Guidance and navigation programs and plans

System technology concepts for all weather helicopter operations in both remote and high density areas were examined. The SH-36 was used to support the remote area investigations. The primary emphasis was on the development of advanced navigation concepts to allow rotorcraft to land in remote areas where there may not be a ground based navigational aid. The focus was on the used airborne weather radar, the use of high resolution radar and satellite based navigation concepts. The high density work was conducted using the UH-1H system that allows alternate guidance and navigation algorithms to be tested in flight.

An overview of the demonstration advanced avionics system guest pilot evaluation conducted at Ames Research Center

The guest pilot flight evaluation of the Demonstration Advanced Avionics System (DAAS) is discussed. The results are based on the fifty-nine questionnaires that were completed by the participants. The primary purpose of the pilot evaluation was to expose the Demonstration Advanced Avionics System to the various segments of the general aviation community and solicit comments in order to determine the effectiveness of integrated avionics for general aviation. Segments of the community that were represented in the evaluation are listed. A total of sixty-four (64) flights were conducted in which one hundred and seventeen (117) pilots and observers participated. It was felt that the exposure each subject had with the DAAS was too short to adequately assess the training requirements, pilot workload, and the reconfiguration concept of the DAAS. It is recommended that an operational evaluation of the DAAS be made to assess: the training requirements or varying experience levels, the pilot workload in the ATC environment with unplanned route changes, and the viability of the reconfiguration concept for failures.

Design, development and flight test of a demonstration advanced avionics system

The design of integrated avionics suitable for general aviation was examined. The program emphasizes the use of data busing, distributed microprocessors, shared electronic displays and data entry devices, and improved functional capability. Design considerations includes cost, reliability, maintainability, and modularity. A demonstration advanced avionics system (DAAS) was designed, built, and flight tested in a Cessna 402, twin engine, general aviation aircraft. The DAAS, and the system architecture are described.

Flight evaluation results from the general-aviation advanced avionics system program

A demonstration advanced avionics system (DAAS) for general-aviation aircraft was tested at NASA Ames Research Center to provide information required for the design of reliable, low-cost, advanced avionics systems which would make general-aviation operations safer and more practicable. Guest pilots flew a DAAS-equipped NASA Cessna 402-B aircraft to evaluate the usefulness of data busing, distributed microprocessors, and shared electronic displays, and to provide data on the DAAS pilot/system interface for the design of future integrated avionics systems. Evaluation results indicate that the DAAS hardware and functional capability meet the program objective. Most pilots felt that the DAAS representative of the way avionics systems would evolve and felt the added capability would improve the safety and practicability of general-aviation operations. Flight-evaluation results compiled from questionnaires are presented, the results of the debriefings are summarized. General conclusions of the flight evaluation are included.

Preliminary results from the NASA general aviation demonstration advanced avionics system program

NASA's Demonstration Advanced Avionics System (DAAS) is an integrated avionics system employing microprocessor technologies, data busing, and shared electronics displays. A DAAS demonstration system has been assessed through flight testing and demonstration for potential users which includes among its functions autopiloting, navigation/flight planning, a flight warning and advisory system, performance computations, normal and emergency checklists, and a ground simulation function. Exceptional performance has been obtained from the DAAS electronic horizontal situation indicator, the autopilot, the navigator/flight planner, and the discrete address beacon system.

A Demonstration Advanced Avionics System for general aviation

A program initiated within NASA has emphasized the use of a data bus, microprocessors, electronic displays and data entry devices for general aviation. A Demonstration Advanced Avionics System (DAAS) capable of evaluating critical and promising elements of an integrating system that will perform the functions of (1) automated guidance and navigation; (2) flight planning; (3) weight and balance performance computations; (4) monitoring and warning; and (5) storage of normal and emergency check lists and operational limitations is described. Consideration is given to two major parts of the DAAS instrument panel: the integrated data control center and an electronic horizontal situation indicator, and to the system architecture. The system is to be installed in the Ames Research Center's Cessna 402B in the latter part of 1980; engineering flight testing will begin in the first part of 1981.

Integrated avionics for future general aviation aircraft

The program described was initiated in 1975 to provide the critical information for the design of an advanced avionics system suitable for general aviation. Emphasis is on the use of data busing, distributed microsensors, shared electronic displays and pilot entry devices, innovative low-cost sensors, and improved functional characteristics. Design considerations include cost, reliability, maintainability, and modularity.

Flight evaluation of advanced navigation techniques for general aviation using frequency scanning

Experiments on an automatic multisensor navigation concept are being conducted in a Cessna 402B. The test system consists of VOR, DME, and air data sensors controlled by a Hewlett Packard 9820A electronic calculator which processes the data and, by means of a four-state Kalman filter, outputs position and ground and wind velocities to a map display. Novel features which make such a system potentially low-cost include frequency-scanning operation of a single VOR receiver and a single DME transceiver and use of a shed-vortex true airspeed sensor. Results obtained during flight in a local area where six to eight DME NAVAIDS were receivable yielded better than 1/4-mile accuracy.

Comments on 'Luenberger's canonical form revisited'

Results similar to those presented in the paper entitled 'Canonical forms for linear multivariable systems' by Luenberger (1967) have previously been developed for a slightly different version of Luenberger's canonical form. These results are summarized herein to provide an alternate canonical form that can be used for system identification. For certain applications, such as observer design, the canonical form presented is particularly well suited. Both canonical forms provide the same number of undefined parameters.

Status report on NASA two-segment approach program

NASA, in cooperation with the FAA, is evaluating the two-segment approach as a routine procedure for reducing aircraft noise. The program calls for separate flight evaluations using a 727 and a DC-8, and an extrapolation of these results to determine the adaptability of the technique to the rest of the fleet. After a review of the total program, this paper presents (1) the profile and procedures developed and the noise reduction achievable, (2) the vortex characteristics behind an aircraft on a two-segment path, and (3) cost estimates for retrofitting aircraft with two-segment avionics.

Flight evaluation of three-dimensional area navigation for jet transport noise abatement.

The NASA, working with American Airlines, has completed the first phase of research to evaluate the operational feasibility of two-segment approaches for noise abatement. For these tests, area navigation was used to establish the upper glide slope and an ILS was used to establish the lower. The flight director was modified to provide command information during the entire approach. Twenty-eight pilots representing the airlines, professional pilot associations, FAA, and NASA participated. With an ILS approach for comparison, the procedure gave a noise reduction of 18 EPNdB at the outer marker and 8 EPNdB 1.1 n. mi. from touchdown.
