Evaluated Nuclear Data Library, with ENDL2009.5-direct (2009.5 Rev.)

LLNL’s Nuclear Data and Theory Group have created a 2009.5 revised release of the Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (ENDL2009.5). This library is designed to support LLNL’s current and future nuclear data needs and will be employed in nuclear reactor, nuclear security and stockpile stewardship simulations with ASC codes. The ENDL2009 database was the most complete nuclear database for Monte Carlo and deterministic transport of neutrons and charged particles. It was assembled with strong support from the ASC PEM and Attribution programs, leveraged with support from Campaign 4 and the DOE/Office of Science’s US Nuclear Data Program. This document lists the revisions and fixes made in a new release called ENDL2009.5, by comparing with the existing data in the previous releases ENDL2009.3 and ENDL2009.4. In addition to the legacy library ENDL2009.5 from ENDL-format files generated by Fete, an ENDL2009.5-direct library is also released, in which ENDF6-formatted sources are used wherever possible to avoid possible translation errors from Fete.

Legacy (NDF & MCF), GNDS and Direct forms of the ENDL2009.5 Evaluated Nuclear Data Library

The ENDL2009.5 Evaluated Nuclear Data Library is now available three different processed forms for users: (1) the Legacy form using NDF and MCF processing of the ENDL files, (2) the GNDS form which uses FUDGE and Merced to process the translations in to GNDS of the ENDL files, and (3) the Direct form which uses FUDGE and Merced to process where available the original ENDF6- format source files used to make the ENDL files. If original files are not available for various protares in the Direct form, then the ENDL forms are used.

Design of multilayer-based diagnostics for measurement of high energy x rays and gamma rays

We investigate several possible multilayer-based optic designs for future hard x-ray and gamma ray diagnostics, including the detection and measurement of the positron annihilation radiation at 511 keV. The focus is set on increasing the photon efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio, compared to a previous multilayer-based system that was successfully employed to measure spectra in the 55 keV–100 keV range. Several possible designs using multilayer coatings are discussed, including mirror-based optics and multilayer Laue lenses.

Data Evaluation of Actinide Cross Sections: 230 Th and 231 Th

A new evaluation of the ENDL cross section set for Thorium (Z=90) is developed using the TALYS statistical model cross section code. The primary goal of this effort is to produce an evaluation that attempts to match as closely as possible fission cross sections developed through surrogate reaction techniques on actinide targets 230 Th and 231 Th. This evaluation effort and the processing needed to render its results into data libraries is a necessary step in making the efforts of nuclear experimentalists useful to the broad community of researchers engaged in simulations of nuclear fusion for basic and applied science. Another aspect, verification and validation against various AGEX experiments, is also presented. The end-product is an updated library that includes the latest measurements of fission cross sections for comparison against those measured via traditional techniques. All the steps in the evaluation, processing, validation and verification, and library release are described in the following sections. For completeness, the appendix contains all the parameters used in the TALYS cross section evaluation for neutrons incident on 230 Th and 231 Th.
