Magnetic states of the quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenide Ba 2 FeS 3

Quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders and chains, with the 3d iron electronic density n=6, are attracting considerable attention. Recently, a new iron chain system Ba 2 FeS 3 , also with n=6, was prepared under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Here the magnetic and electronic phase diagrams are theoretically studied for this quasi-one-dimensional compound. Based on first-principles calculations, a strongly anisotropic one-dimensional electronic band behavior near the Fermi level was observed. In addition, a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this chain was constructed. Introducing the Hubbard and Hund couplings and studying the model via the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we studied the ground-state phase diagram. A robust staggered ↑-↓-↑-↓ AFM region was unveiled in the chain direction, consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, at intermediate Hubbard U coupling strengths, this system was found to display an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP) with one localized orbital and two itinerant metallic orbitals. At very large U/W (W=bandwidth), the system displays Mott insulator characteristics, with two orbitals half-filled and one doubly occupied. Our results for high pressure Ba 2 FeS 3 provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this one-dimensional iron chalcogenide chain material.

Skyrmion control of Majorana states in planar Josephson junctions

Planar Josephson junctions provide a versatile platform, alternative to the nanowire-based geometry, for the generation of the Majorana bound states, due to the additional phase tunability of the topological superconductivity. The proximity induction of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas showed remarkable promise to manipulate topological superconductivity. Here, we consider a Josephson junction involving a skyrmion crystal and show that the chiral magnetism of the skyrmions can create and control the Majorana bound states without the requirement of an intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Interestingly, the Majorana bound states in our geometry are realized robustly at zero phase difference at the junction. The skyrmion radius, being externally tunable by a magnetic field or a magnetic anisotropy, brings a unique control feature for the Majorana bound states.

Large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in SrIrO 3 induced by magnetic proximity effect

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is an intriguing transport phenomenon occurring typically in ferromagnets as a consequence of broken time reversal symmetry and spin-orbit interaction. It can be caused by two microscopically distinct mechanisms, namely, by skew or side-jump scattering due to chiral features of the disorder scattering, or by an intrinsic contribution directly linked to the topological properties of the Bloch states. Here we show that the AHE can be artificially engineered in materials in which it is originally absent by combining the effects of symmetry breaking, spin orbit interaction and proximity-induced magnetism. In particular, we find a strikingly large AHE that emerges at the interface between a ferromagnetic manganite (La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 ) and a semimetallic iridate (SrIrO 3 ). It is intrinsic and originates in the proximity-induced magnetism present in the narrow bands of strong spin-orbit coupling material SrIrO 3 , which yields values of anomalous Hall conductivity and Hall angle as high as those observed in bulk transition-metal ferromagnets. These results demonstrate the interplay between correlated electron physics and topological phenomena at interfaces between 3d ferromagnets and strong spin-orbit coupling 5d oxides and trace an exciting path towards future topological spintronics at oxide interfaces.

Peierls transition, ferroelectricity, and spin-singlet formation in monolayer VOI 2

Using ab initio density functional theory and single-orbital Hubbard model calculations via the density matrix renormalization group method, we systematically studied the monolayer VOI 2 with a 3d 1 electronic configuration. Our phonon calculations indicate that the orthorhombic Pmm2 FE-II phase is the most likely ground state, involving a ferroelectric (FE) distortion along the a axis and V-V dimerization along the b axis. Specifically, the “pseudo Jahn-Teller” effect caused by the coupling between empty V (d xz/yz and d 3z 2 -r 2 ) and O 2p states is proposed as the mechanism that stabilizes the FE distortion from the paraelectric phase. Moreover, the half-filled metallic d xy band displays a Peierls instability along the b axis, inducing a V-V dimerization. Additionally, we found very short-range antiferromagnetic coupling along the V-V chain due to the formation of nearly decoupled spin singlets in the ground state.

Block orbital-selective Mott insulators: A spin excitation analysis

We present a comprehensive study of the spin excitations—as measured by the dynamical spin structure factor S(q,ω)—of the so-called block-magnetic state of low-dimensional orbital-selective Mott insulators. We realize this state via both a multi-orbital Hubbard model and a generalized Kondo-Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Due to various competing energy scales present in the models, the system develops periodic ferromagnetic islands of various shapes and sizes, which are antiferromagnetically coupled. The 2×2 particular case was already found experimentally in the ladder material BaFe2Se3 that becomes superconducting under pressure. Here we discuss the electronic density as well as Hubbard and Hund coupling dependence of S(q,ω) using density matrix renormalization group method. Several interesting features were identified: (1) An acoustic (dispersive spin-wave) mode develops. (2) The spin-wave bandwidth establishes a new energy scale that is strongly dependent on the size of the magnetic island and becomes abnormally small for large clusters. (3) Optical (dispersionless spin excitation) modes are present for all block states studied here. In addition, a variety of phenomenological spin Hamiltonians have been investigated but none matches entirely our results that were obtained primarily at intermediate Hubbard U strengths. Our comprehensive analysis provides theoretical guidance and motivation to crystal growers to search for appropriate candidate materials to realize the block states, and to neutron scattering experimentalists to confirm the exotic dynamical magnetic properties unveiled here, with a rich mixture of acoustic and optical features.

