Climatology of Linear Mesoscale Convective System Morphology in the United States based on Random Forests Method

This study uses machine learning methods, specifically the random forest (RF), on a radar-based mesoscale convective system (MCS) tracking dataset to classify the five types of linear MCS morphology in the contiguous United States during the period 2004-2016. The algorithm is trained using radar- and satellite-derived spatial and morphological parameters, and reanalysis environmental information from 5-26yr manually identified nonlinear and five linear MCS modes. The algorithm is then used to automate the classification of linear MCSs over 8 years with high accuracy, providing a systematic, long-term climatology of linear MCSs. Results reveal that nearly 40% of MCSs are classified as linear MCSs, in which half of the linear events belong to the type of system having a leading convective line. The occurrence of linear MCSs shows large annual and seasonal variations. On average, 113 linear MCSs occur annually during the warm season (through March to October), with most of these events clustered from May through August in the central eastern Great Plains. MCS characteristics, including duration, propagation speed, orientation, and system cloud size, have large variability among the different linear modes. The systems having a trailing convective line and the systems having a back-building area of convection typically move more slowly and have higher precipitation rate, and thus have higher potential in producing extreme rainfall and flash flooding. Analysis of the environmental conditions associated with linear MCSs show that the storm-relative flow is of most importance in determining the organization mode of linear MCSs.

Dimensional Control of Octahedral Tilt in SrRuO 3 via Infinite-Layered Oxides

Manipulation of octahedral distortion at atomic scale is an effective means to tune the ground states of functional oxides. Previous work demonstrates that strain and film thickness are variable parameters to modify the octahedral parameters. However, selective control of bonding geometry by structural propagation from adjacent layers is rarely studied. Here we propose a new route to tune the ferromagnetism in SrRuO 3 (SRO) ultrathin layers by oxygen coordination of adjacent SrCuO 2 (SCO) layers. The infinite-layered CuO 2 exhibits a structural transformation from “planar-type” to “chain-type” with reduced film thickness. Two orientations dramatically modify the polyhedral connectivity at the interface, thus altering the octahedral distortion of SRO. The local structural variation changes the spin state of Ru and orbital hybridization strength, leading to a significant change in the magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall resistivity. Furthermore, these findings could launch investigations into adaptive control of functionalities in quantum oxide heterostructures using oxygen coordination.

Statistical Characteristics of Raindrop Size Distributions and Parameters in Central China during the Meiyu Seasons

The rain parameters measured by the laser OTT Parsivel raindrop disdrometer (Parsivel), the two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) and DZZ5 tipping-bucket rain gauge (RG) during the Integrative Monsoon Frontal Rainfall Experiment (IMFRE) in summer 2018 are compared. The total rain amounts observed by Parsivel, 2DVD, and RG during IMFRE are 178.07 mm, 176.76 mm and 182.5 mm, while their total rainy hours are 113, 113 and 90. The mean Dm (mass-weighted mean diameter) and liquid water content values derived from Parsivel and 2DVD are 0.9 mm and 1.02 mm, and 0.247 g m-3 and 0.223 g m-3, respectively, and Parsivel is more sensitive to small raindrops (< 1 mm) than 2DVD. The raindrop spectra measured by Parsivel and 2DVD have excellent agreement for both convective rain (CR) and stratiform rain (SR) within a range of Dm from 1 to 3.5 mm. The rain samples from six Parsivel sites over the middle reaches of the Yangtze River during the 2016–2018 meiyu seasons have been collected and processed. The frequency occurrences for rain rates (RR) < 5 and > 10 mm h-1 are 83.9% and 7.4%, respectively, but they contribute 30.5% and 52.1 % of the total accumulated rainfall. Comparing the results with those over the lower reaches, the RR and total accumulated rainfall over the middle reaches are greater, especially for heavy rainfall. The rain drop size distributions (DSDs) in this study are wider and have higher number concentration than those from the lower reaches.

Atomic defects, functional groups and properties in MXenes

MXenes, a new family of functional two-dimensional (2D) materials, have shown great potential for an extensive variety of applications within the last decade. Atomic defects and functional groups in MXenes are known to have a tremendous influence on the functional properties. In this review, we focus on recent progress in the characterization of atomic defects and functional group chemistry in MXenes, and how to control them to directly influence various properties ( e.g ., electron transport, Li + adsorption, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and magnetism) of 2D MXenes materials. Dynamic structural transformations such as oxidation and growth induced by atomic defects in MXenes are also discussed. The review thus provides perspectives on property optimization through atomic defect engineering, and bottom-up synthesis methods based on defect-assisted homoepitaxial growth of MXenes.

Cloud and Precipitation Properties of MCSs Along the Meiyu Frontal Zone in Central and Southern China and Their Associated Large-Scale Environments

This study focuses on investigating the cloud and precipitation features of Meiyu mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) and their relation to the large-scale environments in central and southern China using satellite observations and reanalysis data during the period 2014–2018. MCSs from two different locations, the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) and Southern China (SC), are examined separately. The Meiyu MCSs have a mean precipitation rate of 3.6 mm/hr and contribute 20% to 60% of the total precipitation during the Meiyu period. The diurnal cycle of Meiyu MCSs shows a maximum precipitation amount in the morning, which is associated with the enhanced nocturnal low-level jet (LLJ) overnight. Although the synoptic setups in YRB and SC are found to be similar when normalized around the MCS initiation locations, MCSs exhibit some differences in terms of the cloud top height, precipitation rate, and duration, which are likely by the differences in the local forcing. Large interannual variations are found in MCSs' number, cloud size, lifetime, and rainfall intensity, which is found to be associated with the interannual variabilities in the large-scale environments. By comparing the large-scale environments with climatological mean states, we find that the year with the most intense MCS activity during the study period is characterized by an intensified southwesterly LLJ, which increases the moisture transport from the Indian Ocean and an enhancement of the midtropospheric westerly jet, which induces adiabatic ascent along the Meiyu front, creating more favorable conditions for convection.
