Linear stable unity-feedback system - Necessary and sufficient conditions for stability under nonlinear plant perturbations

The authors consider a linear (not necessarily time-invariant) stable unity-feedback system, where the plant and the compensator have normalized right-coprime factorizations. They study two cases of nonlinear plant perturbations (additive and feedback), with four subcases resulting from: (1) allowing exogenous input to Delta P or not; 2) allowing the observation of the output of Delta P or not. The plant perturbation Delta P is not required to be stable. Using the factorization approach, the authors obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for all cases in terms of two pairs of nonlinear pseudostate maps. Simple physical considerations explain the form of these necessary and sufficient conditions. Finally, the authors obtain the characterization of all perturbations Delta P for which the perturbed system remains stable.

Right factorization of a class of time-varying nonlinear systems

A class of nonlinear continuous-time, time-varying plants with a state-space description which has a uniformly completely controllable linear part is considered. For this class, a right factorization is obtained. For the case in which the state is available for feedback, a normalized right-coprime factorization is realized.

Stabilization and robustness of non-linear unity-feedback system - Factorization approach

The paper is a self-contained discussion of a right factorization approach in the stability analysis of the nonlinear continuous-time or discrete-time, time-invariant or time-varying, well-posed unity-feedback system S1(P, C). It is shown that a well-posed stable feedback system S1(P, C) implies that P and C have right factorizations. In the case where C is stable, P has a normalized right-coprime factorization. The factorization approach is used in stabilization and simultaneous stabilization results.

Feedback stabilization of a class of nonlinear plants using a factorization approach

The authors generalize the right-coprimeness definition by requiring only that the corresponding plant's pseudo-state be reconstructable by a two-input one-output stable observer. They obtain right-coprime factorizations for a class of nonlinear plants for which a two-input one-output pseudo-state observer is constructed. A feedback stabilization scheme is given using this observer.

Stability of dithered non-linear systems with backlash or hysteresis

A study is conducted of the effect of dither on the nonlinear element of a single-input single-outout feedback system. Nonlinearities are considered with memory (backlash, hysteresis), in the feedforward loop; a dither of a given amplitude is injected at the input of the nonlinearity. The nonlinearity is followed by a linear element with low-pass characteristic. The stability of the dithered system and an approximate equivalent system (in which the nonlinearity is a smooth function) are compared. Conditions on the input and on the dither frequency are obtained so that the approximate-system stability guarantees that of the given hysteretic system.

Robust stability under additive perturbations

A MIMO linear time-invariant feedback system 1S(P,C) is considered which is assumed to be U-stable. The plant P is subjected to an additive perturbation Delta P which is proper but not necessarily stable. It is proved that the perturbed system is U-stable if and only if Delta P(I + Q x Delta P) exp -1 is U-stable.

On the design of large flexible space structures (LFSS)

For a general finite-element model of an LFSS, a strictly passive compensator results in an exponentially stable feedback system when actuators and sensors are calculated. In the general case (no colocation), necessary and sufficient conditions are stated on the parameter Q for stabilizing a certain number of modes. Conditions for robust stability are given, and it is shown that feedback does not destabilize the unmodeled modes under certain conditions.

Tracking and disturbance rejection of MIMO nonlinear systems with PI controller

The tracking and disturbance rejection of a class of MIMO nonlinear systems with linear proportional plus integral (PI) compensator is studied. Roughly speaking, it is shown that if the given nonlinear plant is exponentially stable and has a strictly increasing dc steady-state I/O map, then a simple PI compensator can be used to yield a stable unity-feedback closed-loop system which asymptotically tracks reference inputs that tend to constant vectors and asymptotically rejects disturbances that tend to constant vectors.

A comparative study of linear and nonlinear MIMO feedback configurations

In this paper, a comparison is conducted of several feedback configurations which have appeared in the literature (e.g. unity-feedback, model-reference, etc.). The linear time-invariant multi-input multi-output case is considered. For each configuration, the stability conditions are specified, the relation between achievable I/O maps and the achievable disturbance-to-output maps is examined, and the effect of various subsystem perturbations on the system performance is studied. In terms of these considerations, it is demonstrated that one of the configurations considered is better than all the others. The results are then extended to the nonlinear multi-input multi-output case.

Asymptotic unbounded root loci - Formulas and computation

A new geometric way of computing the asymptotic behavior of unbounded root loci of a strictly proper linear time-invariant control system as loop gain goes to infinity is presented. Properties of certain restricted linear maps and nested restrictions of linear maps are developed, and formulas are obtained for the leading coefficient of the asymptotic values of the unbounded multivariable root loci are obtained in terms of eigenvalues of those maps. Published results and a certain simple null structure assumption are used to relate these asymptotic values to the structure at infinity of the Smith-McMillan form of the open loop transfer function. Explicit matrix formulas for the more abstract derived formulas are given and additional geometric insights are developed with orthogonal projections and singular value decomposition. Formulas for the pivots of the unbounded root loci are calculated and shown to have the same form as the coefficients of the unbounded asymptotic root loci.

L/superscript-p/ stability /p ranging from 1 to infinity/ of multivariable non-linear time-varying feedback systems that are open-loop unstable

The loop transformation technique (Sandberg, 1965; Zames, 1966, Willems, 1971), and the fixed point theorem (Schwartz, 1970) are used to derive the L(superscript-p) stability for a class of multivariable nonlinear time-varying feedback systems which are open-loop unstable. The application of the fixed point theorem in L(superscript-p) shows that the nonlinear feedback system has one and only one solution for any pair of inputs in L(superscript-p), that the solutions are continuously dependent on the inputs, and that the closed loop system is L(superscript-p)-stable for any p ranging from 1 to infinity.

Lp-stability (1 less than or equal to p less than or equal to infinity) of multivariable nonlinear time-varying feedback systems that are open-loop unstable

A class of multivariable, nonlinear time-varying feedback systems with an unstable convolution subsystem as feedforward and a time-varying nonlinear gain as feedback was considered. The impulse response of the convolution subsystem is the sum of a finite number of increasing exponentials multiplied by nonnegative powers of the time t, a term that is absolutely integrable and an infinite series of delayed impulses. The main result is a theorem. It essentially states that if the unstable convolution subsystem can be stabilized by a constant feedback gain F and if incremental gain of the difference between the nonlinear gain function and F is sufficiently small, then the nonlinear system is L(p)-stable for any p between one and infinity. Furthermore, the solutions of the nonlinear system depend continuously on the inputs in any L(p)-norm. The fixed point theorem is crucial in deriving the above theorem.

A graphical test for checking the stability of a linear time-invariant feedback system.

A continuous-time scalar linear time-invariant feedback system is considered for the purpose of checking Willems' (1969, 1970) graphical test for a scalar linear time-invariant feedback system with constant feedback. Heavy reliance is placed on the theory of almost periodic functions. Following definition of the problem and layout of notation, attention is given to solution of the problem, considering only the almost periodic part of the open-loop transfer function.

Convolution feedback systems.

Linear time-invariant feedback systems with multiple inputs and multiple outputs are examined. It is demonstrated that no loss of generality takes place considering the feedback to be unity. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the closed-loop impulse response to be stable in a prescribed sense.
