Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

LiMo 8 O 10 : Polar Crystal Structure with Infinite Edge-Sharing Molybdenum Octahedra

Here, polycrystalline LiMo 8 O 10 was prepared in a sealed Mo crucible at 1380 °C for 48 h using the conventional high-temperature solid-state method. The polar tetragonal crystal structure (space group I4 1 md) is confirmed based on the Rietveld refinement of powder neutron diffraction and 7 Li/ 6 Li solid-state NMR. The crystal structure features infinite chains of Mo 4 O 5 (i.e., Mo 2 Mo 4/2 O 6/2 O 6/3 ) as a repeat unit containing edge-sharing Mo 6 octahedra with strong Mo–Mo metal bonding along the chain. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy of the Mo-L 3 edge is consistent with the formal Mo valence/configuration. Magnetic measurements reveal that LiMo 8 O 10 is paramagnetic down to 1.8 K. Temperature-dependent resistivity [ρ(T)] measurement indicates a semiconducting behavior that can be fitted with Mott’s variable range hopping conduction mechanism in the temperature range of 215 and 45 K. The ρ(T) curve exhibits an exponential increase below 5 K with a large ratio of ρ 1.8 /ρ 300 = 435. LiMo 8 O 10 shows a negative field-dependent magnetoresistance between 2 and 25 K. Heat capacity measurement fitted with the modified Debye model yields the Debye temperature of 365 K.

Spin Reorientation in Antiferromagnetic MnPd 5 Se with an Anti-CeCoIn 5 Structure Type

MnPd 5 Se, a derivative of the anti-CeCoIn 5 -type phase, was synthesized from a high-temperature solid-state reaction, structurally determined by X-ray diffraction, and magnetically characterized with a combined magnetic measurement and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). According to the X-ray diffraction results, MnPd 5 Se crystallizes in a layered tetragonal structure with the same space group as CeCoIn 5 , P4/mmm (No. 123). MnPd5Se shows antiferromagnetic ordering around 80 K on the basis of the magnetic property measurements. An A-type antiferromagnetic structure was revealed from the analysis of neutron powder diffraction results at 300, 50, and 6 K. Moreover, a spin orientation rotation was observed as the temperature decreased. Pd L 3 X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy results for MnPd5Se semiqualitatively correlate with the calculated density of states supporting a nominal 0.2 electron transfer into the Pd d orbital from either Se or Mn in the compound. The discovery of MnPd 5 Se, along with our previously reported MnT 5 Pn (T = Pd or Pt; Pn = P or As), provides a tunable system for studying the magnetic ordering from ferromagnetism to antiferromagnetism with the strong spin–orbit coupling effect.

Iridate Li8IrO 6 : An Antiferromagnetic Insulator

In this work, a polycrystalline iridate Li 8 IrO 6 material was prepared via heating Li 2 O and IrO 2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li 8 IrO 6 adopts the nonpolar space group $R\bar{3}$ with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO 4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO 6 and LiO 6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c -axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir 4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li 8 IrO 6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment $μ_{\text{eff}}$ (Ir) = 1.73 $μ_{\text{B}}$ and insulating character indicate that Li 8 IrO 6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.

A Polar Magnetic and Insulating Double Corundum Oxide: Mn2MnSbO6 with Ordered Mn(II) and Mn(III) Ions

A new magnetic insulator Mn2MnSbO6 with a polar crystal structure and an ordered Mn2+ and Mn3+ arrangement was synthesized under a high pressure of 7.5 GPa and 1300 degrees C. The crystal structure of Mn2MnSbO6, investigated by synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, was found to be isomorphous with that of Ni3TeO6-type, space group R3. The non-centrosymmetric structure was confirmed by the second-harmonic generation measurements. The X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurement confirmed the nominal oxidation states of Mn22+Mn3+SbO6. Magnetic measurements indicate that Mn2MnSbO6 orders antiferromagnetically below 44 K and undergoes a field-induced spin-flop transition at 5 K. First-principles calculations indicate an antiferromagnetic ground state with up/up/up/down/down/down (uuuddd) spin configuration of the six crystallographically unique Mn ions in the c-axis doubled magnetic structure. The density functional theory calculations also substantiate the experimentally observed charge ordering of the Mn2+/Mn3+ ions and the insulating behavior due to a bandgap of 0.52 eV. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first double corundum oxide containing Jahn-Teller active Mn3+ ions.

