ISTP Solar Maximum Extended Science Program

We have studied the entry of solar energetic particles (SEPS) into the magnetosphere by following particles in the time dependent magnetic and electric field from global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the magnetosphere. The MHD simulations can either be for idealized interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions, or for upstream conditions measured by spacecraft. An important part of the analysis is understanding the response of the magnetosphere to the IMF conditions. In the idealized case, the MHD simulation included a steady interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) B(sub x), velocity and density, while the B(sub y) and B(sub z) components were varied from southward IMF to dawnward and finally to northward IMF. We launched more than ten million protons, as well as about 1 million He-3 ions and a few thousand electrons upstream of the magnetosphere into the solar wind. They were initialized using a kappa distribution, which is a power law distribution with a power law coefficient of 1.5 at high energies. The particles had energies between 0. 1 and 50 MeV. The particles were run in time dependent MHD fields that were advanced in time as the particles moved through the system.

Interactive Learning During Solar Maximum

The goal of this project is to develop and distribute e-educational material for space science during times of solar activity that emphasizes underlying basic science principles of solar disturbances and their effects on Earth. This includes materials such as simulations, animations, group projects and other on-line materials to be used by students either in high school or at the introductory college level. The on-line delivery tool originally intended to be used is known as Interactive Multimedia Education at a Distance (IMED), which is a web-based software system used at UCLA for interactive distance learning. IMED is a password controlled system that allows students to access text, images, bulletin boards, chat rooms, animation, simulations and individual student web sites to study science and to collaborate on group projects.

General Information: Chapman Conference on Magnetospheric Current Systems

The goal of this conference is to address recent achievements of observational, computational, theoretical, and modeling studies, and to foster communication among people working with different approaches. Electric current systems play an important role in the energetics of the magnetosphere. This conference will target outstanding issues related to magnetospheric current systems, placing its emphasis on interregional processes and driving mechanisms of current systems.

Review of Recent Results in Global MHD Modeling: ISTP Project Scientist for Theory and Ground-Based Observations

Global MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) simulations have shown a remarkable ability to describe the global dynamics of geospace. The limitations of the physical approximations underlying MHD would seem to limit the effectiveness of these codes, since kinetic and hybrid effects should manifest themselves by cross-scale coupling from microscales to mesoscales to global scales. However three effects appear to allow the codes to operate much more successfully than one would at first believe. They are:(l) the globally self-consistent nature of the codes with very well defined exterior boundary conditions (the solar wind) which allows the proper intercommunication between magnetospheric regions on MHD scales, (2) the control by global dynamics of the boundary layer locations where micro and meso scale processes operate, and (3) the critical role of numerical diffusion and with a sufficiently high resolution grid, the use of an empirical resistivity term, which if set at a level where the major magnetosphere boundaries properly calibrate against their observed locations, appear to well represent the effects of kinetic and hybrid processes on the global dynamics. The effectiveness of the global MHD codes, which have been developed under the ISTP mission, in describing Wind, Polar and Geotail observations, as well as ground-based observations are described. Particular emphasis is placed upon the Polar imaging data which when combined with ground-based data and global MHD-based synthetic aurora and convection patterns provide a powerful tool in understanding the final link in the solar-terrestrial chain: coupling into the atmosphere and ionosphere.

Report of the theory panel

The ultimate goal of this research is to develop an understanding which is sufficiently comprehensive to allow realistic predictions of the behavior of the physical systems. Theory has a central role to play in the quest for this understanding. The level of theoretical description is dependent on three constraints: (1) the available computer hardware may limit both the number and the size of physical processes the model system can describe; (2) the fact that some natural systems may only be described in a statistical manner; and (3) the fact that some natural systems may be observable only through remote sensing which is intrinsically limited by spatial resolution and line of sight integration. From this the report discusses present accomplishments and future goals of theoretical space physics. Finally, the development and use of new supercomputer is examined.
