Structure and magnetic properties of Ba 9 ⁢V 3 ⁢Te 15 with ferromagnetic spin chains

Here we report a ferromagnetic compound Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin chains. It was synthesized at high-temperature and high-pressure conditions and systematically investigated via structural, transport, magnetic and heat capacity measurements. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 mainly consists of trimerized face-sharing V⁢Te6 octahedral chains running along the 𝑐 axis, which are separated by a distance of 10.184⁢(8)⁢Å, thus demonstrating a strong 1D structural character. Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 is a semiconductor with a band gap ∼128meV and undergoes a ferromagnetic transition with 𝑇C∼3.6K. Far above 𝑇C, the short-range spin orders due to the intrachain spin coupling have developed, which leads to a negative magnetoresistance effect, the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law and 𝑇1/2 dependence of magnetic heat capacity. Our results reveal that Ba9⁢V3⁢Te15 provides a good opportunity to study the intrinsic properties of a system with quasi-1D ferromagnetic spin chains.

Neutrons and Complementary Techniques for Quantum Materials

The virtual workshop “Neutrons and Complementary Techniques for Quantum Materials” was held September 6-8, 2022. As the investigation of quantum materials progresses, researchers can no longer deal with the bulk properties and surface states separately. Many open questions require the combination of complementary methods sensitive to different degrees of freedom to provide a more comprehensive view. This workshop intends to create a bridge for the science community focusing on different techniques to educate each other so we will gain a better understanding of the strength, weakness/limits, the most recent new developments, and future directions for each technique. Through this workshop we intended to raise the awareness of developments in techniques complimentary to neutron scattering, thereby maximizing the impact of our work and strengthening collaborations across experimental techniques in the research of quantum materials.

Electronic and structural properties of RbCe X 2 ( X 2 : O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 )

We report triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCeX 2 compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce 3+ ions, upon varying their anion character (X 2 =O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 ). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO 2 , that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO 2 . Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and ab initio calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the J=5/2 multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the J=5/2 manifold, we observe one extra local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce3 + sites.

Effect of iron vacancies on magnetic order and spin dynamics of the spin ladder BaFe 2-δ S 1.5 Se 1.5</sub

Quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenides possess various magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion, electronic correlations, and presence of defects. Here we present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the spin ladder compound BaFe 2-δ S 1.5 Se 1.5 with ~6% iron vacancies. The data reveal that long-range magnetic order is absent, while the characteristic magnetic excitations that correspond to both the stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations are observed. First-principles calculations support the existence of both stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic short-range orders in the experimental sample. The disappearance of long-range magnetic order may be due to the competition between these two magnetic orders, which is greatly enhanced for a certain concentration of iron vacancies, which we calculate to be about 6%, consistent with the measured iron vacancy concentration. Our results highlight how iron vacancies in the iron-based spin ladder system strongly influence the magnetic ground state.

Spiral Spin Liquid on a Honeycomb Lattice

Spiral spin liquids are correlated paramagnetic states with degenerate propagation vectors forming a continuous ring or surface in reciprocal space. On the honeycomb lattice, spiral spin liquids present a novel route to realize emergent fracton excitations, quantum spin liquids, and topological spin textures, yet experimental realizations remain elusive. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that a spiral spin liquid is realized in the van der Waals honeycomb magnet FeCl3. A continuous ring of scattering is directly observed, which indicates the emergence of an approximate U(1) symmetry in momentum space. Our work demonstrates that spiral spin liquids can be achieved in two-dimensional systems and provides a promising platform to study the fracton physics in spiral spin liquids.

Effects of Sn substitution in SrRuO 3 epitaxial films

Epitaxial SrRu 1–x Sn x O 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) thin films were deposited on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates by sequential two-target synthesis using pulsed laser deposition to achieve stable phases in this family of quaternary perovskites. The SrRu 1–x Sn x O 3 films exhibit a good crystalline quality, a sharp interface between film and substrate, and an atomically smooth surface. A gradual expansion of the c-axis lattice parameter was observed with Sn doping serving as a means to tune chemical pressure and magnetism. With an increase in Sn doping, the resistivity of the film increased, and the ferromagnetism decreased. These results illustrate use of lattice engineering, e.g., tuning of c-axis lattice parameter with chemical doping, to control electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxial thin films for applications in oxide electronics.