Defect-engineered room-temperature ferromagnetism in quasi-two-dimensional nitrided CoTa 2 O 6

Thermal ammonolysis of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) CoTa 2 O 6 yields the O 2– /N 3– and anionic vacancy-ordered Co 2+ $Ta^{5+}_{2}$O 6–x N 2x/3 $\square$ x/3 (x $\leqslant$ 0.15), which exhibits a transition from antiferromagnetism to defect-engineered above-room-temperature ferromagnetism. First-principles calculations reveal that the origin of ferromagnetism is a particular CoO 5 N configuration with N located at Wyckoff position 8j, which breaks mirror symmetry about the ab plane. A pressure-induced electronic phase transition is also predicted at ~24.5 GPa, accompanied by insulator-to-metal transition and magnetic moment vanishing.

Data-driven computational prediction and experimental realization of exotic perovskite-related polar magnets

Rational design of technologically important exotic perovskites is hampered by the insufficient geometrical descriptors and costly and extremely high-pressure synthesis, while the big-data driven compositional identification and precise prediction entangles full understanding of the possible polymorphs and complicated multidimensional calculations of the chemical and thermodynamic parameter space. Here we present a rapid systematic data-mining-driven approach to design exotic perovskites in a high-throughput and discovery speed of the A 2 BB ’O 6 family as exemplified in A 3 TeO 6 . The magnetoelectric polar magnet Co 3 TeO 6 , which is theoretically recognized and experimentally realized at 5 GPa from the six possible polymorphs, undergoes two magnetic transitions at 24 and 58 K and exhibits helical spin structure accompanied by magnetoelastic and magnetoelectric coupling. We expect the applied approach will accelerate the systematic and rapid discovery of new exotic perovskites in a high-throughput manner and can be extended to arbitrary applications in other families.

Single-Crystal Growth and Room-Temperature Magnetocaloric Effect of X-Type Hexaferrite Sr 2 Co 2 Fe 28 O 46

X-type hexaferrites have been receiving considerable attention due to their promising applications in many magnetic-electronic fields. However, the growth of single-crystal X-type hexaferrite is still a challenge. Herein we reported, for the first time, the preparation of single crystal X-type hexaferrite Sr 2 Co 2 Fe 28 O 46 (Sr 2 Co 2 X) with high-quality and large size using floating-zone method with laser as the heating source. The crystals show rhombohedral symmetry with space group of R-3m (No. 166, a = 5.8935(1) Å and c = 83.7438(17) Å). Co 2+ and Fe 3+ oxidation states were confirmed by the X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. The prepared Sr 2 Co 2 X exhibits a spin reorientation transition from easy-cone to easy-axis at T 2 of 343 K and a ferrimagnetism–paramagnetism transition at Curie temperature (TC) of ~743 K. The spin reorientation transition was accompanied by magnetocaloric effect (MCE). Both conventional and inverse MCEs were observed near T 2 with a magnetic field applied along the c-axis. The maximum value of the magnetic entropy change along the c-axis was evaluated to be 1.1 J/kg·K for a magnetic field change of 5 T.

A Pressure-Induced Inverse Order–Disorder Transition in Double Perovskites

Chemical intuition tells us that pressure increases ordering in most known materials. The discovery of pressure-induced disorder in the double perovskites Y 2 CoIrO 6 and Y 2 CoRuO 6 , which is reported by Z. Deng, C.-J. Kang, C. Jin, M. Greenblatt, and co-workers in their Research Article on page 8240, is in contrast to traditional theories of order–disorder mechanisms and calls for reconsideration of pressure effects in solid state sciences.

A Pressure‐Induced Inverse Order–Disorder Transition in Double Perovskites

Abstract Given the consensus that pressure improves cation ordering in most of known materials, a discovery of pressure‐induced disordering could require recognition of an order–disorder transition in solid‐state physics/chemistry and geophysics. Double perovskites Y 2 CoIrO 6 and Y 2 CoRuO 6 polymorphs synthesized at 0, 6, and 15 GPa show B‐site ordering, partial ordering, and disordering, respectively, accompanied by lattice compression and crystal structure alteration from monoclinic to orthorhombic symmetry. Correspondingly, the long‐range ferrimagnetic ordering in the B‐site ordered samples are gradually overwhelmed by B‐site disorder. Theoretical calculations suggest that unusual unit‐cell compressions under external pressures unexpectedly stabilize the disordered phases of Y 2 CoIrO 6 and Y 2 CoRuO 6 .
