Solwnd: A 3D Compressible MHD Code for Solar Wind Studies. Version 1.0: Cartesian Coordinates

Solwnd 1.0 is a three-dimensional compressible MHD code written in Fortran for studying the solar wind. Time-dependent boundary conditions are available. The computational algorithm is based on Flux Corrected Transport and the code is based on the existing code of Zalesak and Spicer. The flow considered is that of shear flow with incoming flow that perturbs this base flow. Several test cases corresponding to pressure balanced magnetic structures with velocity shear flow and various inflows including Alfven waves are presented. Version 1.0 of solwnd considers a rectangular Cartesian geometry. Future versions of solwnd will consider a spherical geometry. Some discussions of this issue is presented.

Low-dimensional description of the dynamics in separated flow past thick airfoils

Results are presented for the numerical simulation of unsteady viscous incompressible flow past thick airfoils. Specifically, flow past a NACA 4424 at an angle of attack of 2.5 deg and Reynolds numbers in the range of 1700-4000 has been simulated using the spectral element method. At these conditions the flow is separatedd and an unsteady wake is formed. Application of the method of empirical eigenfunction reveals the structure of the most energetic components of the flow. These are found to occur in pairs that, through phase exchange, are responsible for the vortex shedding. A set of ordinary differential equations is obtained for the amplitudes of these eigenfunctions by a Galerkin projection of the Navier-Stokes equations. The solutions of the model system are compared with the full simulation. The work is of relevance to the transition process and observed routes to chaos in airfoil wakes.

Multifractal spectra in shear flows

Numerical simulations of three-dimensional homogeneous shear flow and fully developed channel flow, are used to calculate the associated multifractal spectra of the energy dissipation field. Only weak parameterization of the results with the nondimensional shear is found, and this only if the flow has reached its asymptotic development state. Multifractal spectra of these flows coincide with those from experiments only at the range alpha less than 1.
