Lattice engineering of high-entropy olivine-type lithium metal phosphate as high-voltage cathodes

Engineering of high-entropy cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries has been actively pursued owing to the outstanding conductivity of high-entropy materials benefited from the maximum entropy and unique antisite disordering structure. Olivine lithium metal phosphates such as LiMnPO 4 and LiNiPO 4 feature high working voltages but low capacities due to their insulation nature. Here in this work, the synthesis of the high-entropy lithium metal phosphate materials (HELMPs) is realized by combining mechanochemistry with a calcination method. By regulating lattice of HELMPs, the high-entropy Li(Mn 0.35 Fe 0.35 Co0.1Mg 0.1 Ca 0.1 )PO 4 reveals three typical high-voltage plateaus in charge–discharge curves corresponding to the redox of Fe, Mn, and Co in the voltage range of 2.0–4.9 V vs Li + /Li, and a much higher initial capacity than LiMnPO 4 (104 vs 15 mAh g -1 ).

Expeditious Coordination-Driven Construction of Hierarchically Nanoporous Barium Salts

Organic moieties-derived salts with permanent porosity and polarized channels have shown unique features and attractive performance in the field of adsorption, separation, and conduction. However, state-of-the-art organic salts generally rely on ionic interaction and hydrogen bonding formation to maintain the porous channels. The synthesis of organic moiety-derived salts with permanent accessible pores even after removal of the trapped guest molecules, and without the constraint of hydrogen bonding formation still remains a great challenge. Herein, we present an expeditious construction pathway to generate hierarchically nanoporous barium salts without hydrogen bonding formation. The strong ionic interaction of the barium cation and sulfonate anions led to rapid reaction equilibrium (~2 min), affording diverse barium-derived ionic polymer (Ba-IP) with permanent porosity and highly polarized channels. The produced Ba-IP materials with abundant cations and anions displayed high CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 separation performance, with the selectivities reaching up to 89.5 and 280, respectively, at 273 K, surpassing most of the organic polymers functionalized by ionic moieties.

Effects of Methylating Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids on Viscosity: New Insights from the Compensated Arrhenius Formalism

Methylation of the C(2) carbon on imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) causes an unexpected increase in viscosity when paired with the anion bis(trifluoromethylsulfonamide) [Tf 2 N] – , but the viscosity decreases when the methylated imidazolium is paired with a tetracyanoborate [B(CN) 4 ] – anion. Herein, this paper investigates these different observations in viscosity using the compensated Arrheniusformalism (CAF) for fluidity (inverse viscosity), which assumes fluidity to be a thermally activated process. CAF activation energies are determined for imidazolium [Tf 2 N] – and methylated imidazolium [Tf 2 N] – and compared to imidazolium [B(CN) 4 ] – and methylated imidazolium [B(CN) 4 ] – . The results show that the activation energy increases with methylation for [Tf 2 N] – , but it decreases with methylation for [B(CN) 4 ] – . The CAF results also yield information concerning the entropy of activation, which are compared for the two systems

CO 2 Chemisorption Behavior in Conjugated Carbanion-Derived Ionic Liquids via Carboxylic Acid Formation

Superbase-derived task-specific ionic liquids (STSILs) represent one of the most attractive and extensively studied systems in carbon capture via chemisorption, in which the obtained CO 2 uptake capacity has a strong relationship with the basicity of the anions. High energy input in desorption and side reactions caused by the strong basicity of the anions are still unsolved issues. The development of other customized STSILs leveraging an alternative driving force to achieve efficient CO 2 chemisorption/desorption is highly desirable yet challenging. Here, in this work, carbanion-derived STSILs were developed for efficient CO 2 chemisorption via a carboxylic acid formation pathway. The STSIL with the deprotonated malononitrile molecule ([MN]) as the anion exhibited much higher CO 2 uptake capacity than the one derived from 2-methylmalononitrile ([MMN]). Notably, this trend was opposite to their basicity ([MN] < [MMN]). Detailed characterization of the products, supported by density functional theory simulations of spectra and calculations of the reaction energetics, demonstrated that carboxylic acid was formed upon reacting with CO 2 via proton transfer in [MN]-derived STSILs but not in the case of [MMN] due to lack of an α-H. The preference of the carboxylic acid product over carboxylate formation was driven by the extended conjugation among the central sp 2 carbon, the as-formed carboxylic acid, and the two nitrile groups. The achievements made in this work provide an alternative design principle of STSILs by leveraging the extended conjugation in the CO 2 -integrated product.

