A Study of Pulse Shape Evolution and X-Ray Reprocessing in Her X-1

This study focused on the pulse shape evolution and spectral properties of the X-ray binary Her X-1 with regard to the well known 35-day cycle of Her X-1. A follow-up set of RXTE observations has been conducted in RXTE AO-2 phase and the two observation sets are being analyzed together. We presented results of early analysis of pulse shape evolution in "Proceedings of the Fourth Compton Symposium". More advanced analysis was presented at the HEAD meeting in November, 1997 in Estes Park, Colorado. A related study of the 35-day cycle using RXTE/ASM data, which laid out the overall picture within which the more detailed PCA observations could be placed has also been conducted. The results of this study have been published. A pair of papers on the detailed pulse evolution and the spectral/color evolution are currently being prepared for publication. Some of the significant results of this study have been a confirmation of the detailed pulse profile changes at the end of the Main High state in HerX-1 first observed by GINGA, observations of the pulse evolution in several Short High states which agree with the pulse evolution pattern predicted using a disk occultation model, observation of a systematic lengthening of the eclipse egress during the Main High state of the 35-day phase and observation of a new type of extended eclipse ingress during which pulsations cease to observed during the Short High state.

Crystal Growth of ZnSe and Related Ternary Compound Semiconductors by Physical Vapor Transport

Preliminary definition of all of the necessary materials, labor, services, and facilities necessary to provide science requirement definition, initiate hardware development activities, and provide an update flight program proposal consistent with the NRA selection letter. The major tasks identified in this SOW are in the general category of science requirements determination, instrument definition, and updated flight program proposal. The Contractor shall define preliminary management, technical and integration requirements for the program, including improved cost/schedule estimates. The Contractor shall identify new technology requirements, define experiment accommodations and operational requirements and negotiate procurement of any long lead items, if required, with the government.

Atmospheric numerical modeling resource enhancement and model convective parameterization/scale interaction studies

Research will be undertaken in this contract in the area of Modeling Resource and Facilities Enhancement to include computer, technical and educational support to NASA investigators to facilitate model implementation, execution and analysis of output; to provide facilities linking USRA and the NASA/EADS Computer System as well as resident work stations in ESAD; and to provide a centralized location for documentation, archival and dissemination of modeling information pertaining to NASA's program. Additional research will be undertaken in the area of Numerical Model Scale Interaction/Convective Parameterization Studies to include implementation of the comparison of cloud and rain systems and convective-scale processes between the model simulations and what was observed; and to incorporate the findings of these and related research findings in at least two refereed journal articles.
