X-Ray Emission from the Sun in Its Youth and Old Age

We have obtained ROSAT PSPC (Roentgen Satellite Position Sensitive Proportional Counter) pointed observations of two nearby G stars of ages 70 Myr and 9.5 Gyr that are of unique importance as proxies for the Sun at the two extremes of its main-sequence evolutionary lifetime. The younger star, HD 129333 (EK Dra; G0 V), a rapid rotator with a 2.7 day period, is a strong source with an X-ray luminosity L(x)(0.2-2.4 keV) = (7.5-11.5) x 10(exp 29) erg/s. Modeling suggests a two-temperature corona with T(1) = (2.0 +/- 0.3) x 10(exp 6) K and T(2) = (9.7 +/- 0.3) x 10(exp 6) K (formal uncertainties). A continuous emission measure distribution, increasing to higher temperatures and with a cutoff at (20-30) x 10(exp 6) K, yields even better fits to the data. The old star, beta Hyi (HR 98; G2 IV), represents the Sun in the future, near the end of its hydrogen-core burning stage, when it should be rotating more slowly (present P(rot) = 25.4 day) and should have lower levels of activity. The ROSAT measurements yield L(x) = (0.9-3.0) x 10(exp 27) ergs/s and a rather cool, single coronal temperature of T = (1.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(exp 6) K. For comparison, the Sun has L(x) approx. equal to 2 x 10(exp 27) ergs/s and a coronal temperature of about T = 2 x 10(exp 6) K. These stars provide information on the decline of the stellar (and specifically solar) magnetic activity from extreme youth to old age. HD 129333 is also important in that it yields an estimate of the solar soft X-ray flux in the early solar system at the epoch of the terminal stages of planetary accretion.

Gas dynamics, accretion, and evolution of Algols: Initial results for three representative systems

IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) observations were made around the orbits of three Algol-type binaries: R Arae, U Cephei and Algol. These stars were selected to represent, respectively, the rapid, moderate and slow phases of mass transfer and mass loss in Algols. The data was obtained to derive maps of gas flow and mass loss, to study accretion processes and kinetic heating, and to investigate the importance of magnetic fields in these systems. Continuous observations were made from GSFC and VILSPA over 4 1/3 consecutive days during 10 to 14 Sep. 1989. A total of 100 spectra are obtained. This is the first time that Algol systems are observed continuously over their orbits with IUE. Initial results from this program are discussed.

The evolution of magnetic activity on V711 Tauri and evidence for a significant facular contribution

The nature of the long-term evolution of magnetic activity in the RS CVn binary V711 Tauri is investigated using the complete set of available archival IUE SWP low-dispersion spectra of V711 Tau for the period covering August 1978 - December 1984. An analysis of the spectra confirmed the pattern of a long-term smooth variation of chromospheric and transition region emission found previosly by Dorren et al. (1986). An explanation of the relationship between the different facets of the magnetic activity on V711 Tau is presented.

The long-term evolution of chromospheric, transition-region, and starspot activity in the RS CVn system V711 Tauri

Using IUE spectra of the RS CVn binary V711 Tau from 1978 to 1984, the emission fluxes of the prominent chromospheric and transition-region lines are examined to trace the long-term development of active regions on the active component of the system. Optical observations reveal a systematic increase in the star's mean brightness, accompanied by an overall decrease in the chromospheric H-alpha emission, while the star becomes bluer. These changes could be related to a general decrease in the photospheric (spot) and chromospheric activity from 1978 to 1984. The UV emission-line fluxes from SWP low dispersion IUE spectra near the light curve extrema show a rise in emission from 1978 to a maximum in 1982 to 1983, followed by a sharper decline to reach the 1978 level by late 1984. Although the behavior of each of these aspects of the star appears to show systematic changes, the relationships among them are complicated.

An ultraviolet investigation of the unusual eclipsing binary system FF AQR

A series of seven low dispersion IUE exposures in ultraviolet and wavelength regions obtained on December 6, 1981 during the eclipse of the subdwarf, during egress, and out of eclipse is analyzed. These observations and the binary phase at which they were made are shown on a schematic representation of the V-band light curve obtained in 1975. The depth in V is 0.15 mag. The circles are IUE V magnitudes from FES measures obtained during the observing run. They indicate an eclipse depth some 0.05 mag lower than expected, possibly due to difficulties with the color term in the FES calibration. The eclipse depths of Dworetsky in U, B and V were assumed in the calculations.

Visible-band and IUE observations of mu Sagittarii

H alpha and U band photometry and IUE spectra of the binary system mu Sagittarii are discussed. An estimate of mass-loss is made from the observed P Cygni profiles. There are indications of pulsation in the supergiant B8 component.
