Broadband Uniplanar Microstrip to Slot-Line Transitions

New in line uniplanar microstrip-to-slotline transitions for MIC/MMIC and phased array slotline antenna applications are described. Such transactions are compact and suitable to be used in an open environment or inside a package or a multichip module. The transitions share the concept of using a balun which consists of two microstrip lines connected to a slotline through a pair of coupled microstrips. The transitions are studied theoretically using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique and measured experimentally using an HP8510C Network Analyzer. For a back-to-back configuration, an insertion loss of less than 1.3 dB per transition is achieved over a 40% 3-dB bandwidth with a minimum of 0.6 dB at the design frequency.

A Novel Transition Between Rectangular Waveguide and Layered Ridge Dielectric Waveguide

A novel transition between rectangular waveguide and layered ridge dielectric waveguide (LRDW) is reported. The transition is also suitable for use with image guide, insulated image guide, dielectric ridge waveguide and other open dielectric waveguides. Both experimental and theoretical data are presented which compare the new transition to three transitions reported in the literature.

Theoretical and Experimental Study of Microstrip-to-Slot Line Uniplanar Transition

Recent advances in MMCI technology make it possible to construct transitions from CPW-to-microstrip with via hole, microstrip-to-slot line and microshield line-to-CPW all of which have potential applications in the feed network of antennas. In this study we investigate the characteristics of the microstrip-to-slot line uniplanar transition using the finite element methods (FEM) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) techniques, and compared the theoretical results with the measurements. In both cases, the results agree with the measurements within a few percent.

Analysis of a Slot Coupled Coplanar Waveguide Fed Patch Antenna

A slot-coupled CPW fed patch antenna is analyzed using two different techniques: the Spectral Domain Method and the Finite Difference Time Domain Method. The results from both techniques are in good agreement with experimentally obtained data.

Characterization of Asymmetric Coplanar Waveguide Discontinuities

A general technique to characterize asymmetric coplanar waveguide (CPW) discontinuities with air bridges where both the fundamental coplanar and slotline modes may be excited together is presented. First, the CPW discontinuity without air bridges is analyzed using the space-domain integral equation (SDIE) approach. Second, the parameters (phase, amplitude, and wavelength) of the coplanar and slotline modes are extracted from an amplitude modulated-like standing wave existing in the CPW feeding lines. Then a 2n x 2n generalized scattering matrix of the n-port discontinuity without air bridges is derived which includes the occurring mode conversion. Finally, this generalized scattering matrix is reduced to an n x n matrix by enforcing suitable conditions at the ports which correspond to the excited slotline mode. For the purpose of illustration, the method is applied to a shielded asymmetric short-end CPW shunt stub, the scattering parameters of which are compared with those of a symmetric one. Experiments are performed on both discontinuities and the results are in good agreement with theoretical data. The advantages of using air bridges in CPW circuits as opposed to bond wires are also discussed.

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of coplanar waveguide shunt stubs

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of straight and bent coplanar waveguide (CPW) shunt stubs is presented. In the theoretical analysis, the CPW is assumed to be inside a cavity, while, the experiments are performed on open structures. A hybrid technique was developed to analyze the CPW discontinuities which proved to be accurate since the theoretical and experimental results agree very well. The effect of the cavity resonances on the behavior of the stubs with and without air-bridges is investigated. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to the discontinuities is evaluated experimentally.

A comparative study between shielded and open coplanar waveguide discontinuities

A comparative study between open and shielded coplanar waveguide (CPW) discontinuities is presented. The space domain integral equation method is used to characterize several discontinuities such as the open-end CPW and CPW series stubs. Two different geometries of CPW series stubs (straight and bent stubs) are compared with respect to resonant frequency and radiation loss. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to different CPW shunt stubs is evaluated experimentally. The notion of forced radiation simulation is presented, and the results of such a simulation are compared to the actual radiation loss obtained rigorously. It is shown that such a simulation cannot give reliable results concerning radiation loss from printed circuits.

A theoretical and experimental study of coplanar waveguide shunt stubs

A comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of straight and bent coplanar waveguide (CPW) shunt stubs is presented. In the theoretical analysis, the CPW is assumed to be inside a cavity while, the experiments are performed on open structures. For the analysis of CPW discontinuities with air-bridges, a hybrid technique was developed which was validated through extensive theoretical and experimental comparisons. The effect of the cavity resonances on the behavior of the stubs with and without air-bridges is investigated. In addition, the encountered radiation loss due to the discontinuities is evaluated experimentally.

A theoretical and experimental study of microshield circuits

The novel type of monolithic planar transmission line presently studied theoretically and experimentally operates without via-holes or ground-equalizing air bridges; it also radiates less than conventional coplanar waveguides and furnishes a wide range of impedances in virtue of its many design parameters. The space-domain integral equation method is used to analyze several discontinuities of the proposed line. It is shown that the proposed line discontinuities radiate less than the corresponding coplanar waveguide cases.

Theoretical and experimental characterization of coplanar waveguide discontinuities for filter applications

A full-wave analysis of shielded coplanar waveguide two-port discontinuities based on the solution of an appropriate surface integral equation in the space domain is presented. Frequency-dependent scattering parameters for open-end and short-end coplanar waveguide (CPW) stubs are computed using this method. The numerically derived results are compared with measurements performed in the frequency range 5-25 GHz and show very good agreement. From the scattering parameters, lumped-element equivalent circuits have been derived to model the discontinuities. The inductors and capacitors of these models have been represented by closed-form equations, as functions of the stub length, to compute the circuit element values for these discontinuities.
