Assessment of Fluoropolymer Production and Use With Analysis of Alternative Replacement Materials

This report focuses on fluoropolymers, which are a subgroup of the much larger class of fluorinated chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Clearly distinguishing fluoropolymers is important to understanding their distinctive chemical properties, associated risks and benefits, and roles in commerce. In this report, the factors that are considered in a lifecycle assessment (LCA) of fluoropolymers will be discussed. These include the manufacturing of fluoropolymers, their use in industry, and available replacement technologies. Emphasis is placed on fluoropolymer plastics because of their extensive use in the commerce sectors considered here, specifically aerospace, automotive, battery, building construction, chemical processing, electronics, infrastructure, semiconductor, solar panel, and wind energy industries.

Cradle-to-Gate Life Cycle Analysis Baseline for United States Coal Mining and Delivery

The goal of this study is to highlight the environmental impacts from upstream coal production to its delivery at a power plant. This study is meant to characterize different coal basins, coal types, and mine types used to produce electric power in the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) regions in the United States using a functional unit of 1 kg of coal. The boundary of this study includes underground or surface extraction, water use at the mine, ventilation, coal handling, coal cleaning, mine tailing disposal, and transportation via conveyer belt, truck, ocean vessel, barge, and train. Life Cycle Analysis of Thermoelectric Power Generation in the United States

In this article, the basics of performing a life cycle analysis of thermoelectric power generation are discussed, with three examples of life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) balances for thermoelectric power generation forms: coal, natural gas, and nuclear. The final section compares multiple electricity generation methods in the United States. Results are presented on the basis of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity delivered to the end user. Environmental life cycle results for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are presented as carbon dioxide equivalents, based on 100-year global warming potentials (GWPs) established by the 6th Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2021, commonly referred to as AR6 GWP values (IPCC, 2021). Additional details on other environmental life cycle impacts from non-GHG emissions to air, emissions to water, solid waste generation, and land use are available on the Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory’s Life Cycle Analysis website: www.netl.doe.gov/LCA.

A long-term pilot-scale algal cultivation on power plant flue gas – Cultivation stability and biomass accumulation

A long-term culture of a selected freshwater microalgal assemblage on power plant flue gas was realized using a pilot-scale photobioreactor. Different culture conditions of light cycle, harvesting amount, pH stabilization, and sulfur addition were tested during a 12-month continuous operation at a natural gas fired power plant. The results concluded that the daily harvesting amount of 60% with no light-cycle and NH 4 NO 3 as the nitrogen source and pH stabilization agent, resulted in optimal cultivation performance. Biomass concentration and biomass productivity reached 1.07 ± 0.23 g L -1 and 0.43 ± 0.14 g L -1 d -1 , respectively. During the year-long cultivation period, the algal assemblage was relatively stable with average abundances of 88 ± 4% and 12 ± 4% for algae and bacteria, respectively, and no significant differences between individual case scenarios. The stable culture fostered a stable biomass composition. Protein, carbohydrate, and lipid contents of the algal biomass were 58.60 ± 2.41%, 19.5 ± 2.44%, and 9.70 ± 1.68%, respectively.
