Antennas for spacecraft synthetic aperture radars

Future SAR missions will require light weight, multifrequency, multipolarization spacecraft antennas. NASA has conducted an investigation of possible antenna technologies, and has identified two promising technologies: interleaved open-ended waveguide antennas constructed from metallized graphite epoxy and distributed microstrip antennas. The investigation and candidate technologies are described in this paper.

Dual-band microstrip antennas with monolithic reactive loading

The design and experimental measurement of a dual-band, monolithic microstrip antenna is presented. The structure utilises a short-circuited length of microstrip transmission line to provide reactive loading and, thereby, retains the low-profile characteristic of a normal microstrip patch radiator.

Dual-band reactively loaded microstrip antenna

A previously derived theory is applied to a microstrip antenna with a reactive load to produce a dual-band radiator. A model consisting of a rectangular patch radiator loaded with a variable length short-circuited coaxial stub was investigated experimentally. Comparisons of theoretical predictions and experimental data are made for the impedance and resonant frequencies as a function of the position of the load, the length of the stub, and the characteristic impedance of the stub.

Use of LANDSAT data to define soil boundaries in Carroll County, Missouri

Bands 4, 5 and 7 false color composite photographs were prepared using data from LANDSAT scenes acquired during April 1977 and April 1981 on computer compatible tapes, and these color composites were compared with band 7 black and white photographs prepared for the entire county. Delineations of soil boundaries at the soil association level were achieved using LANDSAT spectral reflectance data and slope maps for a portion of Carroll County, Missouri. Forty two spectral reflectance classes from April 1977 LANDSAT data were overlaid on digitized slope maps of nine USGS 7.5 minute series topographic quadrangle slope maps to achieve boundary delineations of the soil associations.
