Superconductivity in WBe 2

WBe 2 , which occurs in space group 194, with hexagonal symmetry P6 3 /mmc, is prepared by arc-melting at temperatures above 2200 C, where Be vapor loss is significant. This study is motivated by recent work on MoB 2 and WB 2 , both superconductors (T c =32 and 17 K respectively) under high (∼70 GPa) pressure. In order to avoid the known Be-rich superconducting phases (WBe 13 and WBe 22 ) in the complex phase diagram, both known to be superconducting at 4.1 K, the sample was prepared with a slight (∼5 %) excess of W. The resultant sample, prepared using high purity (99.999 %) Be, is essentially single phase WBe 2 , with some spread in its superconducting properties due to the known homogeneity range. (WBe 2 forms in space group 194 between approximately W 1.02 Be 1.98 and W 0.88 Be 2.12 .) Characterization was carried out with x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, ρ, in zero and applied magnetic fields, and specific heat. The resistivity in zero and applied fields and specific heat data indicate that our sample of WBe 2 is a bulk superconductor at ambient pressure with a T c onset in ρ at 1.05 K, and T c (ρ→0) at ∼0.86 K. Furthermore, there is no signature of superconductivity in ρ at 4.1 K, indicating successful avoidance of WBe 13 and WBe 22 . The ρ data in field indicate an upper critical field of approximately 400 gauss.

Charge correlations suppress unconventional pairing in the Holstein model

In a recent work by Schrodi et al. [Phys. Rev. B. 104, L140506 (2021)], the authors find an unconventional superconducting state with a sign-changing order parameter using the Migdal-Eliashberg theory, including the first vertex correction. This unconventional solution arises despite using an isotropic bare electron-phonon coupling in the Hamiltonian. We examine this claim using hybrid quantum Monte Carlo for a single-band Holstein model with a cuprate-like noninteracting band structure and identical parameters to Schrodi et al.. Our Monte Carlo results for these parameters suggest that unconventional pairing correlations do not exceed their noninteracting values at any carrier concentration we have checked. Instead, strong charge-density-wave correlations persist at the lowest accessible temperatures for dilute and nearly half-filled bands. As a result, we present arguments for how vertex-corrected Migdal-Eliashberg calculation schemes can lead to uncontrolled results in the presence of Fermi surface nesting.

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB 2 stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB 2 exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature T c as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m structure to an MgB 2 -like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high T c values among diborides are not restricted to MgB 2 as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high T c values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB 2 structure. In this paper, we show that density functional theory calculations indicate that phonon free energy stabilizes the P6/mmm structure over the $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m at high temperatures across the Nb 1–x ⁢Mo x B 2 series. X-ray diffraction confirms that the synthesized Nb-substituted MoB 2 adopts the MgB 2 crystal structure. Finally, high magnetic field electrical resistivity measurements and specific heat measurements demonstrate that Nb x ⁢Mo 1–x⁢ B 2 exhibits superconductivity with T c as high as 8 K and critical fields approaching 6 T.

Enhancing T c in a composite superconductor/metal bilayer system: A dynamical cluster approximation study

It has been proposed that the superconducting transition temperature T c of an unconventional superconductor with a large pairing scale but strong phase fluctuations can be enhanced by coupling it to a metal. However, the general efficacy of this approach across different parameter regimes remains an open question. Using the dynamical cluster approximation, we study this question in a system composed of an attractive Hubbard layer in the intermediate coupling regime, where the magnitude of the attractive Coulomb interaction |U| is slightly larger than the bandwidth W, hybridized with a noninteracting metallic layer. We find that while the superconducting transition becomes more mean-field-like with increasing interlayer hopping, the superconducting transition temperature T c exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the strength of the hybridization t ⊥ . Furthermore, this behavior arises from a reduction of the effective pairing interaction in the correlated layer that outcompetes the growth in the intrinsic pair-field susceptibility induced by the coupling to the metallic layer. We find that the largest T c inferred here for the composite system is comparable to the maximum value currently estimated for the isolated negative-U Hubbard model.

Superconductivity, charge density waves, and bipolarons in the Holstein model

The electron-phonon ( e-ph ) interaction remains of great interest in condensed matter physics and plays a vital role in realizing superconductors, charge density waves (CDW), and polarons. We study the two-dimensional Holstein model for e-ph coupling using determinant quantum Monte Carlo across a wide range of its phase diagram as a function of temperature, electron density, dimensionless e-ph coupling strength, and the adiabatic ratio of the phonon frequency to the Fermi energy. We describe the behavior of the CDW correlations, the competition between superconducting and CDW orders and polaron formation, the optimal conditions for superconductivity, and the transition from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime. Superconductivity is optimized at intermediate e-ph coupling strength and intermediate electron density, and the superconducting correlations increase monotonically with phonon frequency. The global maximum for superconductivity in the Holstein model occurs at large phonon frequency, the limit where an attractive Hubbard model effectively describes the physics.

Relative importance of nonlinear electron-phonon coupling and vertex corrections in the Holstein model

Determining the range of validity of Migdal’s approximation for electron-phonon (e-ph) coupled systems is a long-standing problem. Many attempts to answer this question employ the Holstein Hamiltonian, where the electron density couples linearly to local lattice displacements. When these displacements are large, however, nonlinear corrections to the interaction must also be included, which can significantly alter the physical picture obtained from this model. Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo and the self-consistent Migdal approximation, we compared superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations in the Holstein model with and without second-order nonlinear interactions. We find a disagreement between the two cases, even for relatively small values of the e-ph coupling strength, and, importantly, that this can occur in the same parameter regions where Migdal’s approximation holds. Our results demonstrate that questions regarding the validity of Migdal’s approximation go hand in hand with questions of the validity of a linear e-ph interaction.