Insight into the Fast-Rechargeability of a Novel Mo 1.5 W 1.5 Nb 14 O 44 Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Wadsley–Roth phased niobates are promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, while their inherently low electrical conductivity still limits their rate-capability. Herein, a novel doped Mo 1.5 W 1.5 Nb 14 O 44 (MWNO) material is facilely prepared via an ionothermal-synthesis-assisted doping strategy. The detailed crystal structure of MWNO is characterized by neutron powder diffraction and aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, unveiling the full occupation of Mo 6+ -dopant at the t1 tetrahedral site. In half-cells, MWNO exhibits enhanced fast-rechargeability. In this work, the origin of the improved performance is investigated by ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) computation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, revealing that bandgap narrowing improves the electrical conductivity of MWNO. Furthermore, operando X-ray diffraction elucidates that MWNO exhibits a typical solid-solution phase conversion-based lithium-ion insertion/extraction mechanism with reversible structural evolution during the electrochemical reaction. The boosted lithium-ion diffusivity of MWNO, due to the Mo 6+ /W 6+ doping effect, is confirmed by a galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and DFT. With the simultaneously enhanced electrical conductivity and lithium-ion diffusivity, MWNO successfully demonstrates its fast-rechargeability and practicality in the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 -coupled full-cells. Therefore, this work illustrates the potential of ionothermal synthesis in energy storage materials and provides a mechanistic understanding of the doping effect on improving material's electrochemical performance.

Mechanochemistry-driven phase transformation of crystalline covalent triazine frameworks assisted by alkaline molten salts

We report covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have shown wide applications in the fields of separation, catalysis, energy storage, and beyond. However, it is a long-term challenging subject to fabricate high-quality CTF materials via facile procedures. Herein, a mechanochemistry-driven procedure was developed to achieve phase transformation of crystalline CTFs assisted by alkaline molten salts. The transformation of CTF-1 from staggered AB to eclipsed AA stacking mode was achieved by short time (30 min) mechanochemical treatment in the presence of molten salts composed of LiOH/KOH, generating high-quality CTF-1 material with high crystallinity, high surface area (625 m 2 g -1 ), and permanent/ordered porosity without carbonization under ambient conditions. This facile procedure could be extended to provide nanoporous three-dimensional CTF materials.

Mechanochemically Assisted Synthesis of High-Entropy Layer-Structured Dittmarite Analogues

High-entropy solid-solution materials, especially layered ones incorporating five or more near-equimolar components into single-phase crystal structures, may spark functional synergism toward the electrochemistry area because of their unique antisite disordering structures and the synergistic effect of multiple active sites. Herein, high-entropy dittmarite analogues (HEDAs) were synthesized via a mechanochemistry-assisted hydrothermal method. Furthermore, the as-prepared HEDAs have single dittmarite phases with five homogeneously distributed metal elements, exhibiting enhanced activities in oxygen evolution catalysis compared to the single metal counterparts.

Highly Perfluorinated Covalent Triazine Frameworks Derived from a Low-Temperature Ionothermal Approach Towards Enhanced CO 2 Electroreduction

