-shell occupation for the neutrons. The experiment was performed in inverse kinematics using the HELIcal Orbit Spectrometer (HELIOS) at Argonne National Laboratory. Shell-model calculations using the SDPF-MU interaction yielded level energies and two-neutron transfer amplitudes that were used in one-step distorted-wave Furthermore, born approximation calculations to provide theoretical predictions of the proton angular distributions. In many, but not all cases, the data were in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

UCGretina geant4 simulation of the GRETINA Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array

UCGretina, a geant4 simulation of the GRETINA gamma-ray tracking array of highly-segmented high-purity germanium detectors is described. We have developed a model of the array, in particular of the Quad Module and the capsules, that gives good agreement between simulated and measured photopeak efficiencies over a broad range of gamma-ray energies and reproduces the shape of the measured Compton continuum. Both of these features are needed in order to accurately extract gamma-ray yields from spectra collected in in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements with beams traveling at v / c ≳0.3 at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. In the process of developing the model, we determined that millimeter-scale layers of passive germanium surrounding the active volumes of the simulated crystals must be included in order to reproduce measured photopeak efficiencies. In conclusion, we adopted a simple model of effective passive layers and developed heuristic methods of determining passive-layer thicknesses by comparison of simulations and measurements for a single crystal and for the full array. Prospects for future development of the model are discussed.

Search for the 1/2 + intruder state in 35 P

The excitation energy of deformed intruder states (specifically the 2p2h bandhead) as a function of proton number Z along N = 20 is of interest both in terms of better understanding the evolution of nuclear structure between spherical Ca 40 and the Island of Inversion nuclei, and for benchmarking theoretical descriptions in this region. At the center of the N = 20 Island of Inversion, the n p n h (where n = 2 , 4 , 6 ) neutron excitations across a diminished N = 20 gap result in deformed and collective ground states, as observed in Mg 32 . In heavier isotones, n p n h excitations do not dominate in the ground states but are present in the relatively low-lying level schemes. With the aim of identifying the expected 2 p 2 h x s 1 / 2 + state in P 35 , the only N = 20 isotone for which the neutron 2p2h excitation bandhead has not yet been identified, the S 36 ( d , He 3 ) P 35 reaction has been revisited in inverse kinematics with the HELical Orbit Spectrometer (HELIOS) at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS). While a candidate state has not been located, an upper limit for the transfer reaction cross section to populate such a configuration within a 2.5 to 3.6 MeV energy range provides a stringent constraint on the wave function compositions in both S 36 and P 35 .

ADC Nonlinearity Correction for the Majorana Demonstrator

Imperfections in analog-to-digital conversion cannot be ignored when signal digitization requirements demand both wide dynamic range and high resolution, as is the case for the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR 76 Ge neutrinoless double beta decay search. Enabling the experiment's high-resolution spectral analysis and efficient pulse shape discrimination required careful measurement and correction of ADC nonlinearites. Here, a simple measurement protocol was developed that did not require sophisticated equipment or lengthy data taking campaigns. A slope-dependent hysteresis was observed and characterized. A correction applied to digitized waveforms prior to signal processing reduced the differential and integral nonlinearites by an order of magnitude, eliminating these as dominant contributions to the systematic energy uncertainty at the double-beta decay Q value.

Quadrupole and octupole collectivity in 143 Ba

The neutron-rich barium nuclei have been the subject of intense interest due to the enhanced octupole correlations they are predicted to exhibit. The observation of enhanced octupole collectivity in 144,146 Ba as measured in sub-barrier Coulomb excitation, consistent with static octupole deformation, has further heightened this interest. In the present work, these studies are extended to the neighboring odd-mass 143 Ba to investigate the interplay between single-particle and collective octupole degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the first 9/2 – -state lifetime is also presented. Reflection-Asymmetric Triaxial Particle Rotor Model calculations indicate that the negative-parity bands in 143 Ba can be understood as a decoupled structure of νh 9/2 parentage, while the positiveparity bands are built on a decoupled octupole phonon. Here, no evidence for E3 excitation is observed in this work, but an upper limit is placed on the E3 matrix element to the lowest octupole band.

Core of 25 F in the rotational model

In a recent experiment, carried out at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory/RIKEN, the 25 F(p,2p) 24 O reaction was studied at 270 MeV/A in inverse kinematics. Derived spectroscopic factors suggest that the effective core of 25 F significantly differs from a free 24 O nucleus. We interpret these results within the particle-rotor model and show that the experimental level scheme of 25 F can be understood in the rotation-aligned coupling scheme with its 5/2$^{+}_{1}$ ground state as the bandhead of a decoupled band. Here, the excitation energies of the observed 1/2$^{+}_{1}$ and 9/2$^{+}_{1}$ states correlate strongly with the rotational energy of the effective core, seen by the odd proton, and allow us to estimate its 2 + energy at ≈3.2MeV and a moderate quadrupole deformation ϵ 2 ≈0.15. The measured fragmentation of the πd 5/2 single-particle strength is discussed, and some further experiments suggested.

