Modeling of Nickel Hydroxide Electrode Containing Multiple Phases

Mathematical models of alkaline rechargeable nickel cell systems (e.g., Ni-Cd, Ni-H(sub 2) and Ni-MH) have so far been developed based on the assumption that the active material at Ni electrode exists primarily in a single phase as Beta-NiOOH -- Beta-Ni(OH)(sub 2), despite enough experimental evidence for the second phase, i.e., Gamma-NiOOH -- Alpha-Ni(OH)(sub 2), especially under conditions of extended coverage. Here, we have incorporated the additional couple of Gamma-NiOOH -- Alpha-Ni(OH)(sub 2) into the modeling of the Ni electrode.

Kinetics of intercalation of lithium into NbSe3 and TiS2 cathodes

Titanium disulfide and niobium triselenide are two well-studied candidate materials for positive electrodes in rechargeable lithium cells. A comparative study of the kinetics of intercalation of lithium in both the cathodes is made here based on various electrochemical techniques, i.e., linear polarization, potentiodynamic polarization, and ac impedance under different experimental conditions such as prismatic or disk configuration of fresh, partially discharged, or cycled electrode. Further, the diffusion coefficients of lithium ions in these cathodes are estimated under these conditions using conventional techniques, i.e., ac impedance, chronocoulometry, chronoamperometry, and current pulse relaxation. Based on the values of the diffusion coefficients, the applicability of these methods for the determination of diffusion coefficients is discussed.

Evaluation of advanced NiCd cell designs for NASA applications

It is pointed out that an advanced NiCd cell based on a Hughes Aircraft Company design appears to show the most promise in the current generation of aerospace NiCd batteries. The cell was designed to ameliorate the major failure mechanisms of NiCd cells. This required cell design and process modifications and the use of alternate materials for some of the components (the most notable one being the substitution of zirconia cloth for nylon as the separator material). Recent reports in the literature indicate that the improvement in the performance of this technology appears to have been verified for GEO (geosynchronous)-type applications. The authors report on initial results of the evaluation of the advanced NiCd technology for applications of interest to NASA. They summarize the characteristics of cells based on the advanced technology from the time of manufacture to their current cell cycling status.

12-crown-4 ether-assisted enhancement of ionic conductivity and interfacial kinetics in polyethylene oxide electrolytes

The electrical and electrochemical properties of thin films of polyethylene oxide electrolytes with and without 12-crown-4 ether (12Cr4) are studied as a function of temperature and in the frequency regime from 100 kHz to 0.1 Hz. These measurements were made on electrolytes containing LiCF3SO3, LiBF4, or LiClO4 salts. At a given temperature, the bulk conductivity for a particular salt depends on the 12Cr4 concentration, reaching a maximum for a ratio of 12Cr4 to Li of 0.003.

Electrochemistry of metal chloride cathodes in sodium batteries

Fundamental electrochemical studies on three candidate materials, i.e., FeCl2, NiCl2, and CuCl2, were carried out using various techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, linear polarization, potentiodynamic polarization, and ac impedance. These studies were aimed at identifying various rate processes in the reduction, elucidating the reaction mechanisms, and determining the kinetic parameters for the reduction. The limitations in the performance of these cathode materials in high power density applications were also examined. Finally, recommendations were made from these studies for the selection of a candidate system among these materials for future NASA applications.

Advanced rechargeable sodium batteries with novel cathodes

Various high energy density rechargeable batteries are being considered for future space applications. Of these, the sodium-sulfur battery is one of the leading candidates. The primary advantage is the high energy density (760 W h/kg theoretical). Energy densities in excess of 180 W h/kg have been realized in practical batteries. More recently, cathodes other than sulfur are being evaluated. Various new cathode materials are presently being evaluated for use in high energy density sodium batteries for advanced space applications. The approach is to carry out basic electrochemical studies of these materials in a sodium cell configuration in order to understand their fundamental behaviors. Thus far, the studies have focussed on alternative metal chlorides such as CuCl2 and organic cathode materials such as TCNE.

Effects of 12-Crown-4 ether on the ionic conductivity and electrode kinetics of electrolytes in polyethylene oxide

Results are described of investigations of the electrical and electrochemical properties of thin films of polyethylene oxide (PEO) electrolytes with and without 12-Crown-4 ether (12Cr4) as a function of temperature and in the frequency regime 100 kHz-0.1 Hz. These measurements were made for LiCF3SO3, LiBF4, and LiClO4 salts. At a given temperature, the bulk conductivity, sigma, (S/cm), for a particular salt, depends on the 12Cr4 concentration with sigma reaching a maximum at about 3 mM 12Cr4. Of the three salts studied, the sigma is the highest for PEO/LiBF4 with 3 mM 12Cr4. The ac and dc measurements yield a lower charge transfer resistance for 12Cr4-incorporated samples than for samples without. Plating/stripping of Li occurs at a potential closer to Li(+)/Li for 12Cr4 samples than those without. The conductivities of a thin (about 100 microns) and a thick (400 microns) films are similar.