Perfluorinated covalent triazine frameworks (F-CTFs) have shown unique features and attractive performance in separation and catalysis. However, state-of-art F-CTFs synthesized via the ZnCl 2 -promoted procedure have quite low fluorine contents due to C-F bond cleavage induced by chloride (a Lewis base) and the harsh conditions deployed (400-700 °C). Fabricating F-CTFs with high fluorine contents (> 30 wt%) remains challenging. Herein, we present a low-temperature ionothermal approach (275 °C) to prepare F-CTFs, which is achieved via polymerization of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFPN) over the Lewis superacids, e.g., zinc triflimide [Zn(NTf 2 ) 2 ] without side reactions. With low catalyst loading (equimolar), F-CTFs are afforded with high fluorine content (31 wt%), surface area up to 367 m 2 g -1 , and micropores around 1.1 nm. The highly hydrophobic F-CTF-1 exhibits good capability to boost electroreduction of CO 2 to CO, with faradaic efficiency of 95.7% at –0.8 V and high current density (–141 mA cm -2 ) surpassing most of the metal-free electrocatalysts.

A bifunctional zeolitic porous liquid with incompatible Lewis pairs for antagonistic cascade catalysis

The emergence of porous liquids (PLs) opened opportunities to form unique antagonistic systems capable of fulfilling cascade reactions promoted by incompatible active sites in one pot, which is a long-term challenging subject in catalysis. Herein, unique bifunctional type III PL-based systems were facilely fabricated via assembly of zeolite nanosheets with ionic liquids. Rational structural design afforded PLs that feature high zeolite concentration, stable dispersion after 2 years, abundant cavity distribution, and involvement of antagonistic groups (acid and base sites) in separated and active form via steric hindrance control and electronic repulsion regulation. These unique properties worked cooperatively to fulfill the cascade deacetalization-Knoevenagel/Aldol condensation in one pot with superior catalytic efficiency outperforming the traditional systems. The key to success lies in the formation of bifunctional composites, transformation of zeolite from heterogeneous to homogeneous via surface modification, as well as rapid mass transfer ensured by the rigid porous architecture.

Ultrasound-driven fabrication of high-entropy alloy nanocatalysts promoted by alcoholic ionic liquids

High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA-NPs) are highly underutilized in heterogeneous catalysis due to the absence of a reliable, sustainable, and facile synthetic method. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of HEA nanocatalysts realized via an ultrasound-driven wet chemistry method promoted by alcoholic ionic liquids (AILs). Owing to the intrinsic reducing ability of the hydroxyl group, AILs were synthesized and utilized as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional reducing agents and volatile organic solvents in the synthetic process. Under high-intensity ultrasound irradiation, Au 3+ , Pd 2+ , Pt 2+ , Rh 3+ , and Ru 3+ ions were co-reduced and transformed into single-phase HEA (AuPdPtRhRu) nanocrystals without calcination. Characterization results reveal that the as-synthesized nanocrystals are composed of elements of Au, Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru as expected. Compared to the monometallic counterparts such as Pd-NPs, the carbon-supported HEA nanocatalysts show superior catalytic performance for selective hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone in terms of yield and selectivity. Our synthetic strategy provides an improved and facile methodology for the sustainable synthesis of multicomponent alloys for catalysis and other applications.

CO 2 Chemisorption Behavior of Coordination-Derived Phenolate Sorbents

CO 2 chemisorption via C-O bond formation is an efficient methodology in carbon capture especially using phenolate-based ionic liquids (ILs) as the sorbents to afford carbonate products. However, most of the current IL systems involve alkylphosphonium cations, leading to side reactions via the ylide intermediate pathway. It is important to figure out the CO 2 chemisorption behavior of phenolate-derived sorbents using inactive and easily accessible cation counterparts without active protons. Herein, phenolate-based systems were constructed via coordination between alkali metal cations with crown ethers to avoid the participation of active protons in CO 2 chemisorption. Reaction pathway study revealed that CO 2 uptake could be achieved by O-C bond formation to afford carbonate. CO 2 uptake capacity and reaction enthalpy were significantly influenced by the coordination effect, alkali metal types, and alkyl groups on the benzene ring.

Mechanistic Insights of Pore Contributions in Carbon Supercapacitors by Modified Step Potential Electrochemical Spectroscopy

Porous carbons are widely used as electrode materials for electrical double layer (EDL)-type supercapacitors. Differentiation of capacitance contributions from micropores and mesopores is important to understand porous carbon capacitive behavior. However, this remains challenging to accomplish. Here, we present an improved step potential electrochemical spectroscopy method to investigate the contributions to capacitance from hierarchical pores and redox processes.

