An indium-based microporous metal–organic framework with unique three-way rod-shaped secondary building units for efficient methane and hydrogen storage

A novel microporous indium-based MOF material with unique 3-way rod-shaped secondary building units (SBUs), UTSA-22, was reported and exhibited high methane (CH 4 ) and hydrogen (H 2 ) storage. At 298 K and 65 bar, the total CH 4 volumetric uptake of UTSA-22 is 174 cm 3 (STP) cm -3 . Moreover, UTSA-22 shows a high CH 4 working capacity of 146 cm 3 (STP) cm -3 in a pressure range of 5–65 bar at 298 K. Additionally, UTSA-22 shows a high H 2 gravimetric storage capacity (1.2 wt%) at 298 K and 100 bar.

Metal–Organic Framework Based Hydrogen-Bonding Nanotrap for Efficient Acetylene Storage and Separation

The removal of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) is a critical industrial process for manufacturing high purity C 2 H 2 . However, it remains challenging to address the trade-off between adsorption capacity and selectivity, on account of their similar physical properties and molecular sizes. To overcome this difficulty, here we report a novel strategy involving the regulation of hydrogen-bonding nanotrap on the pore surface to promote the separation of C 2 H 2 /CO 2 mixtures, in three isostructural metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, named as MIL-160, CAU-10H, and CAU-23, respectively). Among them, MIL-160, which has abundant hydrogen-bonding acceptors as nanotraps, can selectively capture acetylene molecules and demonstrates ultra-high C 2 H 2 storage capacity (191 cm 3 g –1 , or 213 cm 3 cm –3 ) but much less CO 2 uptake (90 cm 3 g –1 ) under ambient conditions. The C 2 H 2 adsorption amount of MIL-160 is remarkably higher than the other two isostructural MOFs (86 cm 3 g –1 and 119 cm 3 g –1 for CAU-10H and CAU-23 respectively) under the same conditions. More importantly, both simulation and experimental breakthrough results show that MIL-160 sets a new benchmark for equimolar C 2 H 2 /CO 2 separation in terms of the separation potential (Δq break = 5.02 mol/kg) and C 2 H 2 productivity (6.8 mol/kg). In addition, in-situ FT-IR experiments combined with computational modeling further reveal that the unique host-guest multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions between the nanotrap and C 2 H 2 is the key factor for achieving extraordinary acetylene storage capacity and superior C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity. Furthermore, this work provides a novel and powerful approach to address the trade-off of this extremely challenging gas separation.

A Molecular Compound for Highly Selective Purification of Ethylene

Purification of C 2 H 4 from an C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixture is one of the most challenging separation processes, which is achieved mainly through energy-intensive, cryogenic distillation in industry. Sustainable, non-distillation methods are highly desired as alternatives. We discovered that the fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported copper(I) complex {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 has features very desirable in an olefin–paraffin separation material. It binds ethylene exclusively over ethane generating [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ). This molecular compound exhibits extremely high and record ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 gas separation selectivity, affording high purity (>99.5 %) ethylene that can be readily desorbed from separation columns. In-situ PXRD provides a “live” picture of the reversible conversion between [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) and the ethylene-free sorbent in the solid-state, driven by the presence or removal of C 2 H 4 . As a result, molecular structures of trinuclear {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 and mononuclear [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) are also presented.

Doubly Interpenetrated Metal-Organic Framework of pcu Topology for Selective Separation of Propylene from Propane

We report that adsorptive separation is an appealing alternative technology to reduce the high energy and capital cost of the distillation separation of propylene/propane; however, it is very challenging to realize. A new flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) material [Zn 2 (BDC-Cl) 2 (Py 2 TTz)] with a doubly interpenetrated pillared paddle wheel structure of pcu (primitive cubic) topology has been realized for this difficult separation for the first time. Through a judicious choice of linkers, the framework has small pore apertures that lead to much more propylene adsorption than propane. The selective adsorption relies on the sieving effect of the flexible framework. The column breakthrough experiment further demonstrated that efficient separation can be achieved under dynamic conditions.