Prompt-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich 119.121 In isotopes

The Z = 50 shell closure, near N = 82, is unique in the sense that it is the only shell closure with the spin-orbit partner orbitals, π g 9 / 2 and π g 7 / 2 , enclosing the magic gap. The interaction of the proton hole/particle in the above-mentioned orbitals with neutrons in the νh 11/2 orbital is an important prerequisite to the understanding of the nuclear structure near N = 82 and the νπ interaction. To explore the structural similarity between the high-spin isomeric states in In ( Z = 49), Sn ( Z = 50), and Sb ( Z = 51) isotopes from a microscopic point of view. In addition, to understand the role of a proton hole or particle in the spin-orbit partner orbitals, π g 9 / 2 and π g 7 / 2 , respectively, with neutron holes in the ν h 11 / 2 orbital on these aforementioned isomers. The fusion and transfer induced fission reaction Be 9 ( U 238 , f ) with 6.2 MeV/u beam energy, using a unique setup consisting of AGATA, VAMOS++, and EXOGAM detectors, was used to populate through the fission process and study the neutron-rich In 119 , 121 isotopes. This setup enabled the prompt-delayed γ -ray spectroscopy of isotopes in the time range of 100 ns – 200 μ s . In the odd- A In 119 , 121 isotopes, indications of a short half-life 19/2 - isomeric state, in addition to the previously known 25/2 + isomeric state, were observed from the present data. Further, new prompt transitions above the 25/2 + isomer in In 121 were identified along with reevaluation of its half-life. The experimental data were compared with the theoretical results obtained in the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations in a restricted model space. Furthermore, the ( π g 9 / 2 ν h 11 / 2 ; I | H ^ | π g 9 / 2 ν h 11 / 2 ; I ) two-body matrix elements of residual interaction were modified to explain the excitation energies and the B ( E 2) transition probabilities in the neutron-rich In isotopes. The (i) decreasing trend of E (29/2 + ) - E (25/2 + ) in odd-In (with dominant configuration π g 9 / 2 - 1 ν h 11 / 2 - 2 and maximum aligned spin of 29/2 + ) and (ii) increasing trend of E (27/2 + ) - E (23/2 + ) in odd-Sb (with dominant configuration π g 7 / 2 + 1 ν h 11 / 2 - 2 and maximum aligned spin of 27/2 + ) with increasing neutron number could be understood as a consequence of hole-hole and particle-hole interactions, respectively.

Identification of the New Isotope 244 Md

In an experiment performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 88-inch cyclotron, the isotope Md 244 was produced in the Bi 209 ( Ar 40 , 5 n ) reaction. Decay properties of Md 244 were measured at the focal plane of the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator, and the mass number assignment of A = 244 was confirmed with the apparatus for the identification of nuclide A . The isotope Md 244 is reported to have one, possibly two, α -decaying states with α energies of 8.66(2) and 8.31(2) MeV and half-lives of 0.4 – 0.1 + 0.4 and ~ 6 s , respectively. Furtermore, first evidence of the α decay of Bk 236 was observed and is reported.

Analysis of the 18 F g,m (d,p) 19 F reactions in the rotational model

Spectroscopic strengths for the 18 F g , m ( d , p ) F 19 reactions to members of the ground-state band in F 19 are interpreted in the rotational model. The analysis considers two different coupling schemes, namely, the strong and decoupled limits of the particle rotor model to describe the ground and isomeric states of F 18 , as well as the transitions to the ground-state band in F 19 . Our results, obtained using Nilsson amplitudes for the neutron levels 1 2 [ 220 ] , 3 2 [ 211 ] , and 5 2 [ 202 ] calculated at a deformation ε 2 = 0.32 are in agreement with the measurements and USDB shell-model calculations.

Extending the Southern Shore of the Island of Inversion to F 28

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus 28 F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from 29 Ne/ 29 F beams at energies around 230 MeV / nucleon . The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the 27 F(*) + n and 26 F(*) + 2n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the 28 F ground state, with S n ( 28 F) = -199(6) keV, while analysis of the 2n decay channel allowed a considerably improved S n ( 27 F) = 162(60) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of 28 F. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed 27 F + n momentum distribution following neutron removal from 29 F indicates that it arises mainly from the 1p 3/2 neutron intruder configuration. Finally, this demonstrates that the island of inversion around N = 20 includes 28 F, and most probably 29 F, and suggests that 28 O is not doubly magic.

Enhancement of α -particle formation near Sn 100

The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of ground-state-to-ground-state α decay in the even-even neutron-deficient Te-Ba nuclei. Here, we show that there is a larger α-particle formation probability in nuclei of this region above 100 Sn when compared to analogous nuclei above 208 Pb. This is consistent with the expected systematic variation of the pair gap Δ as a function of mass number. Finally, the recent experimental data on the α decay of the N=Z nuclei 104 Te and 108 Xe are shown to leave open the possibility of enhanced α-particle formation involving nucleon correlations beyond the standard treatment of like-nucleon pairing, which is the mechanism suggested as underlying "superallowed" α decay.
