Identified charged-hadron production in 𝑝+Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron (𝜋 ± , 𝐾 ± , 𝑝, $\bar{𝑝}$) production at midrapidity in 𝑝 + Al, 3 He + Au, and Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum (𝑝 𝑇 ) and transverse-mass (𝑚 𝑇 ) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of 𝐾/𝜋 and 𝑝/𝜋 have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu + Au and U + U) and small (𝑝 + Al and 3 He + Au) collision systems. The values of 𝐾/𝜋 ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in 𝑝+𝑝 collisions. However, the values of 𝑝/𝜋 ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of ≈0.6, which is a factor of ≈2 larger than in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors (𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 ) are also presented. Enhancement of proton 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values over meson 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values was observed in central 3 He + Au, Cu + Au, and U + U collisions. Finally, the proton 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values measured in the 𝑝 + Al collision system were found to be consistent with 𝑅 𝐴⁢𝐵 values of 𝜙, 𝜋 ± , 𝐾 ± , and 𝜋 0 mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in 𝑝 + Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production.

Erratum: Lévy-stable two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in s N N = 200 GeV Au + Au collisions [Phys. Rev. C 97 , 064911 (2018)]

We previously published in 2018 a detailed measurement recorded in 2010 for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{^SNN}$ = 200 GeV of charged two-pion correlation functions in 0%-30% centrality. We found the data to be well described by Bose-Einstein correlation functions stemming from L$\acute{e}$vy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extracted the correlation strength parameter λ, the L$\acute{e}$vy index of stability α and the L$\acute{e}$vy length scale parameter R as a function of average transverse mass of the pair m T .

Low-$p_T$ direct-photon production in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 62.4 GeV

Here, the measurement of direct photons from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 62.4 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.4 < $p_T$ < 3 Gev/c is presented by the PHENIX collaboration at the BNLRelativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant direct-photon yield is observed in both collision systems. A universal scaling is observed when the direct-photon $p_T$ spectra for different center-of-mass energies and for different centrality selections at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 62.4 GeV is scaled with $(dN_{\text{ch}}/dη)^α$ for α = 1.21 ± 0.04. This scaling also holds true for direct-photon spectra from Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV measured earlier by PHENIX, as well as the spectra from Pb + Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2760 GeV published by ALICE. The scaling power α seems to be independent of $p_T$, center of mass energy, and collision centrality. The spectra from different collision energies have a similar shape up to $p_T$ of 2 Gev/c. The spectra have a local inverse slope $T_{\text{eff}}$ increasing with $p_T$ of 0.174 ± 0.018 Gev/c in the range 0.4 < $p_T$ < 1.3 Gev/c and increasing to 0.289 ± 0.024 Gev/c for 0.9 < $p_T$ < 2.1 Gev/c. The observed similarity of low-$p_T$ direct-photon production from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 to 2760 GeV suggests a common source of direct photons for the different collision energies and event centrality selections, and suggests a comparable space-time evolution of direct-photon emission.

Measurement of φ-meson production in Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of φ-meson production in asymmetric Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the φ → K + K – decay channel at midrapidity |η| < 0.35. Features of φ- meson production measured in Cu + Cu, Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the φ meson in Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$ , φ-meson production measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. Finally, the elliptic flow for φ mesons measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is well described by a (2+1)-dimensional viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity η/s = 1/4π.

Production of $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons at midrapidity in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 192$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the $π^0(η) → γγ$ decay modes. A strong suppression of $π^0$ and $\eta$ meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions relative to binary scaled p + p results. Yields of $π^0$ and $\eta$ mesons measured in $\mathrm{U+U}$ collisions show similar suppression pattern to those measured in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt {s_{NN}} = 200$ $\mathrm {GeV}$ for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The $η/π^0$ ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Production of b b ¯ at forward rapidity in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ( b b ¯ ) production in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ( 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 ). The b b ¯ signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral B meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of d σ b b ¯ → μ ± μ ± / d y = 0.16 ± 0.01 ( stat ) ± 0.02 ( syst ) ± 0.02 ( global ) nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and p T ranges 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 and p T > 1 GeV / c , and dimuon mass of 5 – 10 GeV / c 2 . The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for b b ¯ production is 13.1 ± 0.6 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) ± 2.7 ( global ) μ b . The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from b b ¯ decays and their p T distributions are compared to distributions generated using ps pythia 6, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair p T distribution are not very well described by pythia calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

Directional Degradation of Spectralon Diffuser Under Ionizing Radiation for Calibration of Space-Based Sensors

Assessment of the effect of Vacuum Ultra Violet (VUV) irradiation on the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of Spectralon is presented in this paper. The sample was a 99% white Spectralon calibration standard irradiated with VUV source positioned at 60o off the irradiation direction for a total of 20 hours. The BRDF before and after VUV irradiation was measured and compared at number of wavelengths in the UV, VIS and IR. Non-isotropic directional degradation of Spectralon diffuser under ionizing radiation was detected at different BRDF measurement geometries primarily at UV spectral range. The 8o directional/hemispherical reflectance of the same sample was also measured and compared from 200nm to 2500nm. Index Terms BRDF, Reflectance, Multiangular, Spectralon, Remote Sensing

Analysis of water from the Space Shuttle and Mir Space Station by ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis

Drinking water and condensate samples collected from the US Space Shuttle and the Russian Mir Space Station are analyzed routinely at the NASA-Johnson Space Center as part of an ongoing effort to verify water quality and monitor the environment of the spacecraft. Water quality monitoring is particularly important for the Mir water supply because approximately half of the water consumed is recovered from humidity condensate. Drinking water on Shuttle is derived from the fuel cells. Because there is little equipment on board the spacecraft for monitoring the water quality, samples collected by the crew are transported to Earth on Shuttle or Soyuz vehicles, and analyzed exhaustively. As part of the test battery, anions and cations are measured by ion chromatography, and carboxylates and amines by capillary electrophoresis. Analytical data from Shuttle water samples collected before and after several missions, and Mir condensate and potable recovered water samples representing several recent missions are presented and discussed. Results show that Shuttle water is of distilled quality, and Mir recovered water contains various levels of minerals imparted during the recovery processes as designed. Organic ions are rarely detected in potable water samples, but were present in humidity condensate samples.

On the characteristics of emulsion chamber family events produced in low heights

The uncertainty of the primary cosmic ray composition at 10 to the 14th power -10 to the 16th power eV is well known to make the study of the nuclear interaction mechanism more difficult. Experimentally considering, if one can identify effectively the family events which are produced in low heights, then an event sample induced by primary protons might be able to be separated. It is undoubtedly very meaningful. In this paper an attempt is made to simulate the family events under the condition of mountain emulsion chamber experiments with a reasonable model. The aim is to search for the dependence of some experimentally observable quantities to the interaction height.
