OSTA data systems planning workshop recommendations

The Integrated Discipline Requirements are presented, including the following needs: (1) quality data sets, (2) a systematic treatment of problems with present data, (3) a single integrated catalog or master directory, (4) continuity of data formats, (5) a standard geographic and time basis, (6) data delivery in terms of easy rather than immediate accessibility, (7) data archives, and (8) cooperation with user agencies.

An end-to-end command and control concept for NASA data systems

Spacecraft command and control are currently taking on the characteristics of general computer-to-computer interprocess communication. The evolution of these systems during the 1980s will give NASA a true general-purpose end-to-end data request capability for the first time. This concept is presented in outline, with consideration of many of the detailed analyses and subsystem tradeoffs being performed as part of the NEEDS (NASA End-to-End Data System) program.

Sensor data autonomy

'Smart' sensors onboard NASA space missions will require variable data output bandwidth as they respond to phenomena of interest. An Instrument Telemetry Packet (ITP) approach has been developed which encodes experimental instrument data into an autonomous data package, along with pertinent engineering parameters and ancillary data (time, position, attitude, etc.). New requirements for onboard concentration and buffering, as well as for end-to-end error control, arise from this approach. Emphasis is placed on packet protocols compatible with the data link standard ADCCP, to enable one set of ground support equipment to readily support instrument development, launch site checkout and mission operations phases.

GSFC Systems Test and Operation Language (STOL) functional requirements and language description

The Systems Tests and Operation Language (STOL) provides the means for user communication with payloads, applications programs, and other ground system elements. It is a systems operation language that enables an operator or user to communicate a command to a computer system. The system interprets each high level language directive from the user and performs the indicated action, such as executing a program, printing out a snapshot, or sending a payload command. This document presents the following: (1) required language features and implementation considerations; (2) basic capabilities; (3) telemetry, command, and input/output directives; (4) procedure definition and control; (5) listing, extension, and STOL nucleus capabilities.

Payload operations control center network (POCCNET) systems definition phase study report

The results of the studies performed during the systems definition phase of POCCNET are presented. The concept of POCCNET as a system of standard POCCs is described and an analysis of system requirements is also included. Alternative systems concepts were evaluated as well as various methods for development of reliable reusable software. A number of POCC application areas, such as command management, on board computer support, and simulation were also studied. Other areas of investigation included the operation of POCCNET systems, the facility requirements and usage.
