Pseudo noise code and data transmission method and apparatus

Pseudo noise ranging codes, having a predetermined chipping rate, and a pair of binary data sources, each having a bit rate no greater than one tenth the chipping rate, quadriphase, digitally modulate a suppressed carrier wave having a first frequency are examined. Two additional binary data sources, each having a bit rate that is not restricted by the chipping rate of the first carrier, quadriphase, digitally modulate a suppressed carrier wave having a second frequency. The first and second frequencies are only slightly displaced so that there is overlap in the frequency bands which modulate the two carriers. The two suppressed carrier waves are linearly combined and transmitted from a first station to a second station so that the amplitude of the transmitted first wave is controlled so as not to degrade the detectability of the second wave at the second station.

PN ranging/telemetry transmission

System can transmit range-indicating pseudonoise (PN) codes and simultaneously transmit auxiliary information as binary data at a rate at least on order of pseudonoise chipping rate. PN code is modulated by data stream with relatively low bit rate. Data stream with high bit rate can be transmitted in same frequency band as PN ranging code.

Switchable Beamwidth Monopulse Method and System

A switchable beamwidth monopulse method and system are described. An antenna comprising a curved reflector and a first set of monopulse feeds positioned in the effective region of the airy disc of the antenna includes a second set of monopulse feeds. The second set of monopulse feeds is positioned outside the airy disc in the region of first bright airy ring. In narrow beamwidth monopulse operation, monopulse sum and difference channel patterns are obtained from the first set of feeds within the airy disc. In wide beamwidth monopulse operation, the difference channel pattern is obtained from the second set of feeds in the airy ring; the sum channel pattern is obtained by attenuation and phase shifting the sum channel signal obtained from the first set of feeds, and adding the resultant to the sum channel signal obtained from the second set of feeds. In a simplified form of the invention, the difference channel patterns for both narrow and wide beamwidth mode operation are obtained from the second set of feeds, while the sum channel patterns are obtained as described above.

Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System /TDRSS/ telecommunication services

The TDRSS and tracking services define the telecommunication performance of the TDRSS between the RF interface with user spacecraft and the data interface with NASCOM at the ground terminal. Attention is given to system constraints, forward link services, multiple-access signal design parameters, S-band single access signal design parameters, multiple-access return link services, and single-access return link services.

Signal-to-noise ratio determination circuit

A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) determination of an input is described, having signal components within a given frequency range and noise components, without actual measurement of the noise components. Bandpass limiter having a constant signal plus noise output level is connected to the output of the first filter, the signal-to-noise ratio of the input to the bandpass limiter being linearly related to the dbm level of signal components at the output. Calibration is connected to the bandpass limiter and is responsive to the signal components at the output to derive the SNR of the input to the determination circuit. The SNR determination circuit is disclosed for use in a diversity receiver having a plurality of input channels.

Ku-band high gain antenna

An exposed four element array of 12.8 m diameter elements mounted on a common pedestal is the recommended ground antenna configuration in support of the 2 GHz bandwidth Ku-band downlink from tdr satellites. The array provides three channel phase monopulse tracking capability with only listening feeds in each element. The array is as cost effective as a single aperture antenna and offers significant advantages in tracking and reliability.

Signal coherence studies in multiaperture arrays

A two-element array was constructed to measure the gain improvement that can be realized while tracking spacecraft. Measurements were made at VHF and S band. An automatically controlled time delay correction system was developed and tested for this program.

Space base antenna study

The field of view required of the space base antenna is defined for both the tracking and data relay satellite link and detached module links. The gain requirements are established and the feasibility of alternative antenna configurations using phased arrays and reflectors are considered. One recommended and one alternative configuration are presented for each of the required links.
