Design Of Trellis Codes For Fading Channels

Report develops theoretical basis for design of trellis codes that perform optimally when used in multiple trellis-coded modulation on Rician fading communication channels. Codes perform better than codes designed to be optimal on nonfading channels with only additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Design of improved codes based on new distance measure suitable for fading channels. ("Distance" denotes measure of separation in abstract space in theory of codes rather than in ordinary three-dimensional space.)

Doppler-corrected differential detection of MPSK

An open-loop technique is presented for estimating and correcting Doppler frequency shift in an M-ary differential phase-shift-keyed (MDPSK) receiver. The novelty of the scheme is based on the observation that whereas the change in phase of the received signal over a full symbol contains the sum of the data (phase) and the Doppler-induced phase shift, the same change in phase over half a symbol (within a given symbol interval) contains only the Doppler-induced phase shift. Thus, by proper processing, the latter can be estimated and removed from the former. Analytical and simulation results are given for the variance of the above estimator, and the error probability performance of the MDPSK receiver is evaluated in the presence of the Doppler correction. Next, the practical considerations associated with the application of this technique on bandlimited Nyquist channels are discussed and incorporated into the final design. It is shown that the receiver can, in the absence of timing jitter, be designed to allow combined Doppler correction and data detection with no penalty due to intersymbol interference (ISI). The effects of ISI due to timing jitter are assessed by computer simulation.

The design of trellis coded MPSK for fading channels: Performance criteria

It has been well established that the appropriate criterion for optimum trellis-coded modulation design on the additive white Gaussian noise channel is maximization of the free Euclidean distance. It is shown that when the trellis-coded modulation is used on a Rician fading channel with interleaving/deinterleaving, the design of the code of optimum performance is guided by other factors, in particular, the length of the shortest error-event path, and the product of branch distances (possibly normalized by the Euclidean distance of the path) along the path. Athough maximum free distance (dfree) is still an important consideration, it plays a less significant role the more severe the fading is on the channel. These considerations lead to the definition of a new distance measure of optimization of trellis codes transmitted over Rician fading channels. If no interleaving/deinterleaving is used, then once again the design of the trellis code is guided by maximizing dfree.

The design of trellis coded MPSK for fading channels: Set partitioning for optimum code design

A previous work on criteria for designing trellis-coded MPSK modulation to achieve minimum error probability performance on the Rician fading channel is extended. It is demonstrated that allowing for multiple symbols per trellis branch, i.e., multiple trellis-coded modulation (MTCM), provides an additional degree of freedom for designing a code to meet the optimization on the fading channel. Diversities larger than those achievable with conventional trellis codes having the same number of trellis states are now attainable, it is under these conditions that MTCM achieves its full potential.

Trellis-coded MPSK modulation techniques for MSAT-X(sup)1

Various trellis-coded modulated phase shift keying (MPSK) modulation techniques for transmitting 4.8 kbps over a 5 kHz RF channel are considered. The tradeoffs between coherent versus differentially coherent types of demodulation, and interleaving are discussed as well as optimum trellis-codes designed for fading channels. Simulation results are presented.

The performance of trellis coded multilevel DPSK on a fading mobile satellite channel

The performance of trellis-coded multilevel differential phase-shift-keying (MDPSK) modulation over Rician and Rayleigh fading channels is discussed. For operation at L-band, this signalling technique leads to a more robust system than the coherent system with dual pilot tone calibration previously proposed for UHF. The results are obtained using a combination of analysis and simulation. The analysis shows that the design criterion for trellis codes to be operated on fading channels with interleaving/deinterleaving is no longer free Euclidean distance. The correct design criterion for optimizing bit error probability of trellis coded MDPSD over fading channels is presented along with examples illustrating its application.

