Multipurpose Photonic Transducers

Features include smallness and noise immunity. Photonic transducer is interferometer with two arms. Small relative axial motions of mirrors detected as shifts in interference pattern. Version measures temperature changes via differential expansion or contraction of stalks. New transducers smaller (typical size less than 1 cm) and coupled to monitoring equipment with optical fibers instead of wires. Well suited to biomedical instrumentation.

Optical Logic Gates

Logic gates for light signals constructed from combinations of prisms, polarizing plates, and quarterwave plates. Optical logic gate performs elementary logic operation on light signals received along two optical fibers. Whether gate performs OR function or exclusive-OR function depends on orientation of analyzer. Nonbinary truth tables also obtained by rotating polarizer or analyzer to other positions or inserting other quarter-wave plates.

Binder for Carbon-Fiber Coating

Insoluble, even coating formed by soaking in polyacrylic acid. Carbon fiber material prepared by soaking in solution of 20 percent polyacrylic acid in water. Material blotted and dried at 120 degrees C for at least 2 hours. Dried material reacted with boiling aqueous solution of calcium acetate. Treated material removed from boiling solution, blotted, dried at 120 degrees C, washed with distilled water, and dried again.

Solar-Assisted Solution-Mining Concept

Brine heated in solar pond dissolves minerals from deposits. In proposed solution-mining process, hot brine is pumped down one well and recovered at one or more other wells. Emerging brine is rich in desired mineral. Brine is evaporated in solar ponds to recover mineral.

Autonomous oxygen production for a Mars return vehicle

The way in which a chemical processor that uses the Martian atmosphere as its only feedstock, thereby reducing the mass that must be launched from earth, can help to return a surface sample from Mars from a single Space Shuttle launch is described. Richter's (1981) study on both the theoretical and experimental aspects of oxygen separation using yttria-stabilized zirconia membranes is cited. Here, separation is accomplished by applying a voltage across the membrane which results in the selective conduction of oxygen ions from one side to the other. It is noted that by using thermal dissociation of the carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere to produce oxygen (and carbon monoxide), these zirconia electrolytic cells can be employed to separate oxygen from the atmospheric stream. Descriptions are also given of atmospheric filtration, atmospheric compression, and waste heat recovery, and of the oxygen precooler and oxygen compressor.

Detonation propulsion experiments and theory

Test data are presented for the use of a single detonation of explosives in long-cone, short-cone, straight, and firing-plug nozzles to provide propulsion in a simulated Jupiter atmosphere, as well as the ambient gases N, CO2 and He. The long-cone nozzle yielded a progressive increase with ambient pressure for the higher molecular weight gases CO2 and N, while the lower molecular weight He and simulated Jupiter atmosphere showed a specific pulse decrease with increasing ambient pressure. The short-plug nozzle yielded a small specific impulse reduction with increasing ambient pressure, and its results were found to be nearly independent of ambient gas molecular weight. All data gathered are analyzed by using first principles, approximate blast wave theory predictions, and two-dimensional numerical calculations. Rarefaction and oscillatory wave phenomena are found to significantly influence specific impulse.

Improved coal-slurry pipeline

High strength steel pipeline carries hot mixture of powdered coal and coal derived oil to electric-power-generating station. Slurry is processed along way to remove sulfur, ash, and nitrogen and to recycle part of oil. System eliminates hazards and limitations associated with anticipated coal/water-slurry pipelines.

Burn-test apparatus for fiber composites

Burn-test apparatus made from conductive metal grid and indicator lamp monitors release of conductive carbon fibers from specimen of carbon-reinforced composites exposed to flame. Procedure is more sensitive than photographing or physically trapping and counting fibers.

Seismic vibration source

A system for vibrating the earth in a location where seismic mapping is to take place is described. A relatively shallow hole formed in the earth, such as a hole 10 feet deep, placing a solid propellant in the hole, sealing a portion of the hole above the solid propellant with a device that can rapidly open and close to allow a repeatedly interrupted escape of gas. The propellant is ignited so that high pressure gas is created which escapes in pulses to vibrate the earth.

Dynamic measurement of bulk modulus

Technique based on measuring phase difference between microwave reference and test signals and has been used to determine change in bulk modulus of solid-fuel rocket propellants should be useful in studying other dielectric materials.

Feasibility of rocket propellant production on Mars

In situ production of rocket propellant to reduce landed mass requirements for Mars return missions has been investigated. The analysis has shown that a system which utilizes atmospheric carbon dioxide and soil moisture to produce liquid methane-oxygen propellant requires a landed mass which is less than half the mass of the ascent vehicle it produces.

Carbon wastewater treatment process

A new powdered-carbon treatment process is being developed for the elimination of the present problems, associated with the disposal of biologically active sewage waste solids, and with water reuse. This counter-current flow process produces an activated carbon, which is obtained from the pyrolysis of the sewage solids, and utilizes this material to remove the adulterating materials from the water. Additional advantages of the process are the elimination of odors, the removal of heavy metals, and the potential for energy conservation.

Humphrey, M. F.

Development of propulsion for high atmospheric pressure or dense environments

The development of a propulsion system that employs a detonating propellant is described, and the need for such a system and its use in certain planetary atmospheres are demonstrated. A theoretical formulation of the relevant gas-dynamic processes was developed, and a related series of experimental tests were pursued.

Solid propellant rocket motor

The characteristics of a solid propellant rocket engine with a controlled rate of thrust buildup to a desired thrust level are discussed. The engine uses a regressive burning controlled flow solid propellant igniter and a progressive burning main solid propellant charge. The igniter is capable of operating in a vacuum and sustains the burning of the propellant below its normal combustion limit until the burning propellant surface and combustion chamber pressure have increased sufficiently to provide a stable chamber pressure.
