Promoting Fast Ion Conduction in Li-Argyrodite through Lithium Sublattice Engineering

Fundamental understanding of ionic transport plays a pivotal role in designing and optimizing fast ionic conductors. Here, through a systematic neutron scattering and theoretical investigation, we discovered new insights about how anion sublattice affects Li + distribution and transport in Li-argyrodite. We found that the promotion of Li + conductivities is strongly correlated with a previously overlooked Li + interstitial site (16e), which is critical for realizing intercage Li + migration. More isotropic Li + migration pathways with higher Li + occupancies on the interstitial 16e site are found to be the underlying reason for the much higher Li + conductivity in Li 6 PS 5 Cl relative to the Br- and I-based analogues. We further confirm that they are also the universal driving force for the ultrahigh Li + conductivities in both anion-substituted Li-poor (Li 6–a PS 5–a X a, X = Cl and Br) and cation-substituted Li-rich argyrodite (e.g., Li 6+a GeaP 1–a S 5 I and Li 6+a SiaSb 1–a S 5 I). In conclusion, it is expected this strategy can be generally adopted to improve the ionic conductivity of the broad family of Li-rich argyrodite and beyond.

Robust optimization for intensity-modulated proton therapy with soft spot sensitivity regularization

In this work, we developed a novel computationally efficient robust optimization method for IMPT. The robustness is calculated as the spot sensitivity to both range and shift perturbations. The dose fidelity term is then regularized by the sensitivity term for the flexibility and trade-off between the dosimetry and the robustness. In the stress test, SenR is more resilient to unexpected uncertainties. These advantages in combination with its fast computation time make it a viable candidate for clinical IMPT planning.

Simple spatial scaling rules behind complex cities

Although most of wealth and innovation have been the result of human interaction and cooperation, we are not yet able to quantitatively predict the spatial distributions of three main elements of cities: population, roads, and socioeconomic interactions. By a simple model mainly based on spatial attraction and matching growth mechanisms, we reveal that the spatial scaling rules of these three elements are in a consistent framework, which allows us to use any single observation to infer the others. All numerical and theoretical results are consistent with empirical data from ten representative cities. In addition, our model can also provide a general explanation of the origins of the universal super- and sub-linear aggregate scaling laws and accurately predict kilometre-level socioeconomic activity. Our work opens a new avenue for uncovering the evolution of cities in terms of the interplay among urban elements, and it has a broad range of applications.

Consensus Guidelines for Implementing Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Therapy for Thoracic Malignancies on Behalf of the PTCOG Thoracic and Lymphoma Subcommittee

Pencil-beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy (PT), particularly intensity modulated PT, represents the latest advanced PT technology for treating cancers, including thoracic malignancies. On the basis of virtual clinical studies, PBS-PT appears to have great potential in its ability to tightly tailor the dose to the target while sparing critical structures, thereby reducing treatment-related toxicities, particularly for tumors in areas with complicated anatomy. However, implementing PBS-PT for moving targets has several additional technical challenges compared with intensity modulated photon radiation therapy or passive scattering PT. Four-dimensional computed tomography–based motion management and robust optimization and evaluation are crucial for minimizing uncertainties associated with beam range and organ motion. Rigorous quality assurance is required to validate dose delivery both before and during the course of treatment. Active motion management (eg, breath hold), beam gating, rescanning, tracking, or adaptive planning may be needed for cases involving significant motion or changes in motion or anatomy over the course of treatment.

Preliminary Radiation Testing of a State-of-the-Art Commercial 14nm CMOS Processor/System-on-a-Chip

Hardness assurance test results of Intel state-of-the-art 14nm “Broadwell” U-series processor / System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for total ionizing dose (TID) are presented, along with exploratory results from trials at a medical proton facility. Test method builds upon previous efforts [1] by utilizing commercial laptop motherboards and software stress applications as opposed to more traditional automated test equipment (ATE).

Microstructural Evolution of Ti-6Al-4V during High Strain Rate Conditions of Metal Cutting

The microstructural evolution following metal cutting was investigated within the metal chips of Ti-6Al-4V. Metal cutting was used to impose a high strain rate on the order of approx.10(exp 5)/s within the primary shear zone as the metal was removed from the workpiece. The initial microstructure of the parent material (PM) was composed of a bi-modal microstructure with coarse prior grains and equiaxed primary located at the boundaries. After metal cutting, the microstructure of the metal chips showed coarsening of the equiaxed primary grains and lamellar. These metallographic findings suggest that the metal chips experienced high temperatures which remained below the transus temperature.
