All-Metal Dual Band Circular Polarized UHF Patch Antenna

An all-metal circularly polarized UHF antenna element is presented. The patch antenna gives a wideband impedance and axial ratio bandwidth of 24% over the 0.3-0.38 GHz frequency band with 90% efficiency. The main advantage is the use of a single feed point to generate circular polarization (CP). The antenna can be used to set up a dual-band (0.3-0.32 GHz and 0.36-0.38 GHz) communication link, with an axial ratio better than 3 dB and a realized CP gain better than 8 dBiC and 10 dBiC, respectively. The interaction between the cavity walls and the patch element, results in near-field coupling and improves the impedance bandwidth as well as the axial ratio bandwidth of the antenna. Being a high gain, high aperture efficiency, low profile, light weight, and single feed point radiating element, this single patch antenna is an excellent candidate for future antenna array.

Permittivity Measurement System Using Stripline Method for the Europa Clipper Mission

High radiation Jovian environment can deposit electrons in highly resistive dielectric materials, which could result in internal electrostatic discharge (IESD) causing damage to sensitive electronics such as the radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-Surface (REASON) instrument on NASA’s Europa Clipper mission. Special dielectric materials like static dissipative Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) ESD are under consideration for the Europa Clipper mission. PEEK loaded with carbon nanofibers improves the ESD performance for this material but the RF characteristics are unknown. We have developed a method to characterize the dielectric constant of a material as a function of frequency and temperature down to 30K. We present the measurement results of four samples of ESD. The measured data shows the permittivity of TECAPEEK ESD 11 is in the range of 7 to 10 at HF and in the range of 6.8 to 8.3 for VHF frequencies. The change in permittivity of ESD 11 down to 30 K is less than 7% at HF and less than 3% at VHF frequency. The sample to sample variability can be attributed to the inhomogeneity of the material.

Deployable CubeSat Antennas for Deep Space and Earth Science Missions

New antenna technologies have unlocked a new class of missions using CubeSats for Earth Science or Deep Space operations. This class of small satellites have historically been mostly used as teaching tools allowing students to design and test small satellites and develop space experiments. With the rise of new game-changing antenna technologies, overcoming their small size and need for high gain, they can now be used beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Over the past 5 years, technologists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have designed, tested and successfully flown these innovative Smallsat antennas, enabling new telecommunication and science achievements.

VHF antenna far-field pattern measurements at 60 MHz using an outdoor antenna range for Europa Clipper mission

Improvements to measurements of a VHF folded dipole operating at 55-65 MHz to be used as part of a radar for a mission to one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa, are presented. Previous measurements using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) are improved upon by reducing systematic errors and more accurately tracking distances within the measurement system on an outdoor measurement range at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Details of the measurement system setup are presented along with a brief discussion of error sources. Comparing previously collected measurement data with the new measurements reveal an improvement of approximately 0.4 dB in accuracy with an improvement in over 1 dB for error budgets.

Far-Field Pattern Measurement and Simulation of VHF Antenna at 60 MHz for Europa Clipper Mission

This paper presents measurements and simulations of a linearly polarized VHF folded dipole operating at 60 MHz for NASA’s upcoming Europa Clipper mission. The spacecraft contains a ground penetrating radar, consisting of an array of four VHF antennas, that will characterize the surface of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa. Measured far-field radiation patterns and reflection coefficients above a 50×80m perfect ground plane are compared to predicted results using commercial software. Normalized Far-Field radiation pattern cuts are measured utilizing a biconical antenna and receiver mounted on a flying drone. Simulations of the radiation pattern show that the number of lobes increases with the distance of the antenna from the ground due to the ground-bounce phenomenon. In addition, the measured and simulated reflection coefficients stay unchanged for height above 2 meters, which matches the predicted calculation of the reactive-near field region of this antenna. However, the antenna electrical parameters are optimized for use on the spacecraft and become detuned in the presence of a ground plane. Simulated and measured return loss discrepancy less than 0.5 dB is presented. Radiation pattern comparisons show similar agreement when taking into account the effect of far-field measurement uncertainties.

340 Ghz Multipixel Transceiver

A multi-pixel terahertz transceiver is constructed using a stack of semiconductor layers that communicate using vias defined within the semiconductor layers. By using a stack of semiconductor layers, the various electrical functions of each layer can be tested easily without having to assemble the entire transceiver. In addition, the design allows the production of a transceiver having pixels set 10 mm apart.

Using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and Helium Aerostats to Perform Far-Field Radiation Pattern Measurements of High-Frequency Antennas

A new methodology is described for performing near-free space far-field radiation pattern measurements of high frequency (HF) antennas utilizing small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and helium-filled aerostat balloons for the radar antennas onboard NASA’s planned Europa Clipper mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa. Adapted from land-based measurements, this test methodology involves hoisting the antenna to be tested above the earth to minimize ground interactions while flying a sUAS with onboard measurement package to map the far field radiation pattern. Initial results producing radiation pattern maps are promising with work remaining to fully adapt fixed VHF measurements to the dynamic HF antenna test setup.

Dielectric Waveguides Splitter and Hybrid/Isolator for Bidirectional Link

A system, method, device, and apparatus provide a dielectric waveguide splitter/bi-directional link. A dielectric substrate fabricated into a first Y-junction waveguide with a first port splitting into a first branch leading to a second port and a second branch leading to a third port. An angle between the first branch and the second branch is below ninety degrees (90.degree.). The dielectric waveguide splitter enables millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission between the first port and the second port while reducing feedback of the mmWave between the second and third port. Two Y-junction waveguides may be fabricated back-to-back to provide simultaneous bidirectional mmWave transmission at a single frequency.
