Investigation of the \(\gamma \)-ray Properties of the \(2^+\) States in \(^{14}\)C

The properties of the 2$^+_1$ and 2$^+_2$ excited states in 14 C were studied in an experiment conducted at Argonne National Laboratory. A 9 Be( 6 Li,pγ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GRETINA-ORRUBA setup were employed to populate states of 14 C and detect γ-particle coincidence events. Finally, the precise determination of the 2$^+_1$ level energy, complemented by the estimation of the γ-ray branch of the 2$^+_2$ near-threshold state, will serve as a benchmark to test the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum calculations.

Photo-response of the $N=Z$ nucleus $^{24}$Mg

The electric E1 and magnetic M1 dipole responses of the N = Z nucleus 24 Mg were investigated in an inelastic photon scattering experiment. The 13.0 MeV electrons, which were used to produce the unpolarised bremsstrahlung in the entrance channel of the 24 Mg(γ,γ') reaction, were delivered by the ELBE accelerator of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The collimated bremsstrahlung photons excited one J π = 1 – , four J π = 1 + , and six J π = 2 + states in 24 Mg. De-excitation γ rays were detected using the four high-purity germanium detectors of the γELBE setup, which is dedicated to nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments. In the energy region up to 13.0 MeV a total B(M1)↑ = 2.7(3) $μ$$^{2}_{N}$ is observed, but this N = Z nucleus exhibits only marginal E1 strength of less than ΣB(E1)↑≤ 0.61 × 10 –3 e 2 fm 2 . The B(Π1, $1$$^{π}_{i}$ → $2$$^{+}_{1}$)/B(Π1,$1$$^{π}_{i}$ → $0$$^{+}_{gs}$) branching ratios in combination with the expected results from the Alaga rules demonstrate that K is a good approximative quantum number for 24 Mg. The use of the known ρ 2 (E0, $0$$^{+}_{2}$ → $0$$^{+}_{gs}$) strength and the measured B(M1,1 + → $0$$^{+}_{2}$)/B(M1,1 + → $0$$^{+}_{gs}$) branching ratio of the 10.712 MeV 1 + level allows, in a two-state mixing model, an extraction of the difference Δ$β$$^{2}_{2}$ between the prolate ground-state structure and shape-coexisting superdeformed structure built upon the 6432-keV $0$$^{+}_{2}$ level.

Lifetime measurements in the even-even Cd 102 – 108 isotopes

The heaviest T z = 0 doubly-magic nucleus, Sn 100 , and the neighboring nuclei offer unique opportunities to investigate the properties of nuclear interaction. For instance, the structure of light-Sn nuclei has been shown to be affected by the delicate balance between nuclear-interaction components, such as pairing and quadrupole correlations. From Cd to Te, many common features and phenomena have been observed experimentally along the isotopic chains, leading to theoretical studies devoted to a more general and comprehensive study of the region. In this context, having only two proton holes in the Z = 50 shell, the Cd isotopes are expected to present properties similar to those found in the Sn isotopic chain. The aim of this work was to measure lifetimes of excited states in neutron-deficient nuclei in the vicinity of Sn 100 . Here, the neutron-deficient nuclei in the N ≈ Z ≈ 50 region were populated using a multinucleon transfer reaction with a Cd 106 beam and a Mo 92 target. The beamlike products were identified by the VAMOS + + spectrometer, while the γ rays were detected using the AGATA array. Lifetimes of excited states were determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift method, employing the Cologne differential plunger. Lifetimes of low-lying states were measured in the even-mass Cd 102 – 108 isotopes. In particular, multiple states with excitation energy up to ≈ 3 MeV, belonging to various bands, were populated in Cd 106 via inelastic scattering. The transition strengths corresponding to the measured lifetimes were compared with those resulting from state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing approach. Conclusions: Despite the similarities in the electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states, there is a fundamental structural difference between the ground-state bands in the Z = 48 and Z = 50 isotopes. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results revealed a rotational character of the Cd nuclei, which have prolate-deformed ground states with β 2 ≈ 0.2 . At this deformation Z = 48 becomes a closed-shell configuration, which is favored with respect to the spherical one.

The GALILEO γ-ray array at the Legnaro National Laboratories

GALILEO, a new 4 pi high-resolution gamma-detection array, based on HPGe detectors, has been developed and installed at the Legnaro National Laboratories. The GALILEO array greatly benefits from a fully-digital readout chain, customized DAQ, and a variety of complementary detectors to improve the resolving power by the detection of particles, ions or high-energy gamma-ray transitions. In this paper, a full description of the array, including electronics and DAQ, is presented together with its complementary instrumentation.
