Global gyrokinetic simulations of the impact of magnetic island on ion temperature gradient driven turbulence

The effect of island width on the multi-scale interactions between magnetic island (MI) and ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence has been investigated based on the global gyrokinetic approach. It is found that the coupling between the island and turbulence is enhanced when the MI width (w) becomes larger. A vortex flow that is highly sensitive to the width of the MI can be triggered, ultimately resulting in a potent E × B shear flow and a consequent reduction in turbulent transport. The shearing rate induced by the vortex flow is minimum at the O-point while it is maximum at both of the two reconnection points of the island, i.e. the X-points, regardless of the island width. There exists a nonmonotonic relationship between zonal flow (ZF) amplitude and island width, showing that the ZF is partially suppressed by medium-sized MIs whereas enhanced in the case of large island. A larger MI can tremendously damage the ITG mode structure, resulting in higher turbulent transport at the X-point whereas a lower one at the O-point, respectively. Such phenomenon will be less distinct at very small island widths below w/a ~ 8% ≈ 12ρ i (a is the minor radius and ρ i the ion gyroradius), where it shows that turbulence near the X-point is hardly affected although it is still suppressed inside the island. Furthermore, the influence of different island sizes on turbulence transport level is also discussed.

Ion mixing in the plasma sheet boundary layer by drift instabilities

The linear stability properties of collisionless drift instabilities are analyzed in a Harris equilibrium model of the plasma sheet boundary layer (PSBL). The strearmng ions with drift-type instabilities driven in the PSBL are considered. The fluid approximation leads to growth but predicts that the mode width approaches the gyroradius of the energetic ions. Thus an integral equation theory for the modes is developed taking into account that in the PSBL the curvature drift is weak compared with the grad-B drift. The exact wave particle resonance is kept in the nonlocal response functions. Plasma density, temperature, and magnetic gradient drift motions are taken into account. The drift modes produce an anomalous cross-field momentum transport mixing the PSBL ions on the time scale of tens of seconds. A nonlinear simulation is performed which shows the coalescence of the small scale, fast growing modes into large-scale vortices. The relation between these collective modes and plasma sheet transport phenomena is discussed including the comparison with the competing plasma mixing from single-particle stochasticity.

Excitations of low-frequency hydromagnetic waves by freshly created ions in the solar wind

Low-frequency hydromagnetic waves excited by newborn ions in the solar wind plasma are studied. The freshly created ions appear in the solar wind frame with a ring beam distribution. Both Alfven and fast magnetosonic waves are made unstable by the presence of the newborn ions. The dependence of the growth rate of both waves on the newborn ion density, the angle between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and solar wind flow, and the angle of wave propagation relative to the IMF is investigated. Analytic approximations for the growth rates are presented, and numerical solutions of the dispersion equation are shown. The approximations are quite close to the numerically determined growth rates. It is found that the waves grow preferentially in the direction parallel to the IMF, and that the growth rates increase with both newborn ion density and the angle between the IMF and the solar wind flow.

A cyclotron-maser instability associated with a nongyrotropic distribution

A stability analysis for the cyclotron-maser instability in the presence of a nongyrotropic electron distribution is presented. The model configuration describes a uniformly magnetized cold ambient plasma that contains a relatively diffuse suprathermal electron component coherently bunched in gyrophase. The stability of perturbations propagating parallel to the ambient magnetic field is considered, and substantial growth rates are found to occur. The results are contrasted with those found for a comparable gyrotropic loss-cone distribution, and it is found that the nongyrotropic instability is characterized by substantially higher growth rates.
