Discrete element modeling of irregular-shaped soft pine particle flow in an FT4 powder rheometer

Pine residues are a commonly used biomass feedstock that consists of different anatomical fractions, each with distinct particle characteristics. Here, in this work, an experiment-informed discrete element model is developed to investigate the flowability of pine residues in an FT4 rheometer. Multi-sphere particles with distinct particle attributes are created to model each anatomical fraction type. A systematic analysis of specimens with varying particle characteristics (e.g., anatomical fraction type, particle shape, and size) is conducted to elucidate the relationship between particle attributes and flowability. The results show that stems recorded the highest axial force and torque and, correspondingly, the highest flow energy, which is attributed to their high stiffness and interlocking effect. Increasing their percentage in the mixture increases the flow energy while increasing needles tends to decrease flow energy. Knowledge gained in this study on the flow of anatomical fractions is important for the efficient and robust processing of pine residues.

Solar Automated Permit Processing Software for Distributed PV (Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-19-00825)

NREL and its project partners built and commercialized the novel Solar Automated Permitting Processing Plus (SolarAPP+) software platform that delivers instant residential rooftop solar permits. The tool provides installers with a standard portal for entering permit information for residential solar systems across all Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) using SolarAPP+, thereby providing a streamlined plan review form, transparency into permitting timelines, and required specifications. The project has proven to reduce permitting timelines from as many as 20 business days to zero, delivering solar projects faster in the four participating AHJs using the platform. Streamlining permitting timelines, all else equal, results in consumers installing their systems and reducing their electricity bills faster. The continued expansion of SolarAPP+ features and adoption nationwide will expand the benefits of the SolarAPP+ beyond the current user base.

Effects of growth substrate on the nucleation of monolayer MoTe 2

The discovery and characterization of two-dimensional (2D) materials beyond graphene has increased dramatically over the past decade with increasingly fine control over the growth dynamics of these materials. MoTe 2 represents a model material for studying phase change properties of 2D materials due to small energy differences between its 2H semiconducting phase and 1T' semimetallic phase. Although some substrates are demonstrated to be better than others for the wafer-scale growth of high quality MoTe 2 films, substrate effects on the nucleation and growth of MoTe 2 are still not well understood. Here, we grow monolayer MoTe 2 by converting MoO x thin films deposited on three different substrates: sapphire Al 2 O 3 (0001), amorphous SiO 2 , and amorphous AlO x , and examine the early stages of the conversion reaction to elucidate the substrate effects on the nucleation of MoTe 2 . We observe that the chemical composition of the substrate is more important than the surface topography and crystallinity of the substrate, with high quality monolayer 2H MoTe 2 formed on both Al 2 O 3 (0001) and AlO x in contrast to mixed phase 2H/1T' MoTe 2 formed on SiO 2 , as determined by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy.
