Extreme Deep Space Communications

Recent work in deep space telecommunication systems has been performed in support of NASA's Mission to the Solar System planning activity. The results show that high bandwidth communications (higher thatn 1 Mbps) are feasible with communication infrastructure investments at targets of high exploration activity. These targets include Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune. Infrastructure improvements must also be made at Earth.

Advances In Coding For Nearly Errorless Communication

Report surveys state of art of coding digital data for nearly errorless communication over long distances. Coding techniques described include mainly ones that have been or might be used to transmit imagery and/or other data from spacecraft to receivers on Earth.

Cheung, Kar-Ming↗

A plan for the development and demonstration of optical communications for deep space

A development history, current status, and prospective development account are given for deep-space optical communications, giving attention to overall systems-related activities and to the generic technology developments required for their implementation. An account is given of the progression envisioned from laboratory subsystems demonstrations to the full-scale flight experiment for the Mars Communications Relay Orbiter missions.

VLSI single-chip (255,223) Reed-Solomon encoder with interleaver

The invention relates to a concatenated Reed-Solomon/convolutional encoding system consisting of a Reed-Solomon outer code and a convolutional inner code for downlink telemetry in space missions, and more particularly to a Reed-Solomon encoder with programmable interleaving of the information symbols and code correction symbols to combat error bursts in the Viterbi decoder.

Architecture for time or transform domain decoding of reed-solomon codes

Two pipeline (255,233) RS decoders, one a time domain decoder and the other a transform domain decoder, use the same first part to develop an errata locator polynomial .tau.(x), and an errata evaluator polynominal A(x). Both the time domain decoder and transform domain decoder have a modified GCD that uses an input multiplexer and an output demultiplexer to reduce the number of GCD cells required. The time domain decoder uses a Chien search and polynomial evaluator on the GCD outputs .tau.(x) and A(x), for the final decoding steps, while the transform domain decoder uses a transform error pattern algorithm operating on .tau.(x) and the initial syndrome computation S(x), followed by an inverse transform algorithm in sequence for the final decoding steps prior to adding the received RS coded message to produce a decoded output message.

Single-Chip VLSI Reed-Solomon Decoder

Efficient utilization of computing elements reduces size while preserving throughput. VLSI architecture is pipeline Reed-Solomon decoder for correction of errors and erasures. Uses transform circuit to compute syndrome polynomial. Erasure information enters decoder as binary sequence. Applied to variety of digital communications involving error-correcting RS codes.

VLSI-Chip Tester

Compact test set integrated in computer-aided design system. Test set performs functional tests on very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuits. Makes tests from points within VLSI chip as well as at input and output pins. Used for quality control and design; in latter capacity, checks internal logic functions on chip and feed results directly to computer-aided design system for correction. Also simulates operation of chip design before chip is made. VLSI Tester contains three power supplies, control logic, and standard multibus circuit board in aluminum chassis. Chassis fits under platform of microprobe station. Multibus board links tester to interactive terminals and to host computer.
