Sensor/amplifier for weak light sources

Light sensor/amplifier circuit detects weak light converts it into strong electrical signal in electrically noisy environment. Circuit is relatively simple and uses inexpensive, readily available components. Device is useful in such applications as fire detection and photographic processing.

Determination of total surface reflectivity

Method of measuring total reflectance employs relatively inexpensive reflectometer with gold-coated hemispherical reflector. Light sources may be tungsten lamp for visable region, or Globar lamp for infrared.

Ellipsometer measurements of epitaxial GaAs layers: A concept

Report discusses analysis involving Maxwell's equations formed in a 6-by-6 matrix. By applying boundary conditions at proper points in sample, equation for propagation of light through anisotropic medium is reduced to eigenvalue problem resulting in 4-by-4 matrix.

Ellipsometric measurements of epitaxial GaAs layers on a GaAs substrate

An extensive examination of ellipsometric equations for anisotropic surfaces and films is reported. It is shown that the reflection matrix can be calculated by writing Maxwell's equations in 6 x 6 matrix form and by applying appropriate boundary conditions at proper points in the development of the formalism, reducing the equation for the propagation of light to an eigenvalue problem using a 4 x 4 matrix.

A Study of the Growth of Single Crystals

Research on the growth of single crystals of the III-V compound indium antimonide was pursued in order to gain a firsthand knowledge of some factors which govern the growth of single crystals of this compound. These studies were conducted using a standard Czochralski crystal pulling furnace. This type of furnace allows crystals to be formed without being constrained to a crucible. Several factors were found to have a large detrimental effect on the growth of single crystals of indium antimonide, the most important of which seems to be the degree to which the environment surrounding the crystal during growth can be controlled. Ways to overcome these effects were determined and are outlined.