Synthesis and Characterization of Macrocyclic Ionic Liquids for CO 2 Separation

In this work, a series of ionic liquids with symmetric, macrocyclic cations composed of N-heterocycles connected by alkyl or ether linkages coupled with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide or bis(pentafluoroethanesulfonyl)amide anions were synthesized to explore their application in CO 2 separation. These novel ionic liquids showed selective physical absorption of CO 2 compared to N 2 making them potential candidates for carbon capture. We examined the effect of cation structure on the physicochemical and separations properties of the ionic liquid and showed that these ionic liquids exhibit an inverse relationship between molar volume and CO 2 sorption capacity following the trend predicted by models based on regular solution theory. The fractional free volumes of the ionic liquids were lower than typical alkyl-imidazolium ionic liquids despite the cyclic structure of the cations which could be related to the flexibility of the alkyl and ether linkages. These results provide added insight into our understanding of structure–property relationships in CO 2 solubility in ionic liquids and afford a path toward enhancing the separations properties based on structure.

Molecular dynamics simulations of a dicationic ionic liquid for CO 2 capture

A dicationic ionic liquid ([DBU-PEG][Tf 2 N] 2 ) was studied using classical molecular dynamics simulations to examine its structural and gas separation properties. The dication was designed in an attempt to improve CO 2 solubility by means of tuning the cation-anion interactions of the ionic liquid (IL). The computational model was compared to experimentally obtained density, viscosity, and powder X-ray diffraction spectra. The structure of the IL was further investigated with radial distribution functions and free volume analysis through cavity distributions. It was found that the shape and charge distribution of the dication enhances CO 2 interaction: the CO 2 molecule is hugged by the dication along the PEG linker and close to one of the cationic ends. Here, the geminal design of the dication allows for strong interaction with CO 2 , showing promise as a means of carbon capture.

Entropy-stabilized single-atom Pd catalysts via high-entropy fluorite oxide supports

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention in the catalysis community. However, fabricating intrinsically stable SACs on traditional supports (N-doped carbon, metal oxides, etc.) remains a formidable challenge, especially under high-temperature conditions. Here, we report a novel entropy-driven strategy to stabilize Pd single-atom on the high-entropy fluorite oxides (CeZrHfTiLa)O x (HEFO) as the support by a combination of mechanical milling with calcination at 900 °C. Characterization results reveal that single Pd atoms are incorporated into HEFO (Pd1@HEFO) sublattice by forming stable Pd–O–M bonds (M = Ce/Zr/La). Compared to the traditional support stabilized catalysts such as Pd@CeO 2 , Pd 1 @HEFO affords the improved reducibility of lattice oxygen and the existence of stable Pd–O–M species, thus exhibiting not only higher low-temperature CO oxidation activity but also outstanding resistance to thermal and hydrothermal degradation. This work therefore exemplifies the superiority of high-entropy materials for the preparation of SACs.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of piperidinium ionic liquids: a comparison to the charge delocalised pyridinium analogues

In this study, nine piperidinium-based ionic liquids are analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of alkyl substituent length and the nature of the anion on the electronic environment of the cation are investigated. The electronic environment of the hetero carbon and the cationic nitrogen is compared between two structurally similar cations, 1-octyl-1-methylpiperidinium ([C 8 C 1 Pip] + ) versus 1-octylpyridinium ([C 8 Py] + ). Due to the charge delocalisation, the hetero carbon component within [C 8 Py] + is more positively charged, which exhibits much higher binding energy; whilst the cationic nitrogen component is in the similar electronic environment. The impact of the charge delocalisation on the electronic environment of the anion is also compared between [C 8 C 1 Pip] + and [C 8 Py] + . Here, it is found that for the more basic anion, the cation can significantly affect the electronic environment of the anion; for the less basic anion, such an effect concentrates on the component bearing more negative point charges.
