Generation of Neutron Airy Beams

The Airy wave packet is a solution to the potential-free Schrödinger equation that exhibits remarkable properties such as self-acceleration, nondiffraction, and self-healing. Although Airy beams are now routinely realized with electromagnetic waves and electrons, the implementation with neutrons has remained elusive due to small transverse coherence lengths, low fluence rates, and the absence of neutron lenses. In this Letter, we overcome these challenges through a holographic approach and present the first experimental demonstration of neutron Airy beams. The presented techniques pave the way for fundamental physics studies with Airy beams of nonelementary particles, the development of novel neutron optics components, and the realization of neutron Airy-vortex beams. Improved limits on n → n ' transformation from the Spallation Neutron Source

Conversions between neutrons n and dark matter candidate sterile neutrons n' have been proposed as a mechanism for baryon number $\mathscr{B}$ violation. In the case that there is a small mass difference Δ⁢m between the n and the n' states, oscillations can be induced by compensating for Δ⁢m with a magnetic field. A search for such neutron oscillations was performed at the Spallation Neutron Source by looking for anomalous neutron transmission through a strongly absorbing cadmium wafer inside of a 6.6 T magnet. The approach described here saw no regenerated neutrons above background, which provides an improved limit for neutron–sterile neutron transformations for a range of Δ⁢m between 0.1 and 1000 neV.

Three-dimensional structure of hybrid magnetic skyrmions determined by neutron scattering

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected chiral spin textures which present opportunities for next-generation magnetic data storage and logic information technologies. The topology of these structures originates in the geometric configuration of the magnetic spins, more generally described as the structure. While the skyrmion structure is most often depicted using a two-dimensional projection of the three-dimensional (3D) structure, recent works have emphasized the role of all three dimensions in determining the topology and their response to external stimuli. Here, grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering and polarized neutron reflectometry are used to determine the 3D structure of hybrid skyrmions. The structure of the hybrid skyrmions, which includes a combination of Néel-like and Bloch-like components along their length, is expected to significantly contribute to their notable stability, which includes ambient conditions. To interpret the neutron scattering data, micromagnetic simulations of the hybrid skyrmions were performed, and the corresponding diffraction patterns were determined using a Born approximation transformation. The converged magnetic profile reveals the magnetic structure along with the skyrmion depth profile, including the thickness of the Bloch and Néel segments and the diameter of the core.

Assessing the influence of microstructure on uranium hydride size distributions via small angle neutron scattering

Here, the effect of microstructure on the internal hydriding behavior of both cast (1 mm grain size) and rolled (25 μm grain size) uranium containing hydrogen concentrations between 0 and 1.8 wppm were evaluated via small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Increasing hydrogen content up to 1.8 wppm in the cast uranium only weakly affected the average uranium hydride (UH 3 ) precipitate size, calculated from the SANS data. Conversely, the UH 3 phase fraction was found to strongly depend on the hydrogen content in the same cast samples. A substantially reduced UH 3 particle size distribution was observed in the rolled uranium relative to cast uranium containing the same nominal hydrogen content. It is hypothesized that the suppression of UH 3 formation in the rolled uranium is driven by increased hydrogen trapping at grain boundaries, and theoretical calculations that account for trap density, potency, and hydrogen diffusion kinetics support this hypothesis.

Experimental realization of neutron helical waves

Methods of preparation and analysis of structured waves of light, electrons, and atoms have been advancing rapidly. Despite the proven power of neutrons for material characterization and studies of fundamental physics, neutron science has not been able to fully integrate these techniques because of small transverse coherence lengths, the relatively poor resolution of spatial detectors, and low fluence rates. Here, we demonstrate methods that are practical with the existing technologies and show the experimental achievement of neutron helical wavefronts that carry well-defined orbital angular momentum values. We discuss possible applications and extensions to spin-orbit correlations and material characterization techniques.

Effects of magnetic and non-magnetic doping on the vortex lattice in MgB 2

Using small-angle neutron scattering we have studied the vortex lattice in superconducting MgB 2 , doped with either manganese or carbon to achieve a similar suppression of the critical temperature. Measurements were performed with the magnetic field applied along the c-axis, where the vortex lattice in pure MgB 2 is known to undergo a field-and temperature-driven 30° rotation transition. For Mn-doping, the vortex lat- tice phase diagram remains qualitatively similar to that of pure MgB 2 , indicating only a modest effect on the vortex-vortex interaction. In contrast, the vortex lattice rotation transition is completely suppressed in the C-doped case, likely due to a change in the electronic structure which affects the two-band/two-gap nature of superconductivity in MgB 2 . The vortex lattice longitudinal correlation length shows the opposite behavior, remaining roughly unchanged between pure and C-doped MgB 2 while it is significantly reduced in the Mn-doped case. However, the extensive vortex lattice metastability and related activated behavior, observed in conjunction with the vortex lattice transition in pure MgB 2 , is also seen in the Mn doped sample. This shows that the vortex lattice disordering is not associated with a substantially increased vortex pinning.

Squeezing the periodicity of Néel-type magnetic modulations by enhanced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of 4d electrons

In polar magnets, such as GaV 4 S 8 , GaV 4 Se 8 and VOSe 2 O 5 , modulated magnetic phases namely the cycloidal and the Néel-type skyrmion lattice states were identified over extended temperature ranges, even down to zero Kelvin. Our combined small-angle neutron scattering and magnetization study shows the robustness of the Néel-type magnetic modulations also against magnetic fields up to 2 T in the polar GaMo 4 S 8 . In addition to the large upper critical field, enhanced spin-orbit coupling stabilize cycloidal, Néel skyrmion lattice phases with sub-10 nm periodicity and a peculiar distribution of the magnetic modulation vectors. Moreover, we detected an additional single-q state not observed in any other polar magnets. Thus, our work demonstrates that non-centrosymmetric magnets with 4d and 5d electron systems may give rise to various highly compressed modulated states.

Magnetic polarons and spin-glass behavior in insulating La 1-x Sr x CoO 3 (x = 0.125 and 0.15)

The evolution of magnetic polarons in Sr doped La Co O 3 ( La 1 - x Sr x Co O 3 ) single crystal and polycrystalline samples are investigated by employing dc and ac magnetic measurement and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) techniques. The effect of magnetic field and temperature on magnetic polarons is experimentally studied for La 0.875 Sr 0.125 Co O 3 and La 0.85 Sr 0.15 Co O 3 compounds that belong to the spin glass insulating regime of the broader compositional phase diagram of this system. Langevin analyses of the isothermal magnetization curves in the notional paramagnetic regime prove the existence of magnetic polarons with large moments. The dc field superimposed ac susceptibility data and the analysis of the glassy dynamics prove that the size of polarons in 15% Sr doped crystal increase as the field is increased while the field effect is not visible in the 12.5% Sr doped crystal. A polycrystalline sample of La 0.85 Sr 0.15 Co O 3 is analyzed by SANS experiments, which confirm nonzero correlation length at temperatures far above the macroscopic ordering temperature and hence the presence of magnetic polarons.
