Cyber-Attack Detection and Accommodation for the Energy Delivery System

The goals of this project were to create a software system with a suite of key algorithms for cyber-attack detection and accommodation providing domain layer protection for critical power generation assets. Example assets included gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, and electrical generators. The aggressive algorithm goals were aimed at reducing the false positive rates in threat detection to <1% using learnings from many evolving disciplines (power turbine and generator physics, power system modeling, modern control theory, system identification, machine learning, deep learning, mathematics and data science). Additional goals for the algorithms involved localizing threats on-the-fly to know in which monitoring node the effects of attacks are present, and then providing accommodation to keep the system running uninterrupted much of the time in the presence of the attack. Accommodation had a performance goal of providing resiliency when up to 50% of monitoring nodes are in an attack state.

Transient Efficiency Flexibility and Reliability Optimization of Coal-Fired Power Plants (Model-Based Estimation Library Report)

This document pertains to the reporting requirements of DOE contract FE-0031767. The document covers the development of a model-based estimation (MBE) library for generating digital twins of coal-fired power plants (CFPPs). The models used by the MBE are transient and physics-based. Model classes in the library that correspond to different components in CFPPs are presented with physical explanations and representative results. MBE library provides Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), and Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithms. The MBE library is generic and can be used to represent a variety of CFPPs. A digital twin of a CFPP will be created as the reduced-order model of that CFPP is embedded in the developed MBE architecture.

Transient Efficiency Flexibility and Reliability Optimization of Coal-Fired Power Plants (Reduced Order Model Development Report)

This document pertains to the reporting requirements of DOE contract FE-0031767. The document covers the development of a reduced order model library that can be used to represent coal-fired power plants. The models are transient and physics-based. Model classes in the library that correspond to different components in CFPPs are presented with physical explanations and representative results. Also, the use of the library to build an overall model for a representative CFPP is presented along with simulation results.
