Cryogenic performance of the SIRTF prototype secondary mirror assembly

Results are presented of the first liquid helium temperature testing of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) prototype Secondary Mirror Assembly (PSMA). Attention is given to the key requirements of PSMA, its design, and the test instrumentation and procedures. Results of preliminary tests completed to date showed that the design of the PSMA forms a very strong basis for meeting the SIRTF requirements.

Multivariable feedback design - Concepts for a classical/modern synthesis

This paper presents a practical design perspective on multivariable feedback control problems. It reviews the basic issue - feedback design in the face of uncertainties - and generalizes known single-input, single-output (SISO) statements and constraints of the design problem to multiinput, multioutput (MIMO) cases. Two major MIMO design approaches are then evaluated in the context of these results.

Robustness with observers

The paper describes an adjustment procedure for observer-based linear control systems which asymptotically achieves the same loop transfer functions (and hence the same relative stability, robustness, and disturbance rejection properties) as full-state feedback control implementations. Full-state loop-transfer properties can be recovered asymptotically if the plant is minimum phase; this occurs at the expense of noise performance.

Robustness of multiloop linear feedback systems

This paper presents a new approach to the frequency-domain analysis of multiloop linear feedback systems. The properties of the return difference equation are examined using the concepts of singular values, singular vectors and the spectral norm of a matrix. A number of new tools for multiloop systems are developed which are analogous to those for scalar Nyquist and Bode analysis. These provide a generalization of the scalar frequency-domain notions such as gain, bandwidth, stability margins and M-circles, and provide considerable insight into system robustness.