The design of trellis codes for fading channels

The appropriate criterion for optimum trellis coded modulation design on the additive white Gaussian noise channel is maximization of the free Euclidean distance. When trellis coded modulation is used on a Rician fading channel with interleaving/deinterleaving, the design of the code for optimum performance is guided by other factors, in particular the length of the shortest error event path, and the product of branch distances (possibly normalized by the Euclidean distance of the path) along that path. Although maximum free distance (d sub free) is still an important consideration, it plays a less significant role the more severe the fading is on the channel. These considerations lead to the definition of a new distance measure for optimization of trellis codes transmitted over Rician fading channels. If no interleaving/deinterleaving is used, then once again the design of the trellis code is guided by maximizing d sub free. It is also shown that allowing for multiple symbols per trellis branch, i.e., multiple trellis coded modulation (MTCM), provides an additional degree of freedom for designing a code to meet the above optimization criteria on the fading channel. It is here where the MTCM technique exploits its full potential.

Trellis-Coded Modulation for Fading Channels

In proposed communication system, digital signals transmitted efficiently over fading channel by combination of trellis coding and multiple-phase-shift keying with addition of asymmetry to signal set. Coding and modulation schemes not designed separately as in previous systems but integrated to yield bandwidth-efficient modulation and forward-error-correction coding. Helps to satisfy need for reliable high-quality transmission of voice and data between land-mobile units via satellites, where limitations of power and bandwidth imposed simultaneously. Also applicable to ionospheric communications between fixed or mobile units.

Trellis coded modulation for 4800-9600 bits/s transmission over a fading mobile satellite channel

The combination of trellis coding and multiple phase-shift-keyed (MPSK) signaling with the addition of asymmetry to the signal set is discussed with regard to its suitability as a modulation/coding scheme for the fading mobile satellite channel. For MPSK, introducing nonuniformity (asymmetry) into the spacing between signal points in the constellation buys a further improvement in performance over that achievable with trellis coded symmetric MPSK, all this without increasing average or peak power, or changing the bandwidth constraints imposed on the system. Whereas previous contributions have considered the performance of trellis coded modulation transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the emphasis in the paper is on the performance of trellis coded MPSK in the fading environment. The results will be obtained by using a combination of analysis and simulation. It will be assumed that the effect of the fading on the phase of the received signal is fully compensated for either by tracking it with some form of phase-locked loop or with pilot tone calibration techniques. Thus, results will reflect only the degradation due to the effect of the fading on the amplitude of the received signal. Also, we shall consider only the case where interleaving/deinterleaving is employed to further combat the fading. This allows for considerable simplification of the analysis and is of great practical interest. Finally, the impact of the availability of channel state information on average bit error probability performance is assessed.

Trellis coding with asymmetric modulations

Through the asymmetric design of signal constellations, it often becomes possible to obtain a performance gain over conventional symmetric constellations combined with trellis coding. Attention is given to the joint design of n/(n+1) trellis codes and asymmetric 2 exp (n+1)-point signal constellations having no bandwidth expansion relative to an uncoded 2 exp n-point symmetric signal set. The asymptotic performance gains due to coding and asymmetry are explained in terms of the minimum free Euclidean distance of the trellis; examples are given which show the performance gain due to the asymmetry of the signal set. Since asymmetry does not affect bandwidth or power requirements, these improvements come at little or no cost.

Multiple trellis coded modulation (MTCM) performance on a fading mobile satellite channel

The author recently introduced the notion of multiple trellis coding, in which more than one channel symbol per trellis branch is transmitted. He showed that on the ideal additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the combination of multiple trellis coding with M-ary modulation yields a performance gain with symmetric signal sets comparable to and in some cases better than that previously achieved only with signal constellation asymmetry. The combination of conventional trellis coding with multiple phase-shift-keyed (MPSK) signaling has recently been shown by the author to be a well-suited modulation/coding scheme for transmission over the fading mobile satellite channel. In particular, a rate 2/3 coded 8-PSK scheme operating at 4800 b/s is currently under development for use in NASA's Mobile Satellite Experiment (MSAT-X). The author applies the multiple trellis-coded modulation technique in the same fading mobile satellite environment, extending the analysis results previously found for its performance over the AWGN channel to the MSAT-X channel.