Electrochemical studies on niobium triselenide cathode material for lithium rechargeable cells

The electrochemical behavior of NbSe3 in the battery electrolyte 1.5M LiAsF6/2Me-THF is reported. A detailed study has been carried out using various ac and dc electrochemical techniques to establish the mechanism of intercalation of three equivalents of Li with NbSe3 as well as the rate governing processes in the reduction of NbSe3. An equivalent circuit has been formulated to represent the NbSe3-solution interface. The kinetic parameters for the reduction of NbSe3 were evaluated from the ac and dc measurements. The structural change in NbSe3 on lithiation during initial discharge which results in higher cell voltages and different electrochemical response as compared to virgin NbSe3 was identified to be a loss of crystallographic order.

Aerospace applications of sodium batteries using novel cathode materials

Preliminary fundamental investigations aimed at evaluating sodium metal chloride systems for future aerospace applications are described. Since the sodium metal chloride systems are relatively new, the approach has been to characterize their fundamental properties in order to understand their limitations. To this end, a series of fundamental electrochemical investigations have been carried out, the results of which are reported here. The metal chloride cathodes show high exchange current densities which corroborate their good reversibility in a battery application. The reduction mechanisms appear to be complex and involve multielectron transfer steps and intermediates. Such intermediates in the reaction mechanism have already been identified in the case of FeCl2. Similar mechanisms may be operative in the case of NiCl2. CuCl2, however, exhibits a second relaxation loop in the impedance plot at low frequencies and also a sloping discharge curve, unlike FeCl2 and NiCl2, which may indicate the existence of monovalent copper in the reduction mechanism.

Electrochemical behavior of niobium triselenide cathode in lithium secondary cells

Niobium triselenide cathodes in Li ambient-temperature rechargeable batteries for space applications undergo a topotactic reaction, with three equivalents of Li at high positive potential furnishing high energy density. It also yields good electronic conductivity, a long life cycle, and high diffusivity for Li. An attempt is presently made to characterize the intercalation mechanism between Li and NbSe3 by means of an ac impedance study conducted at various charge stages in the process of SbSe3 reduction. An effort is also made to predict the charge state of NbSe3 nondestructively, on the basis of the impedance parameters.

Electrochemical studies of thin films of conducting polymers and conducting polymer composites deposited on metal and semiconductor electrodes

Electrochemical studies indicate that poly(Isothianaphthene) or PITN, can be p-doped only. Electrochemical properties of PITN and Nafion-PITN in acetonitrile solutions containing tetra-phenyl Phosphonium chloride as supporting electrolyte are compared. In both cases, the electrochemical behavior of thin films are different from that of thick films. In addition, Nafion does not seem to alter the electrochemical properties of PITN. Cyclic voltammetric and chronocoulometric measurements were made to compute the diffusion coefficient of the counter ions. Electrochemical behavior of both PITN and Nafion-PITN in acetonitrile solution containing different counter ions are described. PITN, when electrochemically deposited, apparently neither passivates surface states present nor forms ohmic contacts with p-Si or p(+)Si single-crystal electrodes.

Degradation in nickel-cadmium cells studied by impedance measurements

The impedance characteristics of various Ni-Cd cells were measured at different times during accelerated charge/discharge trials to identify characteristics indicative of cell lifetime and cycle history. The tests were performed as part of an attempt to develop nondestructive testing techniques to detect flaws in batteries installed on low-earth orbit satellites. Trials consisted of 60 min charging and 40 min discharging, covering 20, 30, and 40 C temperatures, 20, 35, and 50 percent depth of discharge, and the average cycle life. No correlations were derived between impedance characteristics and cycle life. Other possible techniques for evaluating predictors of battery performance are discussed.

Photothermal degradation of ethylene/vinylacetate copolymer

Photothermal degradation studies were conducted on a 'stabilized' formulation of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) in the temperature range 25-105 C under three different oxygen environments (in open air, with limited access to O2, and in a dark closed stagnant oven). These studies were performed in order to evaluate the utility of EVA as an encapsulation material for photovoltaic modules. Results showed that at low temperature (25 C), slow photooxidation of the polymer occurred via electronic energy transfer involving the UV absorber incorporated in the polymer. However, no changes in the physical properties of the bulk polymer were detected up to 1500 hours of irradiation. At elevated temperatures, leaching and evaporation of the additives occurred, which ultimately resulted in the chemical crosslinking of the copolymer and the formation of volatile photoproducts such as acetic acid.

Time-resolved spectroscopy of solid poly/1-vinyl naphthalene/ following electron beam pulse radiolysis - Pulse radiolytic studies on polymers

Transient emission studies following pulse radiolysis of solid poly(1-vinyl naphthalene) show existence of excited monomers and two excimers. Quenching experiments indicate that excimers are not formed directly by recombination of ions but probably by trapping of migrating monomeric excitation in preformed traps whose density is approximately one in 1000.
