Macroscopic approach to the radar echo scatter from high-energy particle cascades

To probe the cosmic particle flux at the highest energies, large volumes of dense material like ice have to be monitored. This can be achieved by exploiting the radio signal. In this work, we provide a macroscopic model to predict the radar echo signatures found when a radio signal is reflected from a cosmic-ray or neutrino-induced particle cascade propagating in a dense medium like ice. Its macroscopic nature allows for an energy independent run-time, taking less than 10 s for simulating a single scatter event. As a first application, we discuss basic signal properties and simulate the expected signal for the T-576 beam-test experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Finally, we find good signal strength agreement with the only observed radar echo from a high-energy particle cascade to date.

The Isotopic Composition of Cosmic-Ray Iron and Nickel

Observations from the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) on ACE have been used to derive contraints on the locations, physical conditions, and time scales for cosmic-ray acceleration and transport.

Energetic (sup 3)He in the Interplanetary Medium and its Acceleration by Shocks

Observations of number of relatively large solar energetic particle (SEP) events that have occurred since the launch of ACE in August 1997 have shown that the ratio of (sup 3)He/(sup 4)He can be enhanced over the solar wind value by more than an order magnitude in such events.

Two-Dimensional Interdigitated Pixel Detector for Energetic Particle Spectrometers

This paper describes a type of cosmic ray detector suitable for the construction of a small, low power space-based instrument to detect the energy and isotope of energetic nuclei, such as those produced by solar flares. The detector is similar to previous types of silicon PIN detectors where the fully depleted body of the wafer comprises intrinsic region of the PIN structure. The novel aspect of this detector is that the one surface is divided into a two-dimensional array of pixels, and that the collected holes are divided between a row and a column collector in each pixel, yielding both dimensions of position information from this side of the detector.

Concept to standardize space vehicle piggyback experiment modules

Study investigates the use of spent launch vehicle stages and modules to support earth orbital operations and functions after successful completion of the primary mission. Emphasis is placed primarily on determination of those uses that afford the greatest utility with minimum possibility of degradation to the primary mission.
