Temperature dependent electronic quenching of OH(A 2 Sigma +, v-prime = 0) between 230 and 310 K

The present study is concerned with the electronic quenching of OH(A 2 Sigma +, v-prime = 0) at and below room temperature, taking into account the use of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) in a low pressure flow cell for H2, CO2, O2, and N2 colliders. The reasons for the selection of the temperature range and the collision partners are related to the quantitative calibration of OH detection techniques in the troposphere, and to considerations of electronic quenching dynamics. Attention is given to production and rotational distribution, temperature measurements, and temperature dependent quenching rate constants.

Rotational-level-dependent quenching of A2Sigma(+) OH and OD

The role of rotation in the collisional quenching of the A2Sigma(+) v' = 0 states of OH and OD is investigated experimentally by laser-induced-fluorescence measurements in a two-chamber differentially pumped flow chamber similar to that of McDermid and Laudenslager (1982). The experimental apparatus is described in detail, and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs. Collisional-quenching rate constants are determined for 21 different quenchers at various specific N' rotational levels and shown to decrease as the rotational quantum number increases, with no significant role for the internal levels of the colliding pairs and reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations incorporating attractive forces.

Lambda-doublet transfer and propensities in collisions of OH (X2Pi/i/, v = 2) with H2O

The present work is concerned with the changes in electronic parity (e/f states) during rotationally elastic and inelastic collisions. In the OH X2Pi(i) molecule considered in the study, the differences in the e/f state production in the photodissociation of both H2O and HONO1, in the H + O2 reaction, and in the initial-state-unselected H2-OH collisions, have been experimentally examined.

Relative fine-structure intensities in two-photon excitation

A discrepancy is pointed out between experimental determinations of the relative intensities for different fine-structure components of the two-photon transitions 2p3P 3p3P in oxygen and 2p3 4S0 - 2p2 3p4D0 in nitrogen, which agreed well with calculations involving a single virtual intermediate level, and a two-photon selection rule dJ not equal to one, derived in a purely theoretical and erroneous treatment of these transitions. Five other experiments are also briefly examined, with the conclusion that relative fine-structure intensities in two-photon transitions are well understood as straightforward extensions of angular momentum coupling in single-photon cases, in accordance with allowed dJ = 0, + or -1, and + or -2 transitions.

Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy for combustion diagnostics

The types of spectroscopic and collisional measurements that are needed to develop laser-induced fluorescence as a diagnostic technique are discussed, with emphasis placed on combustion measurements. The spectroscopic measurements under collision-free conditions include production of radicals, excitation scan studies, lifetime measurements, and fluorescence scans. The collisional studies discussed here are quenching, energy transfer, and polarization phenomena. The results of recent laboratory experiments are presented.