Planar topological Hall effect from conical spin spirals

The planar topological Hall effect (PTHE) is known to arise from in-plane skyrmion tubes with an external magnetic field applied in the plane of the charge current. In this paper, we propose that the PTHE can robustly appear also from an unexpected source, the conical spin spiral, realizable in a variety of materials. We show that for both in-plane skyrmion tubes and conical spin spirals, the PTHE is twofold symmetric with respect to the magnetic-field angle, while it is fourfold symmetric for 90°-rotated domains of conical spin spirals. We predict that the symmetry and magnetic-field response of the PTHE can distinguish between the two scenarios, unambiguously probing the nature of the antisymmetric spin-exchange interaction and the resulting magnetic texture.

Properties of La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 under extreme tensile strain

The complex phase diagram of manganites with simultaneously active spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom continues providing surprises. In a recent groundbreaking experiment, membranes of the perovskite manganite La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 (LCMO) deposited on a flexible polymer layer were strained up to 8% [S. S. Hong et al., Science 368, 71 (2020)], much more than achieved by regular strain induced by a rigid substrate. By increasing this strain, a metal-insulator transition was reported. Here we reproduce the results of the experiments using Monte Carlo simulations of the two-orbital double-exchange model including Jahn-Teller distortions at hole density x=1/3. The full phase diagram with varying temperature and Jahn-Teller coupling λ is presented. When the bandwidth W of mobile electrons is reduced, thus when the effective Jahn-Teller coupling λ/W is increased, a metal-insulator transition is found in our simulations, between a ferromagnetic metallic state with uniform charge distribution and an insulator with diagonal charge stripes that retains its ferromagnetic character. In between the hole-rich diagonals, staggered orbital order occurs. We also report resistivity and magnetization measurements alongside with spin correlations and charge structure factors. Our overall conclusions are in agreement with the recent experimental and density functional theory results by Hong et al., and we confirm much earlier ground state predictions of striped ferromagnetic order using energy optimization techniques by T. Hotta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4922 (2001)]. The experimental observation of one of the states predicted by theory suggests that diagonal stripes could be achieved at other hole densities as well, such as x=1/4, if LCMO membranes with that hole doping were subject to similar strains.

Flat bands and ferrimagnetic order in electronically correlated dice-lattice ribbons

In this work, we study ribbons of the dice two-dimensional lattice (that we call “dice ladders”) known to have nontrivial topological properties, such as Chern numbers 2. Our main results are two fold. (1) Analyzing the tight-binding model in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an external magnetic field, we observed that dice ladders qualitatively display properties similar to their two-dimensional counterpart all the way to the limit of only two legs in the short direction. This includes flat bands near the Fermi level, edge currents and edge charge localization near zero energy when open boundary conditions are used, two chiral edge modes, and a nonzero Hall conductance. (2) We studied the effect of Hubbard correlation U in the two-leg dice ladder using Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group techniques. We show that by increasing U the flat bands split without the need of introducing external fields. Moreover, robust ferrimagnetic order develops. Overall, our work establishes dice ladders as a promising playground to study the combined effect of topology and correlation effects, one of the frontiers in quantum materials.

BCS-BEC crossover in a (t 2g ) 4 excitonic magnet

The condensation of spin-orbit-induced excitons in t 2 g 4 electronic systems is attracting considerable attention. At large Hubbard U , antiferromagnetism was proposed to emerge from the Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of triplons ( J eff = 1 ). Furthermore, we show that even at intermediate U regimes, the spin-orbit exciton condensation is possible leading also to staggered magnetic order. The canonical electron-hole excitations (excitons) transform into local triplon excitations at large U , and this BEC strong coupling regime is smoothly connected to the intermediate U excitonic insulator region. We solved the degenerate three-orbital Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling ( λ ) in one dimension using the density matrix renormalization group, while in two dimensions we use the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA). Employing these techniques, we provide the full λ versus U phase diagrams for both one- and two-dimensional lattices. Our main result is that at intermediate Hubbard U , increasing λ at fixed U the system transitions from an incommensurate spin-density-wave metal to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excitonic insulator, with coherence length r coh of O ( a ) and O ( 10 a ) in 1 d and 2 d , respectively, with a being the lattice spacing. Further increasing λ , the system eventually crosses over to the BEC limit (with r coh ≪ a ).
