Meas. K+ -Ar Total Inelastic Cross Section at ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE-SP is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber that took hadron test beam data in 2018. The test beam included positively charged kaons with test beam momenta of 6 GeV/c and 7 GeV/c, providing a sample to study kaons to benefit future DUNE proton decay and neutrino interaction studies with kaons in the final state. The total inelastic cross section of a positively charged kaon was measured at these test beam settings using the LArIAT thin-slice method of dividing the wires of the time projection chamber into target slices for calculating the cross section, which leverages the monolithic quality of liquid argon detectors. A Bayesian-like unfolding method using RooUnfold was applied to both the incident and interacting slice distributions to measure the cross sections at both test beam momenta. The talk will discuss the method of unfolding, optimization studies for unfolding, and applying systematic uncertainties using a LArIAT-style hadronic cross section using unfolding to extract a kaon total inelastic cross section.

Status of Measuring Cross Sections of Hadrons on Argon with ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE Single-Phase is a 700-ton liquid argon detector operated in the CERN Neutrino Platform from 2018 to 2020. It is part of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a 40 kT liquid argon far detector to be built at the Sanford Underground Research Facility and a near detector, with both argon and non-argon detector technologies, to be hosted at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. A critical uncertainty to understand in the neutrino oscillation program of DUNE is the uncertainty on final state interactions, either reaction or elastic, of various hadrons on argon since the scattering of neutrino-induced hadrons off argon bias the hadron's measured energy. It can also prevent algorithms from identifying the hadron's particle type. Protons, kaons, and pions from the beam are especially important for the DUNE neutrino program as they represent common final state particles in neutrino interactions off a nucl eus. Therefore, ProtoDUNE is analyzing the test beam data to measure cross sections of pions, protons, and kaons on argon, aiming to tune parameters that model charged particle scattering off argon. This talk will discuss the data-taking program for ProtoDUNE and an overview of the status and results of measuring cross sections of pions, protons, and kaons on argon. It will conclude with a brief overview of how these measurements can be used for future liquid argon neutrino detectors.

Prototyping the Light Detection of the DUNE Near Detector

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a 70kt liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr TPC) at the Far Detector complex at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) and a Near Detector (ND) complex planned for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The ND complex plans for three detector subsystems, including a modular LAr TPC comprised of 35 optically segregated modules. The modular detector design required the development a novel dielectric light readout, the ArCLight technology, which can be operated in a high voltage environment and has a large active surface. A demonstrator of four modular detectors, DUNE ND-LAr 2x2, will operate in 2023 in Fermilab's NuMI beam. After the construction of the modules was completed, they were successfully operated and commissioned in liquid argon using cosmic-ray muons at the University of Bern. This talk will discuss the designs of the light readout systems used in these modules with focus on the construction and commissioning of the ArCLights as well as the performance of the LRS during the tests at Bern.

Recent MicroBooNE cross-section results: neutrino-induced baryon production

The MicroBooNE detector is a liquid argon time projection chamber based at Fermilab that sits on-axis of the Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam and off-axis of Fermilab’s NuMI beam.MicroBooNE has investigated the MiniBooNE anomaly using the BNB and published a wide array of inclusive and exclusive neutrino-argon cross section results using both neutrino beams. These proceedings highlight recent public results from MicroBooNE on cross sections involving charged baryons in the final state without mesons. These results have been compared to various event generator simulations with agreement observed between the data and predictions.

Energy Reconstruction and Calibration of the MicroBooNE LArTPC

MicroBooNE uses a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) for simultaneous tracking and calorimetry. Neutrino oscillation experiments plan to use LArTPCs over the next several decades. A challenge for these current and future experiments lies in characterizing detector performance and reconstruction capabilities with thorough associated systematic uncertainties. This work includes updates related to LArTPC detector physics challenges by reviewing MicroBooNE’s recent publications on calorimetry and its applications. Highlights include discussions on signal processing, calorimetric calibration, and particle identification.

