Charge dynamics of a noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal

The interplay of topology with magnetism in Weyl semimetals recently arose to a vanguard topic, because of novel physical scenarios with anomalous transport properties. Here, we address the charge dynamics of the noncentrosymmetric and ferromagnetic (T C ~ 15 K) PrAlGe material and discover that it harbours electronic correlations, which are reflected in a sizeable reduction of the Fermi velocity with respect to the bare band value at low temperatures (T). At T < T C , the optical response registers a band reconstruction, which additionally causes a reshuffling of spectral weight, pertinent to the electronic environment of the type-I Weyl fermions and tracing the remarkable anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC). With the support of first-principles calculations, we provide evidence for the intimate relationship between a topological resonance of the absorption spectrum and the progressively enhanced occupation of non-trivial states with large Berry curvatures, a requirement for AHC.

Evidence for correlation effects in noncentrosymmetric type-II Weyl semimetals

Topological fermions have mainly been addressed in the limit of weakly correlated systems, while the realization of Kondo-like physics arising from Dirac-Weyl fermions and implying strong correlations is rare. The noncentrosymmetric Weyl fermion R AlGe compounds (with R = La and Ce) provide a promising playground for revealing the impact of electronic correlations driven by f-electron states on Weyl fermions. Here, we tackle their charge dynamics as a function of temperature. Besides spotting typical optical signatures of a type-II Weyl semimetal in both materials, we discover that electronic correlations at low temperatures renormalize the nontrivial bands hosting the Weyl nodes and lead to a reduction of the Fermi velocity as well as an enhancement of the charge carriers effective mass in CeAlGe with respect to LaAlGe, both being a fingerprint of a so-called Weyl-Kondo system.

Ingredients for enhanced thermoelectric power at cryotemperatures in the correlated semiconductor CoSbS revealed by its optical response

The semiconducting CoSbS is well-known for its thermoelectric performance at high-temperatures but it is also of interest because of its colossal low-temperature thermopower. Here, we address the temperature dependence of its optical response over a broad spectral range, from which we reveal several ingredients determining the thermoelectric properties at cryo-temperatures. Furthermore, we discover co- herent phonon modes and with the additional support of scanning transmission electron microscopy investigations we provide evidences for in-gap impurity states driving the formation of correlated electrons in the valence band. Their implications, with respect to the high thermoelectric power at low temperatures, are discussed within the framework of the phonon-drag transport of low-mobility heavy quasiparticles.

Spin-Canting-Induced Band Reconstruction in the Dirac Material Ca 1 – x Na x MnBi 2

The ternary A MnBi 2 ( A is alkaline as well as rare-earth atom) materials provide an arena for investigating the interplay between low-dimensional magnetism of the antiferromagnetic MnBi layers and the electronic states in the intercalated Bi layers, which harbor relativistic fermions. We report on a comprehensive study of the optical properties and magnetic torque response of Ca 1–x Na x MnBi 2 . Our findings give evidence for a spin canting occurring at T s ~50–100 K. Thus, with the support of first-principles calculations we establish a direct link between the spin canting and the reconstruction of the electronic band structure, having immediate implications for the spectral weight reshuffling in the optical response, signaling a partial gapping of the Fermi surface, and the dc transport properties below T s .

Anisotropic Superconducting Gap in Optimally Doped Iron–Based Material

In this work we offer a comprehensive optical investigation of the optimally hole-doped Ba 0.6 K 0.4 Fe 2 As 2 over a broad spectral range, as a function of temperature and of tunable applied stress, which acts as an external symmetry breaking field. We show that there is a large electronic nematicity at optimal doping which extends right under the superconducting dome and implies an anisotropy of the superconducting energy gaps.
