Optimization and performance calculation of dual-rotation propellers

An analysis is given which enables the design of dual-rotation propellers. It relies on the use of a new tip loss factor deduced from T. Theodorsen's measurements coupled with the general methodology of C. N. H. Lock. In addition, it includes the effect of drag in optimizing. Some values for the tip loss factor are calculated for one advance ratio.

Wind-tunnel tests and computer simulations of buoyant wing-tip vortices

It is demonstrated that wing-tip vortices with buoyant cores can be made in a wind tunnel. Wing-tip vortices generated by an aircraft often become buoyant, because of heating effects due to the jet exhaust or in connection with a descending motion in a stable atmosphere. A description of wind-tunnel studies is given, taking into account the experimental conditions, the transition to turbulence, and the drift of the buoyant vortex. A computer simulation of wing-tip vortices is also discussed.

Ring structure of a neutral gas cloud studied in a one-dimensional expansion into space

A one dimensional treatment of the expansion of a gas cloud of uncharged particles into vacuum is discussed. It is determined that the whole cloud does not change from continuum to free molecular flow at the same time. Some regions of the cloud make the transition sooner than others. An explanation of the ring structure observed during barium cloud experiments is presented using this conclusion. An analysis of the velocity distributions for the two kinds of flow yields a velocity distribution for the whole cloud that exhibits ring structure.