The role of ProtoDUNE-SP in future oscillation physics

Long-baseline oscillation experiments are entering a new phase where neutrino beams can provide ultra-high fuxes over long distances. These beams will lead to an era of high statistics in large neutrino detectors, creating new systematic uncertainty-limited analyses. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) plans a high fux beam to travel 1300 km to 10-kT liquid argon detector modules. While neither the near detector nor the far detector has been constructed, prototypes of the DUNE Far Detector have been built and operated at CERN. One prototype, ProtoDUNE Single-Phase, is a full-scale mockup of the first 10-kT DUNE Far Detector module and can inform DUNE on detector performance and particle passage in argon. The proceedings discuss some published and in-progress results from ProtoDUNE-SP and how these results can impact current sensitivity studies and future analyses.

Evaluating the ProtoDUNE-SP Detector Performance to Measure a 6 GeV/c Positive Kaon Inelastic Cross Section on Argon

The ProtoDUNE Single-Phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber \\ (ProtoDUNE-SP LArTPC) is a prototype for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), a future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Based at the CERN Neutrino Platform, ProtoDUNE-SP LArTPC collected data from a charged test beam in the fall of 2018. It then took data of cosmic-ray muons from November 2018 to the summer of 2020. The main goals of the prototype were to measure parameters related to charged particle passage in argon and evaluate the performance of the detector to inform future DUNE Far Detector development. The test beam provided kaons, pions, muons, protons, and electrons to the detector. These particles represent common final state particles in neutrino interactions, therefore providing information to DUNE on modeling charged particles in argon for its neutrino physics program. In addition to neutrino physics, DUNE has proposed an analysis using the DUNE Far Detector module to set limits for proton decay through the decay channel $p\rightarrow K^++\bar{\nu}$. This measurement would require information on kaons in argon, providing ProtoDUNE-SP LArTPC another opportunity to aid DUNE. This thesis describes the calibration of ProtoDUNE-SP and its detector performance, which serves as a benchmark for the performance of the DUNE Far Detector modules. A specific calibration highlighted is the evaluation of the liquid argon purity in the detector. These measurements use cosmic-ray muons reconstructed in the detector that are calibrated and matched to data from scintillator strips external to the TPC, known as the Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT). The thesis will discuss the algorithms to match the data between the ProtoDUNE-SP LArTPC and the CRT and discuss the liquid argon purity measurements using one of the algorithms. Data sets of calibrated tracks measured the liquid argon contamination as consistently below 100 ppt oxygen equivalent. After these discussions on the ProtoDUNE-SP LArTPC detector, the thesis will present an evaluation of the inclusive inelastic, sometimes referred to as a reactive, cross section on argon of kaons from the ProtoDUNE-SP test beam with an average momentum of 6 GeV/c.

Energy calibration of the ProtoDUNE-SP TPC

The single-phase liquid argon prototype at CERN (ProtoDUNE-SP) acts as a validation of the design for the DUNE single-phase far detector. With a total mass of 770 tons, it is the largest monolithic liquid argon single-phase time projection chamber in the world. ProtoDUNE-SP collected test-beam in autumn of 2018 and has been collecting cosmic and special calibration data since the end of 2018. To analyze data from the test-beam, a calibration plan using cosmic muons passing through the detector was developed. An outline of this plan and its impact on the calorimetric measurements of the detector will be discussed.

Purity monitoring for ProtoDUNE

The next-generation neutrino experiment, DUNE, will utilize a high-intensity neutrino beam produced to measure electron-neutrino appearance and muon-neutrino disappearance with its 40 kilotons (fiducial mass) liquid argon far detector. Liquid argon purity is crucial to use liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPC) in DUNE’s large detectors. A purity monitor is a miniature TPC that measures the lifetime of photoelectrons generated by its UV-illuminated gold photocathode to measure the purity of liquid argon. ProtoDUNEs are full-scale DUNE prototype LArTPCs built at CERNand perform beam tests. The following will discuss the design, implementation, and results of liquid argon purity monitors deployed in ProtoDUNE.
