Combustion Studies of MMA/GOx for a Hybrid Rocket Motor
Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA), used in a multitude of applications, including as a solid fuel in hybrid rockets. PMMA undergoes pyrolysis into gaseous MMA (C5H8O2), which then undergoes combustion into carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide and low-molecular-weight compounds, including formaldehyde. Hybrid rocket motors as seen in the schematic in Fig. 1, contains the oxidizer in a pressurized tank, which is released through a port in the solid fuel grain in the combustion chamber, after which the combustion products are exhausted through a converging diverging nozzle.
